Colts could sign Luck as soon as Friday

Luck appears to be the future in Indy, the only question is when. (US PRESSWIRE)

By Ryan Wilson

The road to the first-overall pick isn't a smooth one. There's all the losing, the waning fan interest, the almost certain turnover on the coaching staff and the roster. But once the offseason arrives and the new faces are in place, hope is renewed.

Now that Colts fans seem to have accepted that Peyton Manning's best days are behind him and Andrew Luck is the future, there are reasons for optimism. Typically, the NFL Draft takes place on the last weekend of April, but the Colts, should they choose, can sign Luck (or any other draft-eligible player) as early as … Friday. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello tells PFT that after a pair of coin flips locks in the draft order, Indianapolis can ink Luck to a contract.

NFL Draft prep
Greasing the skids: the new CBA includes a rookie wage scale which means that holdouts are much less likely since there isn't much to negotiate. One of the benefits to doing this sooner than later: it will officially close the book on the Manning era, something owner Jim Irsay is probably eager to do, and the focus would be on Luck, the Colts' next franchise quarterback.

(Then again, maybe Irsay wasn't joking when he said he "would love to have Manning back.")

Should Indy sign Luck before the draft, however, it doesn't mean that the Rams would immediately be on the clock with the No. 2 pick. Aiello explains that only the team holding the first-overall selection has that option.

This is good news for the Browns, Redskins and any other outfit in the market for Robert Griffin III, who is expected to go as high as second overall. It's also good news for the Rams because they'll be able to trade out of the pick and improve their roster in the process.

Well thank god for the new CBA these #1 picks can will no longer put a huge stranglehold on the salary cap like they did in the past, such as, Ryan Leaf, and Jamarcus Russell. Although teams are investing their first pick which could go to someone else who might do better in the NFL it won't kill a teams salary cap.

@Burger2000

I didn't say they "Won" - I said they made it to the championship.  Yes, in spite of their play - not because of it.  Some of them on the list did win.  You just confirmed what I was saying.  You don't have to have a Hall of Fame or All-Pro QB to get to (or even win in some of those cases) a Super Bowl.  You need a good team around them.  A great QB might win a Super Bowl with a not-so-great team, sure.  I'll give you that.  If Indy works this right - since Andrew Luck seems to be a once-in-a-lifetime kinda guy (according to many here).....they can walk away with an immediate Super Bowl contender.

Drafting Kellen Moore (who could develop into a decent NFL QB) and bringing in a veteran (if they don't keep Manning) in case he isn't quite ready to be their guy this coming season would be all it takes.  They could even keep the QB's they have now as insurance beyond that.

If I were the Colts I would trade down and pick up some talent and more draft picks.

1st Round (after trade-down) - David DeCastro - OG - Stanford

2nd Round - Jerel Worthy - DT - Michigan State

3rd Round - Nate Potter - OT - Boise State.....or.....Bobby Massie - OT - Mississippi

4th Round - Kellen Moore - QB - Boise State

5th Round - Tommy Streeter - WR - Miami....or....DeVier Posey - WR - Ohio State....or....Stephen Hill - WR - Georgia Tech

6th Round - Edwin Baker - RB - Michigan State.....or......DeAngelo Peterson - TE - LSU

7th Round - Rokevious Watkins - OT - South Carolina..or..Janzen Jackson - CB - McNeese State..or..Tramain Thomas - S - Arkansas..or..Max Holloway - DE - Boston College

Obviously, that's assuming these guys are available at that point....but that would be a pretty good rebuild.  If they happen to shore up some of those other positions as part of the trade-down for Luck, other picks would be more beneficial.  They could also have a few more picks in addition to these from the trade.

@McNair never won a Super Bowl, just an fyi. Also, I would challenge you that none of those QBs won more than 1 championship and the rings they did win were in spite of their play, not because.

IndyForever:

For that small list you gave, there are a lot more that started their first year and had "nothing" careers.  Either they got the crap beat out of them, they couldn't adjust to the pro game or they just weren't better than "the next guy".

Until it happens, it's all "what-if" - either way.  Luck could start his first year and that could be the first of many, on his way to a HoF career.  He could start his first year and get knocked around so bad that he's out of football before he really gets started.  He could start his first year and they might decide he's not the guy they thought he would be.  As of right now, the only thing most of us would agree on is that they have a lot more issues than just the guy under center.

rchar2:

You have to have a big-time QB to win a championship?  Really?  I just posted some names of QBs that got to a championship that didn't have very good careers.  Let's re-visit.

Jim McMahon, David Woodley, Ron Jaworski, Earl Morrall, Joe Kapp, Bill Kilmer, Vince Ferragamo, Tony Eason, Jeff Hostetler, Mary Rypien, Stan Humphries, Neil O'Donnell, Chris Chandler*, Steve McNair, Trent Dilfer, Jake Delhomme....a few others.

Nothing funnier than a sarcastic comment that spells Einstein incorrectly.  Can't claim a typo, either, you thought it was spelled that way. And all caps to boot, to be sure it was clear you could not spell Einstein.  Priceless.

Why would they sign a guy early? Isn't the rookie cap in place? What if Luck gets in a car crash or commits a crime after they sign him early?

Also, signing the first pick early takes away some consternation by the other teams who are jockeying for their guy. I would start a rumor that RG3 is still a candidate for the Colts. Throw the league into a speculation frenzy. Don't let them have any confidence that they will get their guy if they move up via trade. Then pick Luck on draft day and sign him right before camp.
