Report: Matt Prater 'likely' to get Broncos tag

We spent an inordinate amount of time putting together a list of players likely to receive franchise tags this offseason earlier today and, of course, we forgot someone. But it wasn't necessarily an obvious name: the Broncos are reportedly "likely" to use their franchise tag on kicker Matt Prater.

That's according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, who writes that it "wouldn't be surprising" if the Broncos used their franchise tag on Prater in order to keep him from hitting the market and pay him a guaranteed salary of $2.6 million.

Prater was pretty stout in 2011, hitting 76 percent of his field goal attempts, including three of four from beyond 50 yards.

His accuracy inside the 40-49 yard range -- just three of seven -- left something to be desired. But his big leg saved the Broncos more than once and he helped get Tim Tebow's legacy really cranked up. (Don't worry: the Big Guy gives it up for Prater.)

If the Broncos franchise Prater, it'll be the first time they've used the tag on a kicker in 10 years, as they hit Jason Elam with the franchise tag in 2002.

And lest you think that franchise-tagging a kicker signifies a team on the decline, the Broncos actually made the playoffs in 2003, 2004 and 2005

Spagsman has spoken. Are you that stupid! He is the kicker. The intelligence coming from a Chiefs fan. State of a franchise, better look at your Chiefs. By the way who won the AFC West?

Wow, franchising a punter. That gives you a nice reading of the state of a franchise. LMAO donkies

That comment gives you a nice reading of the state of your intelligence, and it isn't good.  Since you'll probably have a hard time understanding what I mean, I'll give you a hint: Prater isn't a punter.

And why not?  Prater blasts kicks from 50 plus yards in pressure packed situations to extend games and  to actually WIN games.  Why would you let him go?  He only needs to tweak his accuracy from 40 to 49 yards.  You are the Bronco fan here...who do you franchise besides him?  Let me remind you division titles, League championships and SBs are won with defense and special teams.  I think a kicker or a punter fit into the category.  I'm not laughing at the Broncos tag.  I'm thinking the Broncos are getting serious about keeping the holes that already filled and maybe in the off season get Tebow some more help.  Litterally when the Patriots defense looks like the '85 Bears against your offensive line you should not be worrying about who's kicking and punting the ball.  Maybe some offensive linemen that can pass and run block and stout RB will go a long way.  But Denver is not going to be looking for some has been place kicker on waivers 2 days before the season starts.  Give the Broncos some credit!

Just proves how bad this roster really is. Prater isn't even one of the better FG kickers in the game IMO.

The Broncos have already started rebuilding.  If Prater gets franchised, so be it.  He is a good choice for the tag.  Elway a AVERAGE qb and only winning with T Davis running the ball???  You can compare that to Troy Aikman not winning without Emmit Smith.  My biggest comparison with that subject is Terry Bradshaw.  Where would he be without Swann, Stallworth and some guy named Harris????   To win, there needs to be the right combination of offense with a solid defense.  When Elway was in his other superbowls, he had the recievers to throw to but there wasn't the combination of a strong running game to mix it up with.  As far as Tebow goes, it appears that so many are so willing to jump on the wagon when he wins (aka win over steelers and Big Ben in the playoffs) but when they got blown out in NE so many are saying I told you so.   Tebow has about 16 games under his belt as a starting nfl qb give or take a few and he is being compared to a 2 and 3 time SB QBs.   I have no idea if he is going to be as successful as Brady, Montana, Elway, Rothlesberger or any superbowl winning QB.  But with his work ethic and his willingness to learn, the odds are in his favor and at this time the Broncos are heading in the right direction but they need to work slowly.   It is sad that these days teams are being demanded to be successful immeadiatly instead of building slowly and that is what is hurting a lot of sports.

He is already one of the highest paid kickers. He is valuable but most teams are paying less than or around a million a year for kickers. Good for him. i am sure they will try to sign him to a long term deal before any of this takes effect. he better do that quick because kickers are always about 8 games away from being replaced anyway if they get hurt or go on a cold streak.

Putting the "Tag" on a kicker is laughable.

Why is that laughable?  Who else are the Broncos supposed to tag?  Here is a list of their free agents.

Matt Prater
Brodrick Bunkley
Marcus Thomas
Jason Hunter
Derrick Harvey
Joe Mays
Mario Haggan
Wesley Woodyard
Eddie Royal
Brian Dawkins
Spencer Larsen
Brady Quinn
Daniel Fells
Dante Rosario
Russ Hochstein
Manny Ramirez
Jonathan Wilhite.

None of those other guys are worthy of a franchise tag, so if tagging Prater keeps him from signing somewhere else, you do it, especially if it makes financial sense.  This is from Klis' article in the Denver Post:

The projected salary for a franchised kicker this year is less than $2.6 million — down 19 percent from $3.176 million in 2011.
Prater drew a $1.835 million salary as a restricted free agent in 2011,

So you can tag him and make sure you keep him, and at worst (if you can't sign him to a long-term deal), you're keeping him for less than a million dollars more then what you paid him last year.  Seems to make a lot of sense to me.

Mostly true, but in this case it is the holder (note the gloves) who seems to know instantly the kick is good.  Prater is #5.
