For the past few years, the NFL's kicked off each season with a Thursday-night game featuring the previous year's Super Bowl champion. This year, though, the kickoff will be on a Wednesday, to avoid Barack Obama's scheduled speech at the Democratic National Convention, Commissioner Roger Goodell announced on Tuesday.

Latest NFL News, Notes

The specific Wednesday in question September 5, 2012 and it will feature the Giants, as expected. It'll take place on NBC, beginning at 8:30 pm ET, with an NFL Kickoff 2012 special airing at 7:30 pm ET.

Currently the Giants are scheduled to host the Saints, Buccaneers, Browns, Steelers, their NFC East division foes and ... the Packers. Green Bay, as the 2010 champion, makes the most sense as a potential opening game for the Giants.

The NFL has yet to announce that however, but made the information about the move from a Thursday to a Wednesday public early on.

So much for the idea that the NFL was more powerful than the President.

NFL kicks off Wednesday 9/5 to avoid Obama speech

This is a smart move by the NFL. They understand life is more than football. It is sad to see other comments from people who think football is everything. I am hoping these people watch and listen to the President and then they will see why the United states have the best man for the job in office. The other side messed up this economy for eight years and have done everything they could to sabotage the person who is trying to fix they mess they put us in. It is sad that people can tell you every stat about sports but don't know anything about our economy. I hear people all the time criticize this President but they do not understand how politics works. Hopefully by listening to the President speech they might begin to learn something. NFL--I applaud your move and will look forward to a great game on Wednesday.
P.S. if anybody disagree with my answer--please state it in a respectfully manner. Thanks

I would rather watch women's golf than see Obama spout off just how good "he" is and then utter the famous words from Animal House..(Kevin Bacon)...."Thank you sir.  May I have another"?    Another four years of this socialist.....I can only pray.
I concur.

Cubs vs Nationals
Yankees vs Orioles
Rangers vs Royals

These are the MLB evening games and the DVR is preset.

What kind of B.S. is this? The NFL has shown that they will shove anybody they want out of the way for their schedule. Why should it be any different here? Oh wait, anti-trust exemption....... never mind.

Who cares what the worst President in history has to say.  Would have preferred to watch the season kick off game than that idiot!  Guess I will have to find something else to watch or do!
