Report: Saints, Brees $5M apart per year on deal

GM Mickey Loomis reportely thinks Brees is a 'very good' quarterback. (Ryan Wilson, CBSSports.com/US PRESSWIRE)

By Ryan Wilson

We're 12 days away from free agency, and the Saints and franchise quarterback Drew Brees are "roughly $5 million a year apart" on a new contract, according to Yahoo.com's Jason Cole.

CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman said as much Wednesday, adding that the differences could lead New Orleans to franchise Brees. It's an odd way to treat the guy primarily responsible for saving the organization in post-Katrina New Orleans. The same guy, by the way, who is two months removed from breaking Dan Marino's single-season passing record, and two years removed from leading the Saints to a Super Bowl.

All this prompted Freeman to ask: "What the hell are the Saints doing?"

Fair question.  "I've said this before," Freeman continued. "There are certain players, only a handful, where you open the vault and roll out the cash. You give them a blank check. Brees is one of those players. Franchising Brees is going to anger him, no question. Players despise the tag because it limits their earning potential. So you've ticked off your best player. For what? Why?"

Because, in an inexplicable turn of events, the Saints, according to Cole, are "privately trying to sell itself on the notion that Brees is simply a 'very good' quarterback."

Oh my. A quick refresher: between 1967 and 2005 (the year before Brees arrived), New Orleans made the playoffs a grand total of five times. In 38 years. They've been to the postseason three times since, including one Lombardi Trophy.

Cole writes Thursday that the "very good" quarterback meme "was the word coming out of the NFL scouting combine this past week, when Saints general manager Mickey Loomis tried to define Brees as 'very good' when the quarterback was called “great,” according to three league sources. All three sources were asking Loomis why it was taking so long to sign Brees to a contract extension. Loomis’ answer spoke volumes."

Cole thinks Loomis' foot-dragging will necessitate owner Tom Benson stepping in to fix things. Fortunately, he remembers what the pre-Brees Saints were like.

“Benson knows where this team was 15 years ago and he sees where it is now. He has to make the call. Mickey is not going to do it," a league insider told Cole.

This also means that the team can't move forward with Marques Colston or Carl Nicks, two important pieces to New Orleans' high-powered offense. It's likely that Colston will hit free agency while the team will franchise Nicks (not surprisingly, he's against it), but this assumes that a Brees deal gets done before March 5 (the last day a team can use the franchise tag).

The latest news coupled with the Colston/Nicks situation prompted CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco to tweet this:

Just a thought: If Drew Brees really is Mr. New Orleans, shouldn't he get a long-term deal done so others can get signed?

Having said that, If Brees is smart he won't do it.

Whatever happens, the Saints have to sign Brees. Because without him, this team will be our early favorites for the Matt Barkley sweepstakes. (Hey, it worked for the Colts!) By the way: if Brees is "very good," what does that make backup Chase Daniel?

Report: Saints, Brees $5M apart per year on deal

How is it that the saints are making drew brees the Rodney dangerfield of football? A ring, no off field drama, the post katrina reconstructionist and a man beloved by the whole state of NO. How unsaintly could you be. In this case if you don't love someone set them free. Oh and he will come back and it will be like the return of katrina. You don't have to be and engineer, (Purdue Pun) to know that these kind of breeses don't blow through NO all the time so the saints should just hitch up to Drew and just keep on blowin' through the NFL.

Hey Ryan...I thought franchise tags had to be announced on the 5th. How do they now have 12 days to get Brees signed and then tag Nicks or Colston? Really???

uglyluggage, why you be like this, man? Are you privy to the offer? The article's implication would seem to be that Loomis is running Drew down to other teams, perhaps in order to get over on him by squeezing his nards to accept the kind of money that merely "very good" starters get. Me, I hope that somebody gives him a night tour of the bayou by small watercraft. Maybe a close personal encounter of the gator kind will make him be nice.

Dude, did Prisco deflower your little girl? His comment "If Brees is smart..." is neither "condescending" nor "patronizing." His usage is a commonly acceptable way of offering advice, at least where I come from. Absolutely nothing is implied by it that is left unsaid. Chill, until at least the next time that Prisco actually gives you good reason to exercise yourself so.

I agree with you uglylugguage, to me it's clear Brees is trying to blow up the QB market and is less concerned about winning than how much he gets paid and how he looks PR wise. How many times have we heard what a great teammate this guy is and about breaking Marino's record? Tom Brady broke the record too, had less INTs and I think more TDs, and went all the way to the SB, and has 3 SB wins out of his 5 SB appearances (geez I don't even like Brady, but I'm being honest with facts here). Brees is saying he's what, 30% better than Brady? Er...no.

Brees is a very good QB but I wouldn't rank him ahead of Brady, Rodgers, Peyton or even Eli Manning. He's in the same class as them, but 30% better than any of them?

$5,000,000? Either Brees wants to blow up the QB market or the Saints are trying to lowball him. I would think a Bradylike deal would make it happen. I really don't get it. Why try to destroy the Saints cap if you want to win SBs? What the hell can a guy do with $23,000,000 A YEAR that you can't do with $17,000,000 A YEAR! (just guessing on the numbers) I remember when the Twolves offered KG 19.5 a year and he demanded 22 a year. Really? do you guys need all that cash? I guess Mark Burnell, TO and Spreewell blew 50,000,000 plus. What and you trying to do set up the entire family? I think 10,000,000 would set up everybody I really care about and that is just the first year. I know baby's mamas are expensive but come on. Brees seems like a family guy. Your kid's kid's kids should have not probelm making it with the $$$$ you already banked. I don't know the numbers on Brees' past contracts but a 2nd round pick had to be making good money plus the deal you got to come to NO had to be big time. I am friends with Mark Clayton's dad and the kid set up the entire family and has a boat load of cash for the rest of his life. I am thinking he was picked 22 or something and he didn't even get a 2nd big deal. I guess he was smarter with his cash. I guess if you can get it, go ahead but you hurt the chances to keep other players or bringing in other key guys. QBs are the biggest cogs, ask my Skins. Brees holds the chips now so he will get tagged or get what he wants. Maybe the Saints fans should occupy the Garden District or the Superdome until they get it together.
