It's been a busy news day for drug arrests. Jaguars defensive tackle Nate Collins was charged with marijuana possession in Virginia, and free-agent linebacker Leroy Hill was arrested on similar charges in Atlanta, the Atlanta police department confirmed to CBSSports.com Rapid Reporter Curtis Crabtree.

The Tacoma News Tribune first reported the news.

Hill, who spent seven years with the Seahawks, was arrested along with his girlfriend after officers received a complaint of the strong smell of marijuana coming from the 17th floor of an apartment unit. Per the police report, officers obtained a search warrant after confirming the odor. After entering the premises, partially smoked "blunts" were in plain view.

Crabtree notes that "Hill was arrested in 2009 on marijuana charges after falling asleep at the wheel at an intersection in the Atlanta area."

And the News Tribune's Eric Williams writes that Hill has now been arrested three times in the last three years. Including the two incidents above, he was charged with fourth-degree assault/domestic violence in April 2010 for an incident involving his live-in girlfriend at the time.

The previous two arrests resulted in probation for misdemeanor drug possession and a settlement that led to the dismissal of the domestic-assault charges.

As for the latest run-in with authorities, Hill might not be so fortunate. He was suspended for the first game of the 2010 season for violating the league's personal-conduct policy. Now he could face a four-game ban for violating the substance-abuse policy.

"That’s not good news for Hill, a soon-to-be free agent coming off his best season in five years," Williams points out. "For the first time in his seven years in the league Hill, 29, played a full 16 games, finishing fourth on the team in tackles with 89, and second on the team with four sacks."

If they weren't already (they almost certainly were), Seattle's scouts, coaches and front-office types can add "linebacker" to the to-do list at the NFL combine.

LB Leroy Hill arrested for marijuana possession

While I'd have no problems with the legalization of marijuana, the fact remains that for now it is still illegal. That said, smoking pot is one of the easiest "crimes" to get away with. It’s so simple ~ Just be cool. Those who get loud or stupid are the ones who get busted. People who live in apartment buildings with others who may not appreciate pot use and then advertise their smelly bong sessions by failing to put a wet towel under their door are also asking for trouble. If you don’t know your neighbors, expect them to call the cops and behave accordingly.

This isn't rocket science ~ Just a few small precautions and one can easily enjoy a lifetime of pot use affecting no one but themself.  It's when it starts to affect others via noise or aroma that people get into trouble. People who want to get noisy or smelly should go out in a field somewhere. Otherwise they'll end up in the legal system like this guy and that's not cool, especially when he’s putting potentially millions of dollars on the line in future contract value.

Lifelong Seahawks fan.  With them through thick and thin.  Certainly in no position to judge anyone for enyoying their reefer (Johnny prefers skinny girls, but he'll never turn down a fattie), but this has become an established pattern for Hill.  Quick update:  the few times u get caught are NOT the only times u have blazed.  I have no problem with a co-worker of mine smoking weed, but a professional football player is a different situation.  Perhaps it is a good thing that he is a free agent this offseason.  Let him go and use the money that we would have wasted on him towards some players who appreciate the rare opportunity they have in front of them.
Hey Leroy - go join the CFL like Ricky Williams did

Amazing to see how some players put their reputation, respect and maybe careers to waste like that.

Smoking weed is ok if you can. If your job says no, you can not. Weed or your job?

Some of you people can defend this guy's smoking, but you shouldn't defend his stupidity. Plus, he must have been stinking the joint up, and I don't mean just his space. Obviously he has no regard for his neighbors by keeping the smell in his own pad. He should have sat by an open window, or blown the smoke out the bathroom or kitchen fan. And this "legal" activity is not legal at all as far as the Federal Government is concerned. I think the MJ laws are messed up too, but a person has to realize that it is against the law, and act with a little bit of intelligence. Maybe when he goes to court he can plead Stupidity. If he is this dumb, this guy deserves what's coming to him.

Toronto Phil- Please don't use the word retard. It's kind of insensitive to people who are actually mentally retarded. Go ahead, make fun of me now. I'm just trying to politely speak up for people that may not be able to stand up for themselves. Thanks. And Leroy Hill- Stop smoking weed.

natron, those neighbors are neighbors I'd like to have.  Responsible and smart.  I would've done the same thing!  He should have paid them off or at least offered soem to them to ensure silence.  Glad his stupidity continues to follow him!!

Regardless of what side of the fence you sit on re: marijuana legalization, the fact is the guy was doing something illegal.  He was treated the way any other person would be in that situation.  Instead of posting "his neighbors suck" or "he's doing it in his home, who cares" why not look at the fact that this is this retard's 3rd offence in 3 years AND he's a UFA looking for some big money!  You have to earn that by actions on and OFF the field.  Unfortnuately for him, and many others, they want the benefits of being a star without any of the responsibility.

Hey Leroy Hill- Don't be a dumb dummy.  Most fans don't care if you smoke weed. Especially in Seattle. Especially if you do your job on the field. But don't get caught, man!  With all that $$$ you're making these days, buy weed, then pay rent on your 17th floor apt, then buy a less-conspicuous car to fall asleep behind the wheel of, then pay off your neighbors and some Atlanta cops so that you can smoke in the privacy of your own home. Duh. Now get your crap together and start getting ready for next season. Peyton prolly ain't gonna go for no weed smokin, Dorito eatin, gettin busted by the police football team. Cos Peyton doesn't like Doritos. Now, go make Seattle proud. Or should I say, good luck with whatever team you end up with.
