Tebow WILL have competition next year

Tebow's season ends ingloriously in New England. (AP)

By Josh Katzowitz

We’ve been asking this for a while now: Is Tim Tebow guaranteed to be the Broncos starting quarterback next year? Our own Ryan Wilson brought this up in mid-January and listed a number of free agent quarterbacks Denver could pursue in an effort to knock Tebow out of his starting spot (including Matt Flynn, Jason Campbell and (yep) Kyle Orton).

Even coach John Fox has now confirmed that nobody is going to hand Tebow anything heading into 2012. That’s because Fox said Monday, via the Denver Post, that the team would acquire two quarterbacks in the offseason to compete against Tebow.

"Numbers wise that's accurate,” Fox said. "Who, what, where, when, what market -- it's still way too early how we get those quarterbacks."

You’ll recall that Tebow a was tad controversial last year as he continued to play poorly (for the most part) but still led his team to the AFC West title and a playoff victory against the Steelers (really, by the end of Denver’s run, our colleague Pete Prisco was one of the few who remained steadfast in his belief that Tebow is not a legit NFL quarterback).

What to do with Tebow?

But that doesn’t mean the read option offense Fox and Mike McCoy had to install midway through the season when Denver decided to replace Orton with Tebow will continue to work in 2012. Tebow still has to prove he has the arm strength, the accuracy and the ability to play effectively in the pocket.

“I think at some point he’ll have to be if he wants to play a long time,” Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey said in January. “That’s one area he’s going to have to improve to be elite in this league. But the things he does running the ball -- he can make some throws, it’s just being comfortable doing it. He’s got to get better at it, and when he does, the sky’s the limit for him.”

Of course, the Broncos will HAVE to bring in at least two quarterbacks, because Tebow and practice-squader Adam Weber are the only signal-callers under contract for next year. Brady Quinn -- who apparently had a third-down package set for him in the playoffs (was he planning to Tim Tebow Tim Tebow?) -- is a free agent, and there probably isn’t much reason for him to return Denver.

So, for now, Tebow is the starter.

"He's going to come into our camp as the starting quarterback," Fox said. "He's young. He can get better."

Yeah, what does he mean by that? What can Tebow do better?

Um, this.

"It's the precision on the passing, it's the accuracy, the footwork, the mechanics, the rhythm, the timing, the quickness, the release. Everything," Broncos general manager Brian Xanders said recently. "And he wants to work at it. And he's dedicated. He's going to work really hard at improving those things. .. We're excited about him improving in those areas."

Until, perhaps, the Broncos can find somebody else who’s better than what we saw from Tebow last year.

Quinn had his chance in Cleveland.. and Denver.. Just like Mike Ditka said please STOP talking about Quinn.. we've seen enough of him.. He played a SOFT schedule at Notre Dame.. while Tebow was winning National Championships in the SEC..

Tebow WILL have competition next year

Hands down WORST QB in the NFL.  Fluke plays, 60+ FG's, and undisciplined D's led to majority of Tebow's wins.  Remember he played 3.45 qtrs of disgustingly, bad football each outing.  Down the stretch he finished 1-4, only b/c the Steelers were too proud to change their defense and defend the option.  The Bills, Pats, and Chiefs made Tebow look foolish and they all have bad D, so clearly the league has blueprints on how to stop the option.  Which means Tebow will now have to pass - he can't pass the footballl.  he's the worst rated QB in the NFL and over 90% of ALL College QB's can throw better than this guy.  People need to realize the Tebowmania was a fluke event.  When NFL scouts - who know more than the media and fans say that Tebow is a 7th round pick that will need to be a TE if he wants to play in the NFL - believe them, not the hype of a guy who needs to run an option offense b/c he can't take snaps behind center.....

Is Tebow the best QB in the league? clearly not but his team won their division and they won a game in the playoffs. You can look at a guy like Joe Flacco who gets his team to the playoffs each year and all we get is that he cant play in the NFL. There are plenty of QBs in this league who have had long careers and have won nothing yet we never hear about them. Give these guys a break, If your Denvers GM its in your best interest to build the deepest team you can come up with at every position not just QB.

If I were the Broncos owner, I would do everything possible to move up in the draft and pick RG3 .His style will be conducive to what they need from him, and will not be a 180 degree from the style of Tebow. RG3 would give Tebow competition and probably beat out Tebow for passing accuracy and strength. I hope for Tebow to succeed just as the next person, but you can't be elite without being challenged, and proving you belong in the starting QB position. Those who say they shouldn't bring in QB's to compete for the job didn't see what happened to the Colts without Manning. All other positions have competitions for starters; why should QB's be exempt?

Brady Quinn wasn't competition for Tebow. That should make him one of the cheapest options on the free agent market.

@badpick4sporsin

They need to start building around Tebow. I understand where this comes from, when John Elway even questions Tebow, but i just don't get it, he's obvious ready to play and lead the Broncos. Guys rally around him. Is it because he is controversial, being an unconvential QB on and off the field? I just don't get it, why isn't anyone really talking about building around Tim Tebow?
I don't think it is because he is controversial at all. Fans - and television - love the right kind of controversy. After all, the most controversial quarterback relative to the times that I have seen during my viewing years was none other than Joe Namath who had the gall to publically predict an AFL victory over the Colts in Super Bowl III (?), have a Fu Manchu mustache, and publically displayed his pleasure after the victory by holding high his index finger in his "we're number one" jesture. (He also wore pantyhose for a TV commercial). He is still admired for his achievements. (Despite his character flaws including his on-the-field drunk performances).

The trouble with building a team around a quarterback with a unique set of uncommon skills, if that is what Tebow has, is that it builds a house of cards. If Tebow is injured, then what? The team could be in seriously dangerous water. And for a very long time.

pjohnson81, maybe you lacked intangibles like toughness, intelligence, and/or leadership skills.  OR... maybe you just sucked.
