For the past few years, the NFL's kicked off each season with a Thursday-night game featuring the previous year's Super Bowl champion. This year, though, the kickoff will be on a Wednesday, to avoid Barack Obama's scheduled speech at the Democratic National Convention, Commissioner Roger Goodell announced on Tuesday.

Latest NFL News, Notes

The specific Wednesday in question September 5, 2012 and it will feature the Giants, as expected. It'll take place on NBC, beginning at 8:30 pm ET, with an NFL Kickoff 2012 special airing at 7:30 pm ET.

Currently the Giants are scheduled to host the Saints, Buccaneers, Browns, Steelers, their NFC East division foes and ... the Packers. Green Bay, as the 2010 champion, makes the most sense as a potential opening game for the Giants.

The NFL has yet to announce that however, but made the information about the move from a Thursday to a Wednesday public early on.

So much for the idea that the NFL was more powerful than the President.

It does matter.  It's not a "little thing" when the most popular show on TV shows deference to the bamsterboipos.

Right on, this Goodell is making Bud Selig look good. I propose Goodell's wife, Jane Skinner,(Ex-fox news anchor) to take over as commissioner- shes the one with the brains in that marriage.

NFL kicks off Wednesday 9/5 to avoid Obama speech

They play the weekend of Kennedy's assassination but they cant play on the same night that this moron is giving a speech. The real reason comcast, who owns NBC,moved this game is because the game would have killed the speech in the ratings and that would have made Obama look bad. Comcast, you just lost this customer - Hello,Direct TV!!!

The Democratic National Convention is a partisan event. I could see Goodell doing this if it was the SOTU address where the President is supposed to be addressing the entire country in a non-partisan way. This one smells of politics and I guess we now know which way Roger is leaning. The NFL is much more powerful than the President (at least ratings-wise), so I can only conclude that Roger is trying to guarantee his boy the largest audience possible by making this move.

NFL kicks off Wednesday 9/5 to avoid Obama speech

This is ridiculous!  I have never known any other President and Democratic National Convention which would pull such a stunt! and that is exactly what it is a "STUNT" for people to get riled up.  I am independent and I won't be watching this.  I can't believe NFL Commissioner Goodell would step aside for this action.  Why doesn't Obamba and the Democratics chose another date to avoid the Thursday opening date of a truly "AMERICAN" sport which is provided for the people by the people.  USA
