RG3 probably won't throw at combine, wants 4.4 40

Robert Griffin III is one of the more interesting athletes at this year's NFL combine. He's a big-time athlete whose stock can only go up as the draft approaches. If he shines at the combine and at his Pro Day -- now scheduled for March 21 -- teams will scramble for the No. 2 pick the Rams currently hold.

But it won't be because of his throws, as Griffin said on the Dan Patrick Show that he "probably" wouldn't throw at the Combine.

"I don’t think so," Griffin said Tuesday. "It’s still up in the air but I'm probably not going to throw."

RG3, as Rob Rang noted recently, already said he was unlikely to throw at the combine. Griffin might not need to throw, however. He's going to run the 40-yard dash, and if he posts a sub-4.4-second time, it's going to generate some buzz. Griffin thinks he can.

"I think there's a possibility," Griffin said before acknowledging he'd gone under 4.4 in the 40-yard dash before.

Griffin ran track in high school (he owns a pile of Texas state records) and early in his career at Baylor (he set a Midwest Regional record for the 400-meter hurdles) so speed isn't an issue. Size is Griffin's issue; as CBSSports.com's Clark Judge pointed out in his recent combine preview, Griffin's measurements in the coming week are something to watch.

(The size versus speed thing is also why the RG3-Cam Newton comparisons are just silly. Newton's 6'5", 248 pounds. Griffin's 6'2" 220. If Newton could run a 4'4" he'd be Superman. Literally.)

But it's speed that will really cause teams to fall in love with Griffin. If he goes sub 4.4, the biggest winner is St. Louis, because the auction for that top pick is going to get hot and heavy.

Speaking of auctioning for Griffin's services, it's also worth noting that RG3 signed with Adidas. The shoe company announced the news on Tuesday and Griffin confirmed it on Patrick's show. And we dug up this first Adidas commercial with Griffin, who Adidas is wisely marketing as "RG III."

You know, what with their three-stripe logo and all.

RG3 probably won't throw at combine, wants 4.4 40

So a small-ish QB who is really fast - how does that translate to a highly successful NFL QB? Vick - inconsistent and hurt every season; Randall Cunningham - never won the big one and also inconsistent; Meanwhile look at the QB's in the Super Bowl lately - Eli Manning twice, Ben Roethlisberger, Brady, Rodgers, Brees...Nonoe of these guys are fast but all can escape pressure (Ben and Rodgers are the best when it comes to making things happen with their legs, but they're no speedsters).

Having sub 4.4 speed doesn't help him make better throws or get the ball out quicker, or read defenses better - etc.

He may or may not be the next big thing, but I wouldn't trade a lot to move up for him if you are a team, like the Redskins that needs to maximize the draft because you need so many things. If he falls to you then take him, otherwise he goes where he goes for me. Now about his decision not to throw, I think that is just dumb. His strength is his touch on the long ball and he could probably raise his stock by doing that, but if he is not going to throw, then don't go at all. THen yo ucan keep lying about your size right up until draft day. At the combine they don't lie. If you are a fraction under 6'2" then they will say it. If you are really 216 they will say it. Seems to me he should just stay home, go to baylors pro day where he can choose to not get measured and do what he likes, with his own receivers, etc. And then wait to see where he is going to play his home games.

I think there is still a surprise around the corner and somebody is ging to trade with Minnesota instead of the ransom St Louis wants, move in front of Cleveland and Washington, and draft him. I think it's one of three teams that do it. Miami, Seattle, or Dallas. Iknow you don't see Dallas as a player, but they know Romo is a farse no matter what they say in public and Jerry Jones has as much as anyone to make a move.

RG3 probably won't throw at combine, wants 4.4 40

A lot of top-ranked QBs chose not to throw at the combine and throw at their Pro-Day instead because they are not familiar with the receivers they are throwing to in combine workouts. For guys like RGIII and Luck, they can do more harm than good by throwing at the combine. They have far more room to move down than they do to move up.

Also, if they save their throwing to their Pro-Day, they will give other guys from their school the exposure they would not normally get. All the teams show up to see RGIII or Luck throw, and while they are there they see the other draft eligible guys from Baylor and Stanford. Not a bad move to help the other guys from the program.

The only fact is that this guy is going to be a 1st round draft pick. After that, it is all in his hands, so about just giving him a chance to prove himself worthy of any label, whether is be savior or bust?

@district c 9.... Skins are my favorite NFC team but browns are my hometown team. Either way, I'm happy to watch him for the next 15 yrs. That said, if the browns want rg3, they get him...no way skins can match what the browns can give them. The browns have the 4 pick, so st Louis can still get one of the two players they wanted at 2 by trading w Cleveland...dc can't offer that. Cleveland also has the 22 overall pick and the skins can't match it. You might be lucky though because I don't think the browns want him unless he falls to them at 4.
