INDIANAPOLIS -- Perhaps you've heard already: the Miami Dolphins are in the market for a quarterback. There are myriad rumors about who they want; Matt Flynn works because Joe Philbin's his old coach. Peyton Manning works because, well, he's Peyton Manning. What about Robert Griffin III? And don't sleep on Ryan Tannehill, who Mike Sherman coached at Texas A&M.

According to Philbin and general manager Jeff Ireland, the team is in fact open to a short-term solution at the position, despite having never successfully filled the role since the departure of my esteemed colleague Mr. Marino many moons ago.

"I don't think it has to be a long-term solution," Ireland said. "I think you can get a short-term solution. Obviously you'd like a long-term solution, but you can do both. You can certainly try and get both in that regard. But it's my job to try and grow the team for today and for the future. And Joe's responsibility is to try and win today with a mind to the future as well."

Philbin echoed Ireland's sentiments, saying that there's "not necessarily" a preference when it comes to acquiring a quarterback for the future or a quarterback who can step in right now and win.

"Not necessarily," Philbin said. "The quarterback is an important position in the offense and an important position on the football team. We've got to have a player perform with success at that position. But we don't have a mandate that the player has to be 24-years-old or 33-years-old or 29-years old.

"We're looking for a manager, a leader, an accurate passer, a decision maker and a guy who can make a play when we need it. And however that shakes out, it's fine by us."

Since Marino departed, the Dolphins have rolled out the following quarterbacks as starters: Jay Fiedler, Damon Huard, A.J. Feeley, Gus Frerotte, Sage Rosenfels, Brian Griese, Joey Harrington, Daunte Culpepper, Cleo Lemon, Trent Green, John Beck, Chad Pennington, Chad Henne, Tyler Thigpen and Matt Moore.

That's sixteen quarterbacks since Marino last played in 1999. The Dolphins, more than almost any team in the NFL (with the possible exception of the Redskins) need a long-term answer at quarterback.

But that long-term answer might not come this year, especially whatever short-term solution they're eying gives the Dolphins a chance to win now.

Dolphins OK with 'short-term' fix at QB right now

To be "OK" with a short term fix at the quarterback position is precisely the reason why the dolphins don't make the playoffs let alone go to the superbowl. Jeff Ireland should be fired for the increasingly poor decisions made in the past few years.

Aww don't get all fussy Skippy, we all know you haven't made a football comment in ages. It's always about Tebow's faith this and that, and I've figured out God, and you're not Dan Marino's esteemed anything, and ooh nice sunglasses. Great sports commentary. Not a football comment in the bunch. Have you even watched a game? If you had to watch the Dolts this year then I do feel for ya. But what could anyone seriously expect from someone that had 3 posts and the original quote linked to the movie telling them as much, and still couldn't figure out it was a movie quote? Can't wait to hear a person that took all day to figure that one out has to say about the mysteries of the universe. Please, do enlighten all of us lesser mortals. Then I'll make you a heifer with cheese. Cool

Damn Chunky you like bein' thick don't ya? The 'esteemed' comment was a quote from a movie. It'd be like saying Adam Sandler was a better tackler than Joe Montana.. I mean Joe Mantegna. Then some moron commenting that Adam Sandler never played football. (Guess who you are in that example) It's a quote from a movie maroon. It has nothing to do with the writers association with Dan Marino. Seems like someone that's figured out the universe would know that, or at least have gotten it after having all day to deduce about it. And as for your stalking comment, I'm on a Dolphins thread, and I've been a Dolphin fan my whole life. Says so on my profile. What about you? No Tebow here. No Payton either. Why don't you go comment about your broke neck bobble head QB? Oh yea, you're a troll. Let me guess, with all the comments about life and God and football, you don't have anything to add besides a comment about my use of sunglasses or some other comment worthy of a 3rd grader on the bus. (it's not really a guess when you know it's true) Prove me wrong? You won't, cuz you can't. Have fun following threads with people on them and commenting on other teams, you've got a lot of that to look forward to in your future Sonny. Cool

And what does the link have to do with Brinson calling himself an esteemed colleague?

because the link explains (or attempts to) that he in fact WASNT really calling himself Marino's colleague in the way you are painting it, but quoting the movie exactly

if someone is bretahing funny and you said to the "Luke, I am your father!" most people would make the connection and know you are not actually claiming to be related to them.

Granted this one was a tad more obscure, but as the movie was pretty Phin-centric, it was reasonable to expect people to pick up the reference

And what does the link have to do with Brinson calling himself an esteemed colleague? They work for the same company, they don't blog together. It' like you calling the CEO of the company your a janitor for a "colleague".

Wow pimpslutted. You can't help but kick your own azz can you? Will even highlighted the link to that being a movie quote from Ace Ventura and you still had to go out of your way to make a balloon knot out of yourself. Kudos. Yes, I mean the candy bar jeanyus. And yea, still waitin' for that "I, pimpslapped stinkypants from 'da Ville and of the CBS sports message boards and DeVry hair styling institute fame have deduced there is no supreme being in the universe based on ______." Have fun filling in the blank and with your other nonsensical hating troll, we know you're not going to be wasting any extra time scouting the Dolts chances next year, or watching the 'Cards or the Hosers path through the NCAA tournament. As for UK fans, well our future's so bright.. we gotta Cool.

Dolphins OK with 'short-term' fix at QB right now

you forgot Ray Lucas on the list of post Marino starters for the Phins.  Not that I blame you, as a Phinfan I've been trying (in vain, sadly) to forget his stint in Miami ever since 02.
also I disagree with the widespread notion (what i assume the last sentence of the article is hinting at) that Manning guarantees any team 10+ wins just by touching the field, The huge dropoff for the Colts in his absense strongly suggests it but I think the rest of the roster was slowly declining while Manning covered for them a bit, and it collided in the perfect storm of further disrepair this year, and the loss of their champion.  it is speculation of course but I believe they may not have even been a playoff team with manning in tow last season

and I also don't believe Miami is one central piece of the puzzle away from a serious title run, especially if they are serious about this transition to a 4-3 front, which brings an almost automatic decline no matter how versatile the defenders are, as some names shufle around and try to find their niche, while some new players have to be added in to cover gaps.

So I've sort of resigned 2012 as a lost season in terms of a realistic title run and I would rather see them explore a lognt emr option, no matter how much of a longshot...than try to squeeze the last few drops out of Peyton Manning.
