Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts are breaking up, and they’ll make it official at a news conference Wednesday,'s Mike Freeman has confirmed.

The news was first reported by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

The decision isn’t a surprise, considering Indianapolis was highly unlikely to pay Manning his $28 million bonus when so much about the health of his neck is unknown.

Thus ends a 14-year partnership when Manning took over a moribund Colts squad and helped develop the franchise into one of the best in the NFL.

Sources tell Mortensen that Manning -- who will be in attendance at the presser along with owner Jim Irsay -- will try to continue his career.

But this day was due to come. No matter how much love is shared by Irsay and Manning -- and despite their pissing contest this offseason, the two have had a strong relationship during their time together -- the Colts couldn’t continue on with a Manning-sized quarterback question. It's all but certain that Indianapolis will take Andrew Luck with the No. 1 pick in the draft, and though a Luck apprenticeship under Manning would have been fine for a year or two (even Luck said he’d be cool with it), it wouldn’t have helped the organization if Manning decided he wants to play another half-decade.

Latest news at Peyton's place

And what of Manning’s health? A workout video of what appeared to be Manning was leaked last weekend, and Manning -- if it really was him -- appeared to be in fine form. But remember, a report a few weeks ago said that Manning actually had a fourth neck procedure and that he might need another spinal fusion.

The spin emanating from both sides was almost comparable to the current Presidential race. You didn’t know what to believe.
Well, we can believe this: we have seen the last of Manning in a Colts uniform.

Which leads us to this question: Where does he go from here? The Dolphins seem to be a front-runner, because of the supposed Manning infatuation of owner Stephen Ross. As do the Cardinals, who could be willing to end the one-year Kevin Kolb experiment, and the Redskins -- who are always willing to try to become the offseason champion. The Chiefs and the Jets also could be in play, especially considering Romeo Crennel and Rex Ryan haven’t given their respective quarterbacks huge endorsements.

Also, this is bad news for Matt Flynn, who automatically becomes less interesting to the league when Manning hits the market. And depending on when Manning signs with another team -- which, if he’s released, he could do immediately, as opposed to waiting until free agency begins March 13 -- he could have an effect on the teams that might be interested in trading with the Rams for the right to draft Robert Griffin III.

Though we seemingly know the outcome to the Manning-Colts marriage, there are still plenty of questions to be answered in the weeks to come.

Colts, Manning will part ways Wednesday

Call me the minority, but us fans of the NFL and most posters of this thread knew this was coming. I'm pretty sure this is hard on Jim Irsay and the Colts to make this business decision. I'm sure in hell wouldn't want to be in his position and getting second-guessed. It's damn if you do and damn if you don't. Peyton Manning, with class and dignity, hopefully knows this not personal. I wish nothing but best the best for Peyton Manning whether he plays for another team or options for retirement. Your a class act all the way!

Excellent decision, although unpopular.  There is no garuntee that this guy will ever play another down again, let alone be even half the player he used to be if he does come back.  Way too big a gamble to build your franchise's future around.  There is no garuntee that Manning isn't going to "JeMarcus" whatever team rolls the dice on getting him.  That said, he might be just as legendary when he comes back and it will be good luck to whoever gambles on that outcome, but I wouldn't bet my franchise's future on it.

If Luck does not pan out as the future quarterback of the Colts what do the team do this year as well as next year? Back to square one one one!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah get a broken down has been that was cut from another team. Piss poor prior planning on the part of the Colts.

They have no lost whatever bonus they gave Luck and would have to pay this has been quarter back around 5-10 million. Opps it appears as if we are back to near the $28 million we are trying to avoid paying the man we all need and want at the helm.
Okay, but say they gave Manning the $35.5 million ($28million bonus and salary of $7.5 million) and, as you suggested, Luck refuses to sign and renters the draft, and then you find Manning can't play?  The doctors have cleared him to try, that does not guarantee that Manning returns to his pre-surgery form. Now you don't have the supposed "QB of the future" in Luck and Manning is gone too, along with $35.5million that could have been used to fill other holes on the roster (Luck will cost only a fraction of that amount with the new rookie wage scale), on top of the $26million you paid Manning not to play last year.

Best case scenario, Manning has a few good years left --every QB gets older, skills diminish but you're paying him as an "elite" QB, taking up a large chunk of the salary cap on a team with more needs.  Worst case, you pass on Luck, committ the money to Manning, Manning's arm strength does not come back and you're back to Curtis Painter at QB and hoping to find a QB in the 2013 draft or 2014, 2015 etc.

The only way the Colts, imo, could have brought Manning back is if Manning had been willing to restructure his contract to far less guaranteed money, with maybe a ton of perfomance incentives or something.  As great as Manning has been, $35.5million is just too much money for someone you are not even sure will be able to play.

Looks like Jimmy is becoming Robert as the years go by.  Soon the drinking begins, then the slurring, then the fist pounding, then the relocation.   GO IRSAY!  No respect for Unitas, and none for Manning.

If the San Francisco 49ers are serious about going to the Super Bowl this coming season, then they should go after Peyton Manning.

Harbaugh has bad blood against Manning because Manning came and took his job in Indianapolis. We all know how small minded Harbaugh is based on his behaviour against Pete Carroll in college and his behaviour against Swartz in the regular season last year.

But if your the owner of the 49ers, you should tell Harbaugh to ,"Shut up and get over it!" and get Manning in there.

Let's do the math shall we?

Peyton Manning's a free agent..... Alex Smith is a free agent. iF your the 49ers, Who do you sign for a team that's bilt to win RIGHT NOW?
