John Beck believes he deserves another chance

Beck

By Josh Katzowitz

You’ve got to love John Beck. Not for the way he plays the game (he did lose the starting quarterback race to Rex Grossman at the start of last year before losing it again in the middle of 2011) or his winning percentage (he’s 0-7 in his career as a starter).

No, you’ve got to love Beck’s confidence because even though he’s been passed over plenty of times before for Grossman and even though the Redskins almost surely will find a new quarterback in the offseason, he still believes he should be Washington’s starter.

"I feel without a doubt I can be a better quarterback. I told our coaches this at the end of the season. I went into coach (Mike) Shanahan's office and said, 'I want to play right now,’” said Beck during an interview with 97.5 The Zone (via Hogs Haven). “This is very frustrating for me to have had my opportunity, to made the most of it when he put me in, I made the most of it, but the games following it didn't go the way we wanted. It's tough for me to say now I'm not playing. I'm like ‘Coach, I want to play because having that experience I know I can play better.’ And he said, ‘I know you can too, but right now we're in this situation. There'll be another opportunity down the road and you just got to make sure you're ready for it.’ So, there's where my mindset is at.”

What to do with Washington's QBs?
Even with Beck’s feelings, the Redskins seemed poised to land a quarterback this offseason. There has been talk that Washington will try to trade with the Rams to land the No. 2 spot in April’s draft so the Redskins (presumably) can take Robert Griffin III, but the problem with that scenario is that the Browns, with the No. 4 pick, also might want to trade up to No. 2.

Plus, in order to tempt St. Louis, the Redskins would have to put together quite a package to move up from the No. 6 spot.

If the draft fails, they could go after Packers free agent quarterback Matt Flynn, who is most likely at the peak of his earning powers based on two outlandishly good performances in the past two seasons. But Washington also has to ask itself this question: is the unknown of Flynn better than the known Grossman and Beck?

Beck, of course, would answer that question with a resounding no.

"I believe there will be another opportunity," Beck said. "When it comes, I have no control over it.”

No matter what he wants to believe, there’s a pretty good chance that Beck’s time will never come again. At least not with the Redskins.

John Beck believes he deserves another chance

I'm a lifelong Washington Redskins fan and I bleed the Burgundy and Gold, really I do! We need a REAL NFL CALIBER Quarterback, no more Rex Grossman's or John Beck's of the world. Enough is enough with the clowns and wannabe's being paraded out there each Sunday and acting like we have a legit guy at the game's most crucial position.

John Beck's confidence is great, but the guy can't play in the NFL, come on let's be real here. He's a #3 QB at best and I'm not sure if he's really worthy of that to be honest. Rex Grossman is about brain dead, but he is a better QB than Beck, but that's not saying much either. Grossman is at best a #2 QB in the NFL and can't be trusted to lead an NFL offense for 16 games.

The Redskins have improved under Shanny and Son everywhere but at QB and going with guys like Beck and Grossman will prevent any further growth in my opinion. Our defense did improve last season by going from the #31 ranked unit in 2010 to being #13 in 2011 and our pass rush improved from 29 QB Sacks to 41 in 2011. The team has also brought in some very nice young talent on both sides of the ball, but we don't have a QB on the roster at the moment and that must be fixed if we're ever going to become a legitimate contender again!

John Beck believes he deserves another chance

Beck can get the job done.  If he's lucky, he might get a chance to prove it.  History says he won't
Well really he's had 5 years to "prove it" and didn't do it.  Hell, he couldn't even beat out Rex Grossman, who is not exactly an elite QB, last year.  Nor could he beat out the Dolphin QBs in his time there -- and again, his competition was not exactly the cream of the crop.  In short, there is a reason why in 5 years Beck has only been in 9 games with 7 starts (and why in 3 seasons he did not play at all) ----its shown in the 3 TDs and 7Ints and rating of 67.6.  Beck simply is not good enough to be an NFL starter and it has nothing to do with "not getting a chance" because he's 6-2 instead of 6-5.

Why would they keep Beck when they've got a back up like Grossman?
Let's sit here for a minute and consider how ridiculous that question was.

Rex Grossman has proven time and time and time again that he is unreliable. I'm dumbfounded that he still has a job in the NFL.

John Beck believes he deserves another chance

This guy played his heart out last season, he looked as talented and sharp as Brett Favre did his final year in the league, theres something to be said to be compared to such a legend, anyhow this kid is still on the right side of 32, he can blossum into the next Joe Montoya or Sammy Davis Jr, if he just gets a chance
Please, please tell me this was sarcasm or an attempt at humor (I am guessing it is from the Joe Montoya and Sammy Davis Jr references)!  If not, "As sharp as Brett Favre did in his final year in the league"?  Assuming that is true, a 30 year old Beck, in what should be his prime, looked like a broken down 39 year old Favre at the end of his career and this gives you hope for Beck's future as a starting QB?  Really?  Is it the 3 career TDs and 7 Ints that screams "NFL starter" to you?  LOL -- please tell me I am right and you were kidding.

That said, as a Cowboys' fan, I say "Yes, Washington, please give John Beck another season as your starting QB"!

John Beck believes he deserves another chance

Beck says he can be a better QB... I would have to say that is the biggest understatment I have heard in a while. He does deserve another chance. I hear that many UFL teams are looking for QB's. I hope his wish for another chance comes with another team as he has used up all his chances in Washington.

This guy is nuts. He has as firm a hold on reality as Terrell Owens.
