Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts are breaking up, and they’ll make it official at a news conference Wednesday,'s Mike Freeman has confirmed.

The news was first reported by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

The decision isn’t a surprise, considering Indianapolis was highly unlikely to pay Manning his $28 million bonus when so much about the health of his neck is unknown.

Thus ends a 14-year partnership when Manning took over a moribund Colts squad and helped develop the franchise into one of the best in the NFL.

Sources tell Mortensen that Manning -- who will be in attendance at the presser along with owner Jim Irsay -- will try to continue his career.

But this day was due to come. No matter how much love is shared by Irsay and Manning -- and despite their pissing contest this offseason, the two have had a strong relationship during their time together -- the Colts couldn’t continue on with a Manning-sized quarterback question. It's all but certain that Indianapolis will take Andrew Luck with the No. 1 pick in the draft, and though a Luck apprenticeship under Manning would have been fine for a year or two (even Luck said he’d be cool with it), it wouldn’t have helped the organization if Manning decided he wants to play another half-decade.

Latest news at Peyton's place

And what of Manning’s health? A workout video of what appeared to be Manning was leaked last weekend, and Manning -- if it really was him -- appeared to be in fine form. But remember, a report a few weeks ago said that Manning actually had a fourth neck procedure and that he might need another spinal fusion.

The spin emanating from both sides was almost comparable to the current Presidential race. You didn’t know what to believe.
Well, we can believe this: we have seen the last of Manning in a Colts uniform.

Which leads us to this question: Where does he go from here? The Dolphins seem to be a front-runner, because of the supposed Manning infatuation of owner Stephen Ross. As do the Cardinals, who could be willing to end the one-year Kevin Kolb experiment, and the Redskins -- who are always willing to try to become the offseason champion. The Chiefs and the Jets also could be in play, especially considering Romeo Crennel and Rex Ryan haven’t given their respective quarterbacks huge endorsements.

Also, this is bad news for Matt Flynn, who automatically becomes less interesting to the league when Manning hits the market. And depending on when Manning signs with another team -- which, if he’s released, he could do immediately, as opposed to waiting until free agency begins March 13 -- he could have an effect on the teams that might be interested in trading with the Rams for the right to draft Robert Griffin III.

Though we seemingly know the outcome to the Manning-Colts marriage, there are still plenty of questions to be answered in the weeks to come.

I hope the Eagles take a shot at him. They will never win anything with Michael Vick.

The Ravens a good fit? Sounds like and old Baltimore Colts fan still looking for a little pay back.  I guess it is a slow burn. As a Bills can the only thing I can tell you is to find another kicker. It still hurts, do let him do it to you again. Nothing worse than losing a big game because of a kicker. I remember a guy costing us, but it from 47 yards, I don't care. He missed it, and it cost me plenty. Now you guys got the same problem.  Maybe if cleaned up VanderJack, Payton would unite with his old buddy.

I think Payton is big City bound, Redskins or Jets.

I think that Manning would be a great fit or the Ravens. They have a great running game which would help big time. Very good receivers & if Manning gets his deep pass back could you imagine those passes to the fastest man in football Tory Smith. Descent O-line which is good enough to give Manning time to pass but its not like he needs the time when he gets rid of the ball fast. A very good defense which Manning has never had.

Even if Manning is only 80% of what he was could very well put the Ravens over the top & get them a Superbowl with as much talent on that team. An 80% Manning (over Flacco) on the Ravens this past season would have beat the Pats in the AFC championship & went to the Superbowl & possibly won.

The way I see it, Peyton Manning carried dead weight for nearly his whole (Colts) career.  He dragged the rest of the teams' sorry butts where it had no business being otherwise.  As evidence by their horrible season without him.

Why the disrespect the President of the U.S.?  CBS you just lost major points for a low class move and "you are on notice."
what!!!!??? first off, how did they disrespect the President???? Second, how are they "on notice" from who?? you?? they didnt say one thing about the president, more like the presidental race.
Also, my track record continues as I told many already Manning was toast.  I stay five steps ahead of CBS on a constant basis.
i dont think he's toast, if you meant he was toast in Indy, then you werent the only one who was five steps ahead, i thought he was a goner since they had the 1st pick. i think Manning will go somewhere and be really good, great, i dont know, we'll see on that one, but i expect him to play well next year if healthy, THAT's my worry, health and i think he will be ok enough to last another 2 years, maybe 3.

As for the teams, i only see 2 teams that he could end up in and then the others are outside looking in. the outside looking in teams are Cleveland, Washington (he's not going to want to put his family in that drama), NY Jets and Seattle. the teams i see him deciding between are Arizona and Miami. Arizona is in a dome, they have Fitzgerald, they MAY need a QB and i could see them signing Wayne and/or Garcon to go with Manning, plus, if they sign him, they cut Kolb, re-sign Skelton, have him learn from the great Manning. i also like Miami because in Miami, he has Marshall, Bush, plus i see Wayne or Garcon going there with him and then drafting a young qb and then getting much more improved on offense.

Well, I guess most of us saw that coming. That PR stunt conducted by Irsay, when he basically said "we would love to have Peyton back if he wants" was one of the most lamest things I've ever witnessed. A deal-breaker and the beginning of the end. At this point, nothing much left to say but good luck to the Colts organization in their rebuilding process and good luck to Peyton Manning. I miss him playing and hope to see him back - now with another team - in 2012.

Jerry Rice in a Raider uniform?
naaah the raiders played the role of NFL retirement home pretty well so as weird as it was to see Rice anywhere other than San Francisco his Oakland stint pales in weirdness to him as a Seahawk...and wearing Largent's number no less

I guess you could throw in Favre as a Jet/Viking
Cris Carter as a Dolphin
Bruce Smith as a Redskin

Jim Irsay sure seems to be a Liar at this point. If Peyton was willing to restructure the cotract, this could go down as the biggest mistake in history.
Luck better be the hero people thinks he is or this is going to be a hard couple years for Diehard Colts Fans. In either case, this is a very dark day. If the packers could make it work with Favre and Rodgers, theres no reason the $28Mil couldn't have been spread over three years, train Luck along the way and then retire as a new OB Coach for the Colts. As a Peyton Manning fan as well, I wish him all the best!
