INDIANAPOLIS -- If you thought it was impossible for NFL people to fall more in love with Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, you thought wrong. RG3 proved exactly why on Sunday, shredding the 40-yard dash and looking as fast as expected en route to running an official 4.41 40-yard dash.

Andrew Luck, not exactly known as a speedster, was perhaps more impressive with his unofficial 4.59 40 time, later changed to a 4.67 official time.

Griffin's time (both officially and unofficially) was the second-fastest by a quarterback since 2006, with only Reggie McNeal's time of 4.35 in 2006 beating him out. Russell Wilson of Wisconsin ran a 4.50 40 for the second-fastest time of the day, and Jordan Jefferson of LSU ran a 4.59.

The bump up from unofficial to official doesn't matter too much; Griffin got below 4.4 seconds on an unofficial time and that's all people around the league really need to see.

Griffin ran track at Baylor (and in high school) and his performance at the combine -- on the field, in front of the mic, wherever -- has only continued to cement his status as a lock for top-five status in the NFL draft.

It would be stunning, honestly, if RG3 fell further than the second pick. There's a strong belief that the Rams will hold an auction for the No. 2 pick and that someone will pay a hefty price to move up and grab Griffin.

Which is why folks in St. Louis should be enjoying this almost as much as teams who are chasing Griffin are.

Ok first off the PAC 12 sucks luck did not play better teams in college but when he did he lost I.e. Oregon and Ok st. (Which plays in the big 12 with baylor not the sec as you stated) and if you watched college football RG3 has been doing this since he was a freshman he went to baylor which is not a powerhouse and put them on the national stage and explain to me how luck is going to drop far enough in the draft to play for Jim harbaugh? And why are u throwing black QB names around last time I checked Tim couch sucked Ryan leaf sucked and so did david klingler oh yeah Dan Marino doesn't have a superbowl either so drop the skin card please

Why do they even bother with having QBs running the 40?  Nobody wants NFL QBs running downfield.  The only thing that matters is quickness in the pocket.  So here's what they should be testing at the combine:  10 yard dash running sideways!  THAT would have some meaning.

Andrew Luck is overrated? Actually, he has won more games than Griffin...and against better competition...that is if you subscribe to the notion that the SEC is NOT overrated.. As for the stupid comment about him not playing on a team that uses a two tight end set along with a full back for protection...I can count at least 10 teams that use such a scheme. Griffin is the overrated one because until this year you guys never ever heard of him before. Being the fastest and strongest QB does not indicate certain success in the NFL. It's about using football intelligence and proper coaching. The Raiders and 49ers have drafted many QBs that were the strongest and the fastest and look how that turned out. I'm sure Griffin is a class act, but to have him shoot up the draft board simply because of the color of his skin (the next Cam Newton) is really unfair to Griffin and to the NFL. Because as the critics like to say...if Griffin falters in his rookie season and doesn't do as well as Newton did or that Newton falters like Bradford did in his second season then the NFL will veer from drafting black QBS...no matter how fast they can run or how strong they can throw.....besides...all this running and throwing is done WITHOUT pads......let's see how they do in a real game situation....no really!

Doug Williams was neither the fastest nor the strongest but he was a very good QB. Randall Cunningham was really fast and could punt a football 90 yards and Daunte Culpepper was really strong but how many Super Bowls did they manage to play in....lest win?

Josh Johnson will be the next star QB in the NFL if Jim Harbaugh has anything to do with it. Look what he was able to do with Alex Smith in only 4 months...no really!

Guys I'm actually hoping that the NFL scouts are reading the garbage you guys are posting so they will not draft Luck. Luck will flourish wil Harbaugh as his mentor in the NFL. Will Luck do well with the Colts who have brought an old retread to run the offense? I doubt it. Luck needs to go to a team that is not a complete disaster....like the Dolphins. I can see the headlines now....."Ross fails to get Harbaugh, but manages to get his QB".

No I am not Roger Goodell but I have common sense and it tells me that Goodell will do what is best for him and the league. For the past 60 years...no one has correctly predicted the top 10 picks for each draft...no one! Why is that? Probably because after the first three picks teams get stupid and start doing things that make little sense, but brings alot of excitement. Like drafting Griffin and trading Bradford...there is a reason why the Rams are so hapless.....incompetent general management/payer acquisitions.....and poor coaching. Trade Bradford to the Colts....Manning can mentor him and still earn a big paycheck and Brafrod will be ready 2 years later like Aaron Rodgers....oh wait..Rodgers took 6 years to win a SB title.

RG3 is one hell of an athelete... However, to compare him to Brady is foolish! I don't care what your 40 is when you're throwing the football. Look at Manning. He built Lucas Oil with his arm and absolutely no speed.  Indy will never draft RG3... We believe in true pocket passers.  Not someone looking for a bailout in their legs.

Give it up already. There is no comparison betrween Luck and Griffin. What's the point? There is no evidence whatsoever that Griffin will have success as an NFL quarterback. Forty yard dash? Who gives a rat's ace? Forty six Super Bowls. Forty six winning QB's and not one could run a 4.4 forty. Brains are worth about 100 times more than athleticism (running and jumping). Haven't seen many track and field guys do well in the NFL. Obviously, running and jumping don't have squat to do with making decisions and leading a team. Ryan Tannehill may have a better career than Griffin. St. Louis are fools if they don't take Justin Blackmon.

All you people saying speed doesn't matter at the qb position, obviously don't watch football. Good speed and footwork are an essential quality for a quarterback to have, as these DE/DT's and OLB's are getting faster and faster by the minute. How many times last season did you see a quarterback drop back in the pocket only to look downfield to see everyone covered, then he looks left and finds a gigantic defensive beast breathing down his neck. Did your quarterback take the sack or did he escape, scramble and make a play? If Tom Brady had 4.41 speed I bet he'd have at least 2 more superbowl titles.

While I partially agree that the 40 yard dash is not a major indication of a QB performance on the field, we have to consider that it demonstrates how fast he can escape the pressure and run for yards. QBs are essentially passers, but are never limited to it.
