At one point in time, it seemed like the Patriots might let wideout Wes Welker test the free-agency market. When it seemed like the market for Welker's services would be busy, that tone changed and according to our Patriots Rapid Reporter Greg A. Bedard, the Pats have officially decided to place the franchise tag on Welker.

Earlier on Monday, Bedard reported that Welker would receive the tag some time around Monday afternoon, so the news that Welker's been hit with the tag isn't a huge surprise.

"Wes Welker is a remarkable football player for our team and has been a vital component to our offense and special teams since we traded for him in 2007," the Patriots said in a statement released by the team. "Utilizing the franchise designation allows both sides more time to try to reach an agreement, which is the goal. Wes remains a contractual priority and we are hopeful that he will remain a Patriot for years to come."

The only issue for New England will be whether or not Welker's willing to sign his tender and play for a one-year contract that guarantees him $9.4 million.

As we've previously noted, Welker would very much like to receive longer deal that pays him in the same range as the other top wideouts in the NFL. Bedard points out that "both sides would prefer a multi-year contract."

The issue is whether or not the Patriots are willing to give Welker, who will turn 31-years-old in May, a deal that will carry him past the age of 35.

come 1 dropped pass away from a Super Bowl win.

I really wish you Pats fans would drop that line.  Catching that pass would have guaranteed nothing.  The Pats lost to the better team that day, just like in 2008.

It makes as much sense for you to say "Well, we were one defensive drive away from a Super Bowl win", before Eli and the Giants offense shredded your defense to go up by 4.

Just give it up, give the Giants their due credit, and move on.   You still can't do that for 2008, insisting on blathering on about magical helmets.

One more thing ...

The past 2 seasons for NE were supposed to be rebuilding years ...

All we did was go 27-5 (reg season) and come 1 dropped pass away from a Super Bowl win.

Now this year, we will certainly add a speed guy (Mike Wallace?) and improve the defense/pass rush with no major losses of core players.

Smart money's on NE and certainly not NYG.

Granted the Giants won those 3 games:

1) The first one required every miracle in the history of miracles to squeak by.
2) This year's regular seaon win was solid. Solid but still VERY close.
3) Brady and Welker connect on what should have been an easy pitch and catch, and game over. Patriots win.

Again, no shoulda's and woulda's here ... but having their number and all over in Pats land? I don't know about that one.

The Giants are a middle of the road team (maybe a WHISKER above average) that gets streaky.

I actually give the Giants alot of credit for their recent stretch runs.

But you're getting a little ahead of yourself when you say things like owning them, having their number, it's all over, etc.

That's just childish silly talk.

You could argue that Welkers first half performance last year was one of the best in the history of football. In the second half teams had to focus on limiting his touches and that's when you saw the momentum shift to the TE's. He's a game changer and its just due to the fact that he's a 6 foot 180 lbs white guy that everyone still doubts his abilities. Keep hating

Jdspliff-you sir are a fool. Droppy mcdropperson? Really? The guy drops one pass and you call him that? It was not an easy catch, yes he should have had it but it wasnt a good pass by Brady's standards. Welker has normally been extremely sure-handed and just and just a little FYI. No player is perfect. For those saying he is a product of the Pats system, thats false. Yes their system is perfect for him but he was starting to emerge in Miami right as they traded for him and that was a lousy team. I for one am a bit worried, I see a possible hold-out here and the Pats do need this guy. We will see what happens, I just could not believe the uninformed posts here. Wow,

I am not sure why everyone is all over him about that drop.  It wasn't the best pass thrown by Brady.  I guess Brady can do no wrong.  I know it is Welker's job to catch the ball, but it is Brady's job to get it to him.  In my opinion, they are both equally blamed.

Maybe a longer better contract would've happened if he hadn't choked in the Super Bowl.  He's the dink in the dink and dunk style of Ms. Brady.  Where's the long catch when  you need it?? Big Blue shut him and Brady down for the third straight time.....We have their number!! It's all over in Patsy Land......get used to it!!!!!
