Luck appears to be the future in Indy, the only question is when. (US PRESSWIRE)

The road to the first-overall pick isn't a smooth one. There's all the losing, the waning fan interest, the almost certain turnover on the coaching staff and the roster. But once the offseason arrives and the new faces are in place, hope is renewed.

Now that Colts fans seem to have accepted that Peyton Manning's best days are behind him and Andrew Luck is the future, there are reasons for optimism. Typically, the NFL Draft takes place on the last weekend of April, but the Colts, should they choose, can sign Luck (or any other draft-eligible player) as early as … Friday. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello tells PFT that after a pair of coin flips locks in the draft order, Indianapolis can ink Luck to a contract.

NFL Draft prep
Greasing the skids: the new CBA includes a rookie wage scale which means that holdouts are much less likely since there isn't much to negotiate. One of the benefits to doing this sooner than later: it will officially close the book on the Manning era, something owner Jim Irsay is probably eager to do, and the focus would be on Luck, the Colts' next franchise quarterback.

(Then again, maybe Irsay wasn't joking when he said he "would love to have Manning back.")

Should Indy sign Luck before the draft, however, it doesn't mean that the Rams would immediately be on the clock with the No. 2 pick. Aiello explains that only the team holding the first-overall selection has that option.

This is good news for the Browns, Redskins and any other outfit in the market for Robert Griffin III, who is expected to go as high as second overall. It's also good news for the Rams because they'll be able to trade out of the pick and improve their roster in the process.

frappe - for all the 1st round QB's taken since 1970 I can give you a very LARGE list of complete failures.  You say out of 19 #1's that 11 have been pretty good.  Well, the other 8 weren't, apparently.  Teams had put their hopes on these 8 guys for years to come.  The #1 picks are the #1 picks for a reason.  Yeah, they're good.  Especially in college.  That doesn't mean that if you put any of those QBs you mentioned on the David Carr-led Texans that they would have lasted more than 3 or 4 years.  Point is, if you have nothing around him - he will fail....and he will get hurt.  How will that help the Colts rebuild?

If they draft Luck and don't keep Manning, they sure better bring somebody in that can handle it or someone they don't care only lasts a year or two.  They'll still lose a bunch of games and may get the #1 pick again if they start Luck or some other scrub.

Familiarize yourself with the new CBA if you said paying Andrew Luck is a concern.  Andrew Luck cannot negotiate where Peyton can.  Peyton will be elsewhere this year.

To answer the question it would be a good amount cheaper to sign Luck because there is a salary cap for the draft now unlike 2 years ago. Where it almost made more sense to go after a proven veteran before the cap then drafting a a guy in the top 5 if not top 10. But with drafting a guy with the 1st pick you have to worry will he live up to potential. The Colts have alot of holes but as we all know, but it looks like there going to start over and usually when that happens the first thing to look at is a QB for the future.

Luck appears to be a fine prospect, but behind a makeshift offensive line, with no runningbacks to hand off to,and aging or banged up wide outs????Never mind a defense with more holes than a slice of swiss cheese.Payton's arm might be strong enough to keep the Colts out of the running for another number one pick, but this team is in shambles. It is time to rebuilt, start where it counts, you need a line on both sides of the ball not another high profile Qb ...TRADE lUCK,and get e few quality pieces in return. How many number one QB picks have lived to expectation? and with the Colts record for ervaluating talent????

I think money also has a lot to do with the future for Indy. What will the cost be for Luck. Will it match or exceed Paytons paycheck?

The Colts are so hellbent on signing Luck. Fine. He is not proven. He has no NFL experience. He is suppose to replace Payton Manning who's future is questionable with injury recovery problems. Payton says he's OK and his past record with telling the truth is impecable. If he is OK and I believe he is, he still has 3-5 years of possitive production left in the tank. Hmmmm. Luck could be a bust or he could be a great but the odds are against him being a great. If Payton says he is going to be OK, I beleive him. I would rather have a proven recipe in the pan than a raw piece of fish that could spoil easily. My gut says Luck will be a bust and he is selected by the colts, will have the pressure of filling the shoes of arguably the QB to play the game.
