Jackson

By Josh Katzowitz

The first franchise tag has been placed, and Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson is the lucky recipient of it.

Well, lucky in as much, as he’ll make about $9.5 million for 2012, but not so lucky in that Jackson has badly wanted a long-term deal for the past two seasons. Lucky in that Jackson can begin to rebuild his reputation after a terrible end of 2011 when we wondered about his bad attitude. Unlucky in that if Jackson were to suffer a significant injury, his prospects for a big-time deal after 2012 will diminish greatly.

“We want DeSean to be an Eagle for the long haul and this is a step in the right direction to accomplish that,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said in a statement. “DeSean is a talented player and a proven playmaker in this league and we look forward to him continuing his career in Philadelphia. It’s our understanding that he has the same desire. We will continue our efforts on getting a long-term deal done with him.”

DeSean's forgettable season
Before the end of last season, the Eagles might have felt they needed to reward Jackson -- ranked No. 6 in our free agent wide receiver rankings -- with the long-term deal in order to keep him happy. After all, he had back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons in 2009-10, but his play fell off last year when he caught only four touchdown passes.

More damaging than that, though, was his attitude. He missed meetings, the Eagles benched him in the fourth quarter of the Patriots game, and teammates openly questioned his effort.

Jackson and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said all along he was a top-five receiver, but he certainly didn’t play like -- or act like -- one.

For his part, Jackson later apologized for his actions and, when asked if he was OK if the Eagles tagged him, he said “Why wouldn’t it? Hey, it’d be all right. God’s got a plan, brother. I’m going to roll with it.”

Looks like the rolling with it part begins right now.

Just so you know smith ran the 40 4.35 coming into the nfl and is just as elusive if not more. The guy runs all the routes and breaks way more tackles and carried his team for years. The whole point steve smith same size #1 wr #1 $ Desean Jackson #2 wr # 2 money.

My whole point was to say That Jackson is over hyped and in my mind not even a top 20 wide out in the leauge. Theres be other players his size with much better ball skills not to mention attitude in the nfl before this guy was even thought of. For the long time commitment id invest my money in maclin if he remains good healh wise, way better wideout

this guy is nothing like steve smith (carolina).  steve smith is a beast in a small body.  steve smith takes hits and never shy's away or alters his route because he might get taged, he runs over the middle, and he did it for year with jake delhomme as his qb and no other wide out oppiste him.  steve smnith is easily one of the most underrated Wide outs of the last 10 years.  and yeah meshawn might be faster now then steve smioth but steve smith isn't s young player anymore.

Im so sick of people saying for his size and speed theres knowone like him UMMMM theres a guy in carolina named Steve Smith who's done it for years and makes all the catches to be a legit NUM 1
Dude, I'm a Giants fan too, but Steve Smith is not a good compariosn  - I hate to say it, but DeSean is faster and more elusive than Smith. He's got an attitude problem and he takes plays off - he also shies away from contact, so he's not a top WR in my opinion -n I'd compare his skill ste more to Cruz than Carolina's Steve Smith, though.

I think DeSean Jackson has talent, but his downside is much greater than his upside in my opinion.  He's probably more valuable as a special teams guy than a wide receiver.  I think he's too small and could easily get concussed into 2015 if he were hit hard enough.  I think his effort is also a concern, he takes plays off when the play isn't designed to get him the ball.  Now, he is really fast, has the potential to break off a 90 plus yard catch and run anytime he touches the ball.  I just wouldn't invest too much in this guy, I actually like Jeremy Maclin better for the Eagles.

If i were the Eagles I would've sent him packing and went after Bowe or V Jackson. This guy cant shut his mout and is a problem ME ME ME. He doesnt go over the middle sucks in the REDZONE and has never topped 70 balls and wants A Johnson money. He's a good #2 at best he only does good against zone coverage play him man and you own him. Im so sick of people saying for his size and speed theres knowone like him UMMMM theres a guy in carolina named Steve Smith who's done it for years and makes all the catches to be a legit NUM 1.

I can't see this move as being wise either. jackson is a true playmaker with blazing speed, but hs is smallish, unable to run routes in traffic and has an attitude problem to boot.

guys that live and die on pure speed do not last long with out something else, great route running, body adjustment or just a nose for the ball, all of these things jackson just doesnt have

more importantly Philly is  leveraged about as much it can be with some huge contracts for a precious few players. this will just make it more difficult to sign or keep good players at less glamorous positions

Franchising Jackson?  Crazy!

Jackson has already made enough money playing football to get the entitled attitude and now he will get an even bigger payday because he does have talent.  Unfortunately, he doesn't use his talent unless he decides to do so, forgetting that he is being paid to do a job.

NFL GM's take notice that this is another Albert Haynesworth in the making.  Cut the strings and let him be forgotten.
