By Josh Katzowitz

It’s generally been reported that Peyton Manning has had three procedures on his neck in the past two years -- which caused him to miss all of last season. But Sports Illustrated’s Don Banks is reporting that Manning actually had a fourth surgery sometime between May 23 and Sept. 9 of last year.

Making matters a little more opaque, Banks also reports that Manning potentially has developed bone spurs in his neck that the Colts believe will require another surgery (and possibly, gulp, another fusion surgery).

The unreported procedure occurred last summer in Chicago and it was a follow-up to Manning’s initial neck surgery. Since this occurred during the lockout, the club physicians only had very little contact with Manning.

Manning's Offseason Saga
"I wouldn't have anything to say about all of that, one way or another,” Manning’s agent, Tom Condon, told SI on Wednesday.

According to Banks’ source, Manning badly wanted to return for the Week 16 Houston game last year, and he participated in an “organized and fully-scripted 30-play practice session” the week before in front of former executive Bill Polian and former coach Jim Caldwell.

More from Banks:
Polian was said to be initially frustrated by the extent and scope of the workout, which he then viewed as a surprising attempt to play in a meaningless situation at the end of a long and defeat-filled season in Indianapolis. League sources say the former leader of the Colts front office was taken off-guard by the intensity and pace of the 30-play session that Manning took part in. Polian was under the belief that it would be conducted at walk-through speed, but instead it was held at typical regular-season tempo with scripted play calls.

A day later, league sources said, the team's strength and conditioning staff impressed upon Polian that it had wanted to see how Manning responded to a fast-paced and scripted workout, because his recovery was not going to reach the next level if he simply continued to lob passes at a leisurely pace. And the practice was conducted from the 25-yard line on in because that was then roughly Manning's ceiling in terms of his arm strength throwing the ball.

Report: Manning had 4th surgery, could need more

Love these post Peyton is so damaged "Retire". My question why should he if his rehab is going well, the surgeon who did operation cleared him to play without anymore risk then any other player who puts on the pads and play a rough sport. If you feel he might get hurt then u should tell all NFL players to retire.  And for this fourth "PROCEDURE" not operation could have been nothing more then a cortizone shot. Plus this procedure was done before the fusion so the bone spurs that may be there would have been cleaned out before the fusion was done. It amazes me how people want to dictate to others what they should do. Choice is Peyton's not ours or the media which to me are a bunch of botttom dwellers looking for anything to smear a 4 time MVP. Also he can't restructure his contract unless he is released, the player association will not allow it. Also no videos showing him throw the ball well you will not see until he is released because again rules is he is  a Colt and can not go looking for another team. Irsay need to get the balls and make a choice start over or keep Manning. To me it makes no difference. Because it is the nature of the sport. Plus as far as I know he practicing and rehabbing  hard to play and looks good and will play in 2012.

Peyton you are one of the truly Great ones.  Don't risk your health and try to play past your Prime.  Leave you legacy one of Super Bowls and not one of a Brett Favre still struggling to go out and play past your prime.  If you were healthy I woud want nothing more than to see you play for many more years, but at the end of the day it's not worth (literally) risking your neck

Manning has about 15 teams tripping over themselves hoping to sign him.If Peyton doesn't retire he'd better pick the team with the best O-line.
In my opinion Mannings career is over & he's one of the last to know it.

jdfrmtn11, I am sorry that I may have given you the wrong impression. I have always in the past and even today continue to be a big fan of Peyton. Whenever he was on TV I made it a point to watch him play. When people compare him to his brother ELI my response has been that Peyton is the better overall QB. May I remind you that I have been a Giant fan since 1964? My only wish for Peyton is that he doesnít hang around like Johnny U did after he hurt his arm. I want to remember him as one of the greatest QB in the history to ever play the game. I donít believe that winning championships defines how great a QB is. Dan Marino didnít win any and he is still considered one of the best to ever play the game. I wish there was some way to correct by screen name to what it was supposed to be. Not Y Hater.

My arms are currently being affected by the same thing that Peyton went though. Fusion surgery is being put off for now, but I know that my arms will probably never be a strong as they were due to the fact that I have had neck/shoulder pain from herniated discs in my neck.

I am very sorry that you are going through this pain.

I realize that sometimes Athletes like Manning what to be able to leave the game on their own terms but sometimes other things dictates their time to leave

If their is any chance of further physical damage I believe that Archie will step in.  If this is the end for Peyton the torch has been passed to Eli.

One thing Peyton will not have to worry about is how he is going to earn a living.  The networks will be beating his door down.

Liar, there have been no girls that have played in college football

yeah i agree with you, peyton played like a little bee-atch in college. you know one of his OL told me peyton was the only guy on the team that made the athletic dept. list him in the program as smaller than he actually was. i never heard of such a thing. probably that meddling fool archie made him do it. apparently, he was worried if defenses though he was big & slow we would blitz him more. which is true. we used to blitz that little sissy doll until he would take "phantom sacks." he still does that in the nfl by the way. falls down without being touched. if you don't believe it. watch the 2010 game indy vs. san diego. even cornbread cris collinsworth made reference to it during the broadcast. peyton ain't tough. he'll check down into handoffs more than any QB out there. cost indy quite a few playoff games, too. check the facts. who has a better playoff record, donovan mcnabb or peyton manning? kurt warner or peyton manning? peyton is hall of fame, but let's remember. rules changes help him get there. he ain't no john elway. or nowhere near john unitas. those men earned their stripes when QB was a football player. for the last 5 years, you might as well put a skirt on these guys. can't touch 'em. MSB8889, i bet you a hell of a flag football player, huh? maybe peyton can be your flag QB?

Peyton, hang it up man. If you need 4 surgerys in a year dont take the chance and play and get paralyzed. Take some inventory on yourself. I think you will find that you have had a great career and that your family needs you more than football. Football is just a game but family is forever. Do the right thing. Retire.
