Report: Packers to cut Clifton; redo Driver deal

Cliftonem>By Josh Katzowitz

With the Packers recently agreeing to a two-year contract worth $15 million with tight end Jermichael Finley and with the team trying to figure out what to do with backup quarterback Matt Flynn, Yahoo Sports is reporting that Green Bay will cut left tackle Chad Clifton and restructure receiver Donald Driver’s contract.

If the Packers were to release Clifton and Driver, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel points out that the team would save about $10 million in the salary cap, which could be enough for it to franchise-tag Flynn (for the likely purposes of trading him somewhere else).

Clifton represents $5.7 million of that salary cap total, but assuming Driver restructures his contract, the Packers will add significantly to the reported $10-13 million they’re already supposedly under the cap. Tagging Flynn, meanwhile, would cost about $14 million for 2012.

While Clifton has been a key component of the Green Bay offense since the 2000 season, he only played six regular-season games last year because of a hamstring injury. Though Clifton returned for the playoffs, Marshall Newhouse played well enough in replacing Clifton that the Packers must believe he’s ready to take over the job full time.

Newhouse wasn’t great, especially in early performances, but compared to Clifton’s $5.5 million salary, the Packers could be looking at Newhouse’s $490,000 base salary for 2012 and figuring that Clifton is not 10 times the player Newhouse is.

So happy DD is staying but now we have to worry about him breaking his foot while dancing.  Maybe he can initiate a Lambeau Leap dance.  Thanks to him they will draw a very large audience this season and even the guys will have to take a peek.

You are aware that both Marshall Newhouse and Derrick Sherrod are LT's right? Plus it is also possible the Packers will flip Bulaga to the left side and move Newhouse to the right side. So not sure were you get this idea that the LT position will be played by an undrafted free agent when the Packers already have three options on the roster.

I don't know if you realized it or not but Newhouse was just as good as Clifton last year and 1/10th the price. Also when you consider they have a first round pick in Sherrod who if healthy will get the whole training camp at LT(instead of LG) so I'd say they are set at Tackle for the future. If push comes to shove they got EDS who could move to LG while Lang moves to LT and they would barely miss a beat because Lang was very good at Tackle when needed last year. I think what you said shows your little knowledge towards the Packers situation. Any person that has followed the Packers recently could of guessed Clifton would not be around next year.

Thanks Clifton for the years of great work.   Clifton was a rock at LT for many years.   Cliffy, if after football you want to go look for Warren Sapp, we got your back.

Releasing the only NFL LT on your team is just what Thompson always does. If the Packers need a left tackle, you can be sure that Tightwad Teddy will try to fill the position with an undrafted FA. He let go of Jenkins, didn't replace him, and had the worst pass defense in NFL history. Plus he had the worst pass rush in the league. He has CMIII and Bishop to play LB. He also had 8 other LB's on this team. None of which belong in the NFL! But Thompson was a career long backup at LB. So he has to have as many LB's like him on the team.
This team needs at least 2 actual pass rushers, a Left Tackle and 2 more Offensive linemen. They also need a real NFL Running Back. Also they need a Safety. Aaron Rodgers can make up for a lot of problems, but not all of them.

thank goodness they are keeping driver.  you may be able to get younger and better at his position. but he is so consistant.  count the dropped passes against the giants, how many were drivers? he is clutch.

I know Driver is a fan favorite, but you can get younger and better at his position.
