In a move that doesn’t surprise, Atlanta general manager Thomas Dimitroff announced Friday morning that the team will place its franchise tag on cornerback Brent Grimes.

Grimes has become one of the better defensive backs in the NFC South, and though he missed four games last year because of a knee injury, he’s started the last 28 games in which he’s played. After a standout 2010, when he made 87 tackles, five interceptions and 23 passes defensed (in a reserve role, he actually had six interceptions in 2009), his numbers decreased last year -- he recorded 49 tackles, one pick and 14 defended passes.

Grimes -- No. 2 on our list of free agent cornerbacks -- also will turn 29 before next season, so there might be some concern in the organization about giving him a long-term deal after a so-so 2011. Especially since the Falcons signed Dunta Robinson to a six-year contract worth $57 million in March 2010.

With the tag, Grimes should expect to make about $10.6 million next season. If he signs it, that is. Which, according to his agent, he's not wanting to do at this point.

“We have no plans to sign the tag at this time,” Ben Dogra told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “We hop[e] to be able to continue to disscuss through all the issues at the appropriate time.”

If he doesn't want the 10.6 mil then let him walk. He is coming off knee surgury and he's 29. If someone else wants to sign him for 5-6 years by all means please do. As far as getting a young corner to groom i would rather get some 0-line and d-line help and let Grimes play this year and see what happens next year.

I agree with B_Lake, I would also like to get a young corner to groom at a cheap price, and I honestly wouldn't pay $10.6 Million for Grimes. I do like Brent Grimes however, and this year will really let us know if he is a long term answer. As much as I dislike paying him $10.6 Million. I would hate it more if the Falcons gave him a $40 Million / 5 year deal or $48 Million / 6 year deal. So while I am definitely not crazy about giving him $10.6 Million this year. I would rather overpay this year and see if he is truly worth a long-term extension, or whether we should just let him go.

Im sure Jerry Jones and the Cowgirls would love to have had him. He is the second ranked free agent CB.
Those rankings mean nothing...

I've seen Brent Grimes get beat enough to know that he's not worth $10.6M for a year, but I recognize that was the Falcon's best option in this situation since he's their best option at corner...Still, $10.6M?

No, I would not want to waste $7-8M/year (prob what he would have gotten in free agency) for a guy that probably gets beat just as much as the Cowboys corners do...I'd rather have a young guy to groom at a quarter of the cost...

His agent say that he wont sign it. Good, sit out then. the TAG is 2 1/2 times what he is worth anyway. Pull the tag, let him walk and sign a FA DE. It does not matter who is in coverage if you give ANY NFL QB all day to throw. Since the Falcons had NO coverage sacks, it is apparent that their real need is aDE that can pressure the QB. You put pressure on the QB and that makes an Average DB a good DB. Plus, combine the 10.6M CAP hit with Dunta's and that is almost 1/6 of the entire team CAP. Makes no sense to give a raise to the same guys who couldnt get off the field on 3rd down last year. New blood is needed. Let someone else take the chance on Grimes. He might be the 4th best corner in philadelphia, hardly TOP 5 money warrented for him.

We need to sign Lofton now. Don't over pay for him but i would like him back. Sounds like Beirmann will be back for 3-4 years. I would love to pick up Nicks from the Aints and sure up our O-line. If Abe isn't going to come down on his asking price we need to find a replacement asap. Would like to get them in and get the system down.
