Bears, Bills interested in Vincent Jackson?

The Chargers may have stated repeatedly that they want wide receiver Vincent Jackson back in San Diego next season, but he's set to hit the open market. And when he does, there will almost certainly be a team (or three) willing to pay him more than what Chargers GM A.J. Smith deems fair.  Unsurprisingly, Smith understands this: "We would like to have him continue on with us, but other teams now will enter the picture."

The Chicago Tribune's Vaughn McClure writes that the Bears could be one of the teams interested in Jackson's services.

At least Bears can pursue Vincent Jackson, who didn't get tagged. Jackson and Cliff Avril appeared to be the top two free agent targets.

Obviously, McClure sent the tweet before the Lions tagged Cliff Avril. Either way, Jackson's still available and ESPN's John Clayton echoes McClure, tweeting that he thinks "the Bears will make a big run at Vincent Jackson."

It's a perfectly reasonable assumption; running back Matt Forte was the team's leading receiver last season (52 catches, 490 yards, 1 TD), followed by Johnny Knox (37, 727, 2) and Roy Williams (37, 507, 2). But the NFL is a passing league and that means that the supply of franchise quarterbacks and big-play wideouts will always outstrip demand. So Chicago should expect competition for Jackson.

According to the Union-Tribune, the Bills could be one such team even though, you know, they just signed Stevie Johnson to a long-term deal. Details via Kevin Acee:

"It is believed the Buffalo Bills remain interested in Jackson despite signing Stevie Johnson to a five-year, $36.25 million deal on Monday. And, at least theoretically, Jackson was helped when Dwayne Bowe received the franchise tag from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Acee adds that despite Jackson's turbulent relationship with the Chargers' front office, Jackson's heart is in San Diego. "According to those familiar with his thinking, he has compartmentalized his feelings about the team and wants to remain a part of the offense led by Philip Rivers and devised by Norv Turner. He would, according to sources, take less from the Chargers than another team, though not a whole lot less."

Acee suspects that San Diego has a number in mind for Jackson, something less than $11 million a year. But if the two sides can't come to an agreement before March 13 at 4 p.m. ET, there's a good chance Jackson will have played his last game for the Chargers.

Bears, Bills interested in Vincent Jackson?

Guy cites ONE PLAY and calls him classless, clueless and gutless. All you need to REALLY know about VJ is 60 catches, 1100 yards and 10 TDs. The guy is a playmaking WR w/ a semi-elite QB in a pass driven league. Keep him.

Bears, Bills interested in Vincent Jackson?

As a Packers fan, despite how much I hate the idea, I think VJax to Chicago makes sense. VJax has torched the Packers everytime he's been in the Bolts starting lineup, and MN/DET don't have man DBs that can cover him. Assuming they fix their other problems, the addition of VJax alone might make the Bears tough to beat in the NFC north.

V-Jack in Chicage would be interesting.  It sure would open up the running game for the Bears.  I really think someone has a shot at V-Jack because of his experience in the past with the Chargers.  Dont get me wrong...he has a good connection with Rivers and they work good tegether.  But I am thinking the Chargers will either fess up the cash or he will be GONE!  Remember, he held out most of a year because of his unhappiness with his contract!

He would also be a nice fit for the Seahawks...who have tried to get him when he was holding out!  The only thing Seattle needs is a QB that has a strong arm and can open things up.  Lynch would even be more effective, as would the entire receiver corp!  As a Seahawk fan...we can only hope they bring someone in that can sendT-Jax to the bench or out of Seattle.  The Hawks are going NOWHERE with him.

V-Jack could fit in about anywhere and he is going to get some high dollars from the team who signs him.

I would like them to sign Colston and give up their 19th pick for Wallace. If your gonna use your 19th pick on a WR, then use it on Wallace.

I'd much rather they sign Colston or Meachum even though V. Jax would make an excellent target for Jay.

@Bearish  Good post!  What is it about the Bears that they can't draft or sign a good free agent WR? Should they take a chance on Mario Williams?

Bears, Bills interested in Vincent Jackson?

The Bears are an AVERAGE football team right now. Four of the last five years they have finished within one game of .500 - and that is average. Every team in the NFL with a similar record is a couple of playmakers away from greatness. Every one of those teams had a four or five game winning streak that excited their fans, and every one of those teams was just a couple of turnovers away from the playoffs. That's todays NFL. And every one of those teams is in a similar draft position and will add similarly ranked draftees. The difference makers are the free agents! You build a foundation through the draft, but you raise yourself to the next level with key free agent signings. That said, very few wide receivers transition from one team to another and improve. Wide receivers, more than any position, are a product of their system and their QB and OC. A guy like Randy Moss can look great in one system and out-of-place in another. TJ, Ocho, TO, and on, and on. There are tons of these guys that did not transition well. So, I'd love to see the Bears bring in a stud or two in free agency - but I'd rather see them draft a wideout and bring in a shut down corner, or pass rusher, or left tackle as a free agent signing.
