Jackson

By Josh Katzowitz

The first franchise tag has been placed, and Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson is the lucky recipient of it.

Well, lucky in as much, as he’ll make about $9.5 million for 2012, but not so lucky in that Jackson has badly wanted a long-term deal for the past two seasons. Lucky in that Jackson can begin to rebuild his reputation after a terrible end of 2011 when we wondered about his bad attitude. Unlucky in that if Jackson were to suffer a significant injury, his prospects for a big-time deal after 2012 will diminish greatly.

“We want DeSean to be an Eagle for the long haul and this is a step in the right direction to accomplish that,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said in a statement. “DeSean is a talented player and a proven playmaker in this league and we look forward to him continuing his career in Philadelphia. It’s our understanding that he has the same desire. We will continue our efforts on getting a long-term deal done with him.”

DeSean's forgettable season
Before the end of last season, the Eagles might have felt they needed to reward Jackson -- ranked No. 6 in our free agent wide receiver rankings -- with the long-term deal in order to keep him happy. After all, he had back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons in 2009-10, but his play fell off last year when he caught only four touchdown passes.

More damaging than that, though, was his attitude. He missed meetings, the Eagles benched him in the fourth quarter of the Patriots game, and teammates openly questioned his effort.

Jackson and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said all along he was a top-five receiver, but he certainly didn’t play like -- or act like -- one.

For his part, Jackson later apologized for his actions and, when asked if he was OK if the Eagles tagged him, he said “Why wouldn’t it? Hey, it’d be all right. God’s got a plan, brother. I’m going to roll with it.”

Looks like the rolling with it part begins right now.

i side with your assessment that he will only run certain routes simply because his size and injury factor. He's electric on punt returns, but can and has dropped/muffed the ball, even fumbled. That said, he draws enough attention or breaks open, there isn't anyone in the NFL that can cover him. The Eagles need to run those routes every play to open up TE & other WR's. If nothing more, can he be counted on selling that route every play ? Becuse he started to look like Randy Moss on certain plays & routes when he didn't get the ball thrown his way.

This new deal, to me, simply extends what he pulled last season. He can still leave after next season and it really depends upon what his numbers are to get a better deal there or anywhere. We saw he can do just enough too. How many play like many accused him off, then get a franchise tag. Bad attitude and anyone isn't worth having around and the better teams in the NFL have proven that. Philly never seems to get the Cruz level breakouts, so they have to go this route with Jackson. I knew the Eagles were going to franchise him this season, at the beginning of last season.

Tag him and trade him.  The guy put no effort out last year and he's going to do the same this year because he wants to stay healthy for a long term deal.  I give him and how many draft picks it takes to move up in the draft for RG3.  Sign Moss and Plax to incentive laid contracts and lets roll.
Times yours .  .  .

I'm happy that the Eagles franchised Jackson.  He may not be a Top 10 WR, but he stretches the field for WR's and TE's underneath as good as anyone in this league.  He's probably the fastest player in the NFL and his overall body of work is MUCH better than he performed last season.  I understand that he didn't play that well last season and acted immaturely, but I also understand why he was so upset about not being paid.  The Eagles went out and dropped TONS of money on FA's (Steve Smith, another WR, being one of them) but they failed to pay their own player who was WELL underpaid, despite being one of the biggest reasons the offense was so good.  I want to keep him, move forward from last season's debacle, and get back to putting loads of points on the board.  When DeSean is on the field and involved in the gameplan, the Eagles score a lot of points and usually win (if the defense doesn't play like camel $%*t).

The Eagles can't afford to lose good players and they certainly can't afford to weaken the offense with the CRAP defense that was on the field last season.  They need to concentrate on acquiring GOOD LB's and Safeties and Castillo has to have a better defensive gameplan moving forward.  He needs to be better at making adjustments and the good players they currently have on defense need to step up and play up to their potential.

Franchise him and hope somebody steps up to make a trade.  (Niners?  ...Rams?)

If not you have him for 1 year in a season where he's got everything on the line...   and the kid's gonna play his ass off ! !
You would think that he would play his butt off, but last year was the final year of his contract (his contract year), and that certainly didn't seem to motivate him. I still think it's a good move by the Philthy Eagles, since they couldn't give this loser a long-term deal. Hopefully he works hard this season, gets a bloated long term deal, and then sticks it to Philthy and their heinous fans.

Really the only move they could make with this guy since they were under the gun....

You can't let him walk for nothing.
