Baalke: 49ers aren't going after Manning

By Josh Katzowitz

While teams apparently are jumping into what should be an expensive sweepstakes to win the affections of Peyton Manning -- the Dolphins, the Redskins, the Jets, the Cardinals, etc. -- at least one potential landing place won’t be accepting Manning’s job application.

Latest news at Peyton's place
That is the 49ers, who apparently are content to re-sign Alex Smith rather than test the waters with Manning. That’s what San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke told KNBR radio (via the Sacramento Bee), saying, “We haven't had Peyton in here nor are we even talking about those things internally right now. ... Is he going to play? I don't know. That's for the doctors to make the decision on and for him himself."

Meanwhile, San Francisco is still trying to sign Smith, an unrestricted free agent who seemingly has coach Jim Harbaugh in his corner.

"We're working very hard on it like we are with all our free agents. I said this all along and I hate to be a broken record, but Alex is an important part of it,” Baalke said. “Carlos (Rogers) is an important part of it. All of these guys that were here last year, that are out there, that are free agents, we're trying our best to put the best package that we can together to keep as many of them as we can."

Maybe, though, the 49ers should take a look at Manning. As CBSSports.com’s Will Brinson recently pointed out, “If any team is ‘one guy away,’ it's the 49ers. And that's why you can't count them out.” Because who would you rather have: Smith or Manning (even if it’s a Manning that’s not 100 percent healthy)?

Baalke: 49ers aren't going after Manning

Hey bro,

I am a die-hard Niner fan all my life (36 years old). Was born and raised going to candlestick for games and could not agree with you more. How can we NOT go after him? Or at least inquire? Pretty sure we win it all last year if he was our QB. I am baffled by them thinking Alex Smith is the guy. Decent year last year but he terrifies me at the end of games. Think second to last drive in Detroit game where ball was picked off and NO Niner receivers anywhere near him. Crazy.

49er management, that is why this franchise has been at the bottom of the division for the past 15 years.

IN 2112, PEYTON WINS!!

I'm going to predict, with a fair degree of confidence, that Peyton Manning will be retired before 2112.

Baalke: 49ers aren't going after Manning

As a DIE HARD 49er fan for the last 25 years, I can say that this just sucks.  Listen, Alex Smith didn't lose them the game against the Giants, but he really didn't do much of ANYTHING good consistantly last year.  Minimum INT's?  SURE - How many pass attempts and how many TD's??  It's all relevant.  We have a GREAT DEFENSE, a AWESOME HEAD COACH, and the best special teams in the NFL.  The Running game as a whole is solid.  Anyone who can honestly say they are confident with Alex (a nice guy, for sure) as their starting QB should have their head examined.  Now the coaching staff HAS TO SAY THAT, or they wouldnt be doing their job, but come on people.  The guy simply is not the answer.  We will not win a super bowl with him at the reigns, it's as simple as that.  There are very few times when a team has everything fall into place despite having an average, or below average QB at the helm (see Dilfer/Ravens).  Our year was last year.  It ISNT going to happen again with Alex throwing 30% of his passes in the dirt.  You REALLY wouldn't rather have PEYTON???  COME ON BAALKE!!!

Smith wasn't the reason the Niners did not beat NY. He had no chance o make the comeback drive after the two rookie fumbles. Why screw with an overall winning formula? Get the wideouts and work with Smith to expand his playbook

Baalke: 49ers aren't going after Manning

If the 49ers think they are going to win a Super Bowl with Alex Smith they are crazy. If they don't go after Manning then they won't win a Super Bowl anytime soon.  The least they can do is go after a top free agent wide reciever like Mike Wallace which is what I think they have in plan.

Maybe Harbaugh has a problem coaching the guy that ended HIS carrer in Indy.  Remember the QB in Indy from 94 till 97 was Harbaugh.  He was one blown call away from going to the superbowl in 95.  Without all the hype you see today with Peyton, Captain Comback was dumped without any look back in 97/98.

HOWS THIS ANGLE........????????

(INSIDE THE MIND OF PEYTON MANNING))))))))))))

IN 2006, PEYTON WINS.
IN 2007, ELI WINS.

IN 2011, ELI WINS.

IN 2112, PEYTON WINS!!

I WILL BE THE FIRST ONLINE TO PLACE MY SUPERBOWL FUTURES BET ON THE TEAM THAT MAKES THE MOVE BECAUSE, LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER, IT WILL BE A CALCULATED DECISION.

Trent Baalke, kill yourself.  What have you ever really accomplished??  Who are you anyway??

TRENT BAALKE, I HOPE YOU READ THIS...  IF YOU INDEED DID MAKE THIS STATEMENT, YOU MADE A PREMATURE DECISION BY SAYING THAT YOU ARE DISINTERESTED.  HOW SOON WE HAVE FORGOTTEN THAT ALEX SMITH HAD ONE 'GOOD' SEASON VICE 6 BAD ONES.  ALEX SMITH IS OWED NOTHING!!!  HE WAS ON A 1 YEAR CONTRACT, FOR A REASON!!!  ITS UP AND THE GREATEST FREE AGENT EVER JUST HIT THE MARKET.  MANNING AND WAYNE ABSOLUTELY COMPLETE THE 49ERS!!  STACK THE O-LINE IN THE DRAFT AND WWWWWWIIIIIIINNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!

NOW FROM A BUSINESS POINT OF VIEW.  THE NEW STADIUM OPENS IN WHAT, 2 YEARS, 3 YEARS?  HOWS ABOUT OPENING IT UP WITH A RING AND BETTER YET, PEYTON MANNING STILL STARTING BARRING ANY HEALTH SETBACKS.

IM DISGUSTED RIGHT NOW.......
