For the past few years, the NFL's kicked off each season with a Thursday-night game featuring the previous year's Super Bowl champion. This year, though, the kickoff will be on a Wednesday, to avoid Barack Obama's scheduled speech at the Democratic National Convention, Commissioner Roger Goodell announced on Tuesday.

Latest NFL News, Notes

The specific Wednesday in question September 5, 2012 and it will feature the Giants, as expected. It'll take place on NBC, beginning at 8:30 pm ET, with an NFL Kickoff 2012 special airing at 7:30 pm ET.

Currently the Giants are scheduled to host the Saints, Buccaneers, Browns, Steelers, their NFC East division foes and ... the Packers. Green Bay, as the 2010 champion, makes the most sense as a potential opening game for the Giants.

The NFL has yet to announce that however, but made the information about the move from a Thursday to a Wednesday public early on.

So much for the idea that the NFL was more powerful than the President.

This is about football, not whatever you no thinking morons are concerned about how the idiot you put in office 2 terms has destroyed the government of our great country.  Mark my words!  In the entirety of your wretched life, there will NEVER be another republican as president of the once great country.  God save America from the likes of you, and the morons who think like you.

NFL kicks off Wednesday 9/5 to avoid Obama speech

Alls what we heard in 2006/7/8 from Obama and the Democrats is that it's Bush's fault gas was $2.00/$3.00/$4.00, etc.  Alls what we heard in 2008 was Bush's defecit, and the Dems pounded that drum.  So what do we have?  $5.00 gas in some places, almost $4.00 everywhere else.  Obama has also TRIPLED the Bush Defecit of 2008, and it will only be worse if he is re elected.  He is a Talker, not a doer and it is so obvious.  But the NFL should make it on Friday, not Wednesday?  And shouldn't move it in the first place..

He doesn't care for NFL football, so it makes no difference to him. College football on the other hand is a differnt story.

I may not care for Obama, but to me he is more important then any NFL football game because he'll be defeated in the next Election.

You all sound so ILL-INFORMED. Ignorance is the Human Plague!  The game would've been moved regardless of party. The Networks make Ad money on the Conventions, which are pre-determined dates like a Super Bowl; years in advance  This event is not movable, its been set WELL before any NFL scheduled game has been set. The game has flexibility. If you can't get that basic television 101 concept down, your opinions are discredited automatically. Get informed before speaking like a fool.

More like Obama avoiding the NFL.  I'm sure pressure was put on the NFL to change their opener so that somebody might watch Obama. With the NFL playing, no one would have watched Obama.  Now I'll find something else to do that Thursday.

Screw Obama. People care more about Football than Politics. Let the stupid Democrats change their date.

I would like for SpreadthePanic to explain exactly what kind of "unwritten agreement" he is talking about that the NCAA has with anybody not to play football on Friday nights. Evidently, you have been on Mars during the last decade because ESPN2 has been televising a Division 1-A college football game at 7:45 EST on every Friday night during the regular season since 2004. Judging by the news content that goes on the air at NBC and MSDNC, I find if difficult to believe that Comcast is a conservative company.
