Flynn

By Josh Katzowitz

The list of potential suitors for Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn continues to grow. Already, you know the Dolphins are interested, and Green Bay probably would like to bring him back so the team can then (possibly) trade him away.

But according to the Canton Repository, the Browns also will make a play for the fourth-year veteran who’s made exactly two starts in his career (though he admittedly was pretty awesome in both those starts).

As Steve Doerschuk writes, “There will be a budget that will not be exceeded in the play for Flynn. Peyton Manning’s presence on the market drives down his price.  … That still leaves the Dolphins as a suitor … and as the likely lander of Flynn.”

The paper also notes that Browns president Mike Holmgren is “no great fan” of quarterback competition, and if Cleveland can land Flynn, the team would make him the starter instead of Colt McCoy.

It’s still unclear whether the Browns, who hold the No. 4 spot in April’s draft, will try to trade with the Rams to move up to the No. 2 position to grab Baylor’s Robert Griffin III, but on Wednesday, Browns coach Pat Shurmur had some nice things to say about McCoy*.

In like Flynn?
"We're looking forward him to improving through the offseason," Shurmur said. "I think it will make a big difference in year two (of) me being here.  I told him to prepare himself to get as much out of this offseason as possible. I'm expecting him to attack this offseason and get as good as he can get within our system. He really works at things and that's going to help him."

*Basically, it seems like nobody has any idea what the Browns will do.

Flynn, meanwhile, is looking forward to striking out on his own as a potential starting quarterback.

"I'm a confident person but the element of the unknown makes you wish March 13 was tomorrow," Flynn said this week. "I've loved being a Packer, and it's not 100 percent sure I'm leaving Green Bay, but as a competitor and football player, that's what you play the game for -- to be a starter in the league. Hopefully some teams will be interested in me and I can find a good opportunity. I want to lead a team and I'm excited about it. But I can't talk to teams now. I don't know if I'm on their radar. It's going to be a long month leading up to that time -- waiting and wondering."

While you still have to consider Miami the favorite to land Flynn (even if there are no billboards of him on I-95) because of the connection with new Dolphins coach/former Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, it will be interesting to see if the Browns actually can make themselves a player in this lottery.

Report: Browns will go after Matt Flynn

Where are you from, Katzowitz - New York? You'd better start doing some homework. Seattle is going after Flynn with Paul Allen's dough and can outbid anyone. I can't believe you left them out of the picture.

The Browns need an impact player and they blew it last year by passing on Julio Jones.  If they do it again and end up with a lineman and another pick, shame on them.

Either way, if it's RG3 or Flynn, their careers are doomed.

I'm not saying Flynn will fail, but we have seen this before.  In the 90's Scott Mitchell had a huge day for the Dolphins in a similar situation, and the lions gave him the farm.  Buyer beware on this one.  I have no doubt that he will be an ok QB, but don't cash in your bonds to get him!

RG3 might be great some day...but he also might be just OK.  Regardless, he's not Cam Newton and cant' take those hits.  The browns entire offense (starting w/ coaches) was a disaster last year and any QB in the league would have struggled.  I'd rather see them sign a FA WR and draft RB, WR in first round and OL in second.  Get some freaking talent on offense.  Trent Richardson/Wright from Baylor and best Tackle remaining or DE

No, I don't think he'll get Cleveland or Miami to a superbowl this year, nobody could, not even Peyton.  I do think Miami or Cleveland have a much better shot at super bowl in the next five years with Flynn than RG3.  And I do think whoever ends up with Flynn, whether it
s Miami, Seattle, Cleveland, or Washington, will win more games than the Panthers and whoever drafts RG3.

LOL...excitement doesn't get teams to the superbowl!!!...  I'd bet anyone even up that Matt Flynn wins more games next year than Cam Newton or RG3, not even knowing what team he end up on... Matt Flynn has played behind one of the best quarterbacks in the game for several seasons, he is well groomed and ready, and without any doubt the better choice for a team to win in the next several years than the likes of RG3.
Do you really think Matt Flynn is going to get Cleveland or Miami to a Superbowl? Neither team has enough talent to make that significant of an improvement even if Flynn played up to expectations. Sitting behind Aaron Rodgers and having one exceptional game doesn't prove enough to me to invest in him as a franchise QB. I believe Flynn will trend closer to Cassel and Kolb than Matt Schaub and hold some overzealous, QB-desperate team back from being anything other than mediocre. At least with an exciting young player with high upside the team would have something to build around and possibly be taken seriously 3 years down the road instead of being stuck in neutral with an overrated journeyman QB.

No more chasing for RG3 or Tannehill? I'm surprised.

LOL...excitement doesn't get teams to the superbowl!!!  Cam Newton won how many games last year?  Michael Vick has been to how many super bowls?  I'd bet anyone even up that Matt Flynn wins more games next year than Cam Newton or RG3, not even knowing what team he end up on.  Sometimes the less flashy quarterback is better for your franchise, players like Vick, Tebow, Newton, or RG3 are always gonna be more suseptible to injuries, injuries that can cost your team's season.  This whole ramble is my response to anyone that doesn't think taking a chance on Matt Flynn is a good idea.  Matt Flynn has played behind one of the best quarterbacks in the game for several seasons, he is well groomed and ready, and without any doubt the better choice for a team to win in the next several years than the likes of RG3.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: you'll see how good he is.

Report: Browns will go after Matt Flynn

This would be terrifying news to me if I were a Browns fan. Some stupid team (likely Miami or Cleveland) will give this guy a Matt Cassel/Kevin Kolb like deal based on hype generated from a small sample of games (on good offenses). Not that RG3 is guaranteed to have a Cam Newton type year but at least he will generate excitement and if ever there were a franchise in need of a shot in the arm it's the Browns. If they don't come away from the draft with RG3, they'll be both mediocre and boring for another half-decade.
