The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on wide receiver Dwayne Bowe on Monday afternoon, the team announced.

"Today was the league’s deadline to designate a franchise player and we felt it was in the best interest of the Kansas City Chiefs to place the tag on Dwayne," Chiefs GM Scott Pioli said in a statement released by the team.

Bowe was one of many top-flight wide receivers who could hit free agency; that group has dwindled significantly over the past few days with franchise tags applied and new contracts signed.

The Chiefs top pass-catcher the past few years, Bowe seemed like a lock to receive the franchise designation once KC signed free-agent cornerback Stanford Routt. This likely means that cornerback Brandon Carr is headed for a big payday in free agency if he doesn't sign a long-term deal with the Chiefs.

Pioli has shown a willingness to keep young, talented players. It was Carl Peterson that sent Jared Allen to Minnesota. Robert Griffin III absolutely looked good at Baylor, but keep in mind that Ryan Leaf looked AWESOME at Washington State. QBs that go #2 overall are rare, and, outside of McNabb, are largely busts. And, on a side rant, why is it that every time there is a QB that is a clear #1 overall, these QBs that few outside of their conference considered to be world-beaters suddenly show up as possibly supplanting the favorite? It's ludicrous. Other than Tim Couch vs. McNabb, it's never even been close. It's almost like people that get paid to write articles and talk into a microphone are TRYING to create a race that's not really there, but we all know that can't be the case... Same thing here, RGIII is NOT better than Andrew Luck. Period. Pretty sure Pioli is looking at team needs and understands that there are better ways to challenge his starting QB than to send his best receiver to another team just to draft another QB. Further food for thought: Last QB the Chiefs drafted in the first round was Todd Blackledge in 1983... 30 years is a long time to be gun-shy, but when you take the one QB from the class of '83 that was a bust, maybe it's understandable. Gonna be O-Line. Not sexy, but the last bit of sustained success with the Chiefs can be traced directly back to the Offensive line (including Pro-Bowlers Shields, Roaf and Watters). Just need some O-Line draftees to actually pan out. Now, if this BS report about them going after Manning turns out to be true, that's a whole ‘nother story. He actually IS Andrew Luck (with more injuries, for sure, but also a wealth of experience you don't get in the Pac-12 and 4 MVPs). Just sayin’...

Bowe has to get more consistent to be a true number 1 receiver, but he is good and has elite talent. Breaston is the next best on the team. If he were to become the #1 target and get double-teamed, I doubt Cassell or Orton could complete even 50% of their passes. Carr is good, but he's not even our best corner. Next year we get Charles and Berry back to solidify offense and defense. Should be good enough for the playoffs in a weak division.

I know some will be mad that they didn't tag Brandon Carr instead but having all of that money tied up in the secondary would have given the team a 6 million dollar nickel CB and not enough money to fill other needs. I actually also don't think the WR market is as strong as it looks. All of these players are stars on paper but Colston has been an injury bug for years and V Jackson has had Rivers throwing the ball to him and no running game in SD to compliment things. With Bowe you could at least argue that he was good even when Jamal Charles was healthy.

I believe this was an over reaction to what is going on with the WR market. Pioli must have been worried that in this game of musical chairs he was going to be left without a place to sit. I guess the FA market will be nice and strong for Vincent Jackson, Coulston and others. The question remains can Bowe and the Chiefs actually come to a reasonable long term deal.... $10.6 Million for 2012 is way to rich.... Buddy Nix and the Bills must feel good about themselves getting Johnson for just over $7 Million per year.
