Report: NFL will investigate 'Skins for bounty

By Josh Katzowitz

Former Redskins coach Joe Gibbs says he didn’t know his defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, might have put together a bounty program in Washington before he did the same thing with the Saints, but it sounds like the NFL now will look into what transpired in Washington during Williams’ time there.

That’s what the Washington Post is reporting, citing an anonymous source who says it is standard for the league to investigate accusations that rules have been broken.

New Orleans' forgettable offseason

At this point, it seems fairly clear that there was a bounty program in Washington, especially if you read former Redskins player Matt Bowen’s piece today in the Chicago Tribune in which he writes:

“That's right. We got paid for big hits, clean hits by the rule book. … Money jumped in the playoffs. A bigger stage equaled more coin. Instead of a few hundred dollars, now you got a thousand, maybe more, depending on the player. That's the truth. I can't sugarcoat this. It was a system we all bought into.”

Gibbs told the Post on Friday, “In my life … I wouldn’t ever tell a player to hurt somebody.

“They may say, ‘Well, Joe would know, because everybody else knew.’ But I didn’t know. I’m shocked by this.”

With the NFL investigating, we should have a better idea of who know what and when they knew it.

So it's entirely possible, that this bounty program Williams employed, could have directly lead to Sean Taylor's death? Maybe he got hurt going all out on a play, which lead to the chain of events that ended his life. We'll never truly know, but one thing is certain, Greg Williams should recieve a lifetime ban from the NFL.

Maybe I'm a bit ignorant, but surely if Gibbs didn't know, then someone higher up had to, as somebody had to actually sanction the payments; i.e, the GM, etc.  Unless Williams was paying for these out of his own pocket (which I doubt).

Fine, investigate the Skins, but if Goodell is going that far back he needs to investigate the Titans & Bills (before Skins) & Jacksonville (after Skins). How far will Goodell go ? How many of the teams Greg Williams has been involved with ? Goodell is sliding down a very slippery slope. Even punishing the Saints organization can breed inconsistency. Maybe Goodell should just focus on Greg Wiliams. If he doesn't let the flood gates open for the Titans, Bills, Skins, Jaguars, Saints & whoever, or whatever defensive coordinator, head coach, GM, or owner ever had "any" variation of "any type" of bounty system in the last year ? five years ? ten years ? Where does it start? where does it stop?

During Gibbs 2 in Washington it's highly likely that Joe did not know what was going on with Williams. Sadly it was evident by Gibbs' (and I love the guy) onfield performance as a coach that the game had passed him by after 10 years of absence. But hey, Snyder waived waved 5 million a year fro 5 years under his nose. Gibbs was the head coach but he let the assistants run the team.

Report: NFL will investigate 'Skins for bounty

Does the special investigating unit of the NFL have a clue.  Wouodn't be wise to look into all the organizations Williams coached for ... before going public.  Read the posts... do you not think that the Skins, Bills and Titans are going to freely give information knowing how the League and public might react.  There are already calls for heads to roll and big fines witht he Saints.  Do you honestly think that any investigation in Buf, Was and Ten will be effective now that the organizations are prepared?

At this point any smart owner, GM, head coach has already sent out a team wide email saying that if anything like this is going on it better be stopped ASAP. I'd even go so far as to have all team staff and players sign some sort of document saying that they understand this type of behaviour is against team and NFL policy.

The NFL is probably gonna be doing a league wide investigation anyway. So, a team that knows they've done this might be smart to just turn themselves in and hope it buys them some leniency.

Football is a violent sport. People do like to see hard hits, and they are part of that game. That does not mean the hit was an intent to injure. It is usually an attempt to seperate man from ball. "Bounty" hits are often after the whistle or aimed at the legs or neck (i.e. head). These are not the hits that initiate oohs and ahs. These are often the hits that cause the announcer to say "meanwhile we have a player down back at the.."

Certainly it is unnecessary to allow players to attempt to injure and maim other players, and certainly the league should do something to end it. Just because it has been going on doesn't mean it must continue. The league must stop what it can or all you'll be left with is RollerBall.

Hope they find out the Rams knew about this and were excited about implementing their new bounty system and take away their #1 pick.
