INDIANAPOLIS -- The 2012 NFL Draft order is finalized: the Dolphins and Chiefs won coin tosses (against the Panthers and Seahawks, respectively) on Friday morning in Indianapolis to secure the eighth (Miami) and 11th (KC) picks in the draft.

The Panthers will now select ninth in April, and the Seahawks -- losers to the Chiefs -- will select 12th. The coin tosses took place early in the morning, utilizing specially-designed, commemorative coins. There were no media present (or allowed, for that matter), but the teams streamed the flip live on their various websites.

"It kind of went straight up and it didn’t start flipping until it hit the ground," Chiefs GM Scott Pioli described. "It’s a huge difference because in that one spot in the draft you don’t know who the other team is going to pick. It’s just an earlier opportunity for you to get what you want in the draft."

While the difference between winning and losing the toss is only one pick, it does make a huge difference. If a team like the Panthers was (hypothetically) eying someone like UNC defensive end Quinton Coples, they'd be in a world of hurt with the Dolphins now one spot ahead of them.

"I think it makes a big difference,” Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland said on Thursday. "I’ve never been into a draft where I didn’t feel like if you’re at the 10th pick there are nine players and if you’re the 22nd pick there’s usually 20 players so you’re usually right behind it. So the higher up the board I can get, as long as it’s with the flip of a coin, I’ll take it."

Perhaps the biggest difference in the one draft spot is the value in a potential trade: for every spot that a team moves up, the value of the pick grows exponentially.

Just ask anyone trying to move up to the Rams spot at No. 2 overall.

Chiefs are going to be the 49ers of next season? WOW as a Chiefs fan I have to say I am very very down on this team and in fact I have come to grips with the reality that my Chiefs will probably never play in a Superbowl in my lifetime (and I should have 40 more years on this earth). Where to begin? We'll we have no QB, I still hold out a bit of hope that Stanzi could catch fire and win this job. If not we'll be heading into the season with Steve Elvis Matt DeBerg Cassell Grbac Orton. The problem there is I have absolutely no faith in that guy. He is not a premier QB. in fact, except for a few years with Joe Montana and the combo of great offensive coordinator and good qb during the Green/Saunders era, we have had absolutely no talent at QB. Another year of Steve Elvis Matt DeBerg Cassell Grbac Orton will only certify what we already know and that is Steve Elvis Matt DeBerg Cassell Grbac Orton sucks.

Must be a slow day at the combine.  While I would like the Chiefs to do well again, I just dont get where Pioli is going with the team.  Carr is a proven player and we go out and get a raiders cap problem and still dont have any competition for the QB position.  As Far as the Rams go, Jeff Fisher is secretely smiling like a cat watching to see what the team can get for the #2 pick,  If they can upgrade the o-Line and get a WR for Bradford, the team has some potential.  CAnt wait for the draft as the NBA is boring me to pieces.

It usually takes CBS/eye-not-on-editing longer than two paragraphs to contradict themselves.

Embarrassing.

Pete Carroll is smarter the Scott Pioli??? Pioli has won 3 super bowls. Hahahahahaha. Pete Carroll has maybe two more years left in the league before the Seahawks figure out he can't cut it at the Pro level and send him back to college.

Pete Carroll will be coaching University of Illinois or some other obscure college team in three years. This is the same Pete Carroll who
said that Tavarius Jackson is a starting caliber QB just a year ago this week. Now he's looking for a new QB. How much evidence do you need to see that Pete Carroll is a charlatan as far as being a general manager in the NFL is concerned??

Good luck with Haley next year Ax.  It's Rooney II's team now.  That clown's gonna be the next Al Davis/Jerry Jones.  Try to keep Roethlisberger out of the bars this summer!

Chiefs are already on a roll for the 2012 season.  They could easily do what SF did if the running game is healed and one of the QB's comes through
Or, more likely, they do what the Rams did and tank.

I heard on the street that Barry Sanders won the coin flip with Deion Sanders to stay retired.  The loser has to sign with the CFL.   LOL
