Report: Manning 'put out feelers' to Cardinals

Posted on: March 8, 2012 12:46 pm

Earlier on Thursday, I whipped up a little opus relating to the teams who have likely (maybe? definitely?) contacted Peyton Manning about his interest in their respective franchises.

One of those interested teams was the Arizona Cardinals. It appears, based on a report from Adam Schein of FOXSports.com, that the feeling is mutual.

That's because, according to Schein, Manning "put out feelers" to the Cardinals about their level of interest.

Schein also writes that Manning is "very intrigued" about the possibility of playing with star wideout Larry Fitzgerald and that Manning "also likes Arizona's young, talented defense."

Additionally, Manning likes the idea of "bringing along [Reggie] Wayne as his wingman," which is something we've heard rumored before.

This all makes sense: these are the reasons I laid out when I listed the Cardinals as the No. 1, most-likely destination for Manning this offseason.

However, Arizona does have one problem: a tiny window with which to talk to Manning. Kevin Kolb is due a roster bonus of $7 million on March 17. That's 10 days from when Manning became a free agent and it's not as if the entire league has their quarterback situation sewn up.

Manning is a wanted man and he probably wants to see what various teams have to offer. Of course, those various teams also want to see what Manning has to offer. At some point in the next week or so, he has to throw for teams that are interested. (I mean, right?)

If that throwing session doesn't happen until free agency actually begins on March 13, the Cardinals will be in a tightly-squeezed situation that could be difficult to resolve.

Report: Manning 'put out feelers' to Cardinals

Whoever pays up for Peyton is making a huge mistake.

Don't get me wrong, he is probably one of the best quarterbacks ever. But that was then.

This is now,

I wonder why Peyton doesn't want to throw?

Maybe he can't???

Look, I respect Peyton. But he has way too much risk to take a huge gamble, and he contrals every aspect of a team. I'm not sure if that is what everyone in the franchise wants, especially from a 36-year old.

Everything is based on his previous reputation.

THIS IS NOW.

Great point.....if Edge and Manning weren't apples and oranges.

Edge was old, at a position where strictly athleticism and youth are king.  How many backs play at 35?  Have you ever seen a 35 yr old running back play great football, 35yr old RB ever make the Pro Bowl?

Manning is old, at a position where knowledge and intelligence can lead to success, and athleticism and youth are not requirements.  Many QBs over 35 have played GREAT football, see Kurt Warner.

This attempt at a comparison is lame.  Turn off your inner monologue.

Doesn't anyone in Arizona remember what happened the last time we imported a star from the Colts? I still curse the name of Edgerrin James. Tell Manning thanks, but no thanks.

Just wondering, any team out there that would take Manning, Wayne and Saturday?  I am sure Manning would love to have Saturday along for the ride.

Kolb is still owed $8 million by the Cardinals. If they release him, they'll have an $8 million salary cap hit from the prorated bonus. Not sure how the balance of the owed money would be handled, but I believe it is added on. So, wouldn't releasing Kolb create a bigger cap hit than keeping him?

Manning's fine.

Put two and two together and you'll get four.  Hear me out.

1)  They asked Manning, the ulitimate perfectionist, and he says he's making progress and feels good.
2)  Polian said, back in December, that Manning was doing much better.
3)  They asked Archie "how does Peyton look throwing the ball?" and Archie said:  "He looks like Peyton." Now, either that's a completely and totally sarcistic statement and would show a great sense of humor, it seems to mean that Peyton is really close.
4)  They asked Jeff Saturday, Manning's center and close friend, and he said "Peyton will be playing in 2012."
5)  Irsay didn't cut Manning because of JUST the money. He cut Manning because Luck is there and the next few years will be rebuilding for the whole team. Why remove any chance of Manning winning some Super Bowls, while paying him $28 million roster bonus, when you can have Luck grow with his team while rebuilding at a lower price, AND, amicably part with Manning by giving him a chance to play for a team where he can add a couple Super Bowls to his resume and assumably, in four years, grab every major career QB record.

Don't doubt Manning's health.

Now, a little more questionable is where Manning ends up.  Right now, I'd say Dolphins or Cardinals.  But, if the Ravens or 49ers came calling, i'd have to think they are in the best shape to get him a couple Super Bowls.

Agreed, the team that wins will have to take Manning for his word that he will be healthy enough to play. It is unfathomable that he would outright lie about his health, but that does not preclude the chance that he feels he will be healthy but won't be when the time comes. The team that signs him will have to take that chance. Hopefully they sell enough jerseys...

If you think Manning is throwing before being signed your crazy. He should but he doesn't need to. If a team says "Well your great and all but we want to see you throw..." another team will say here is a blank check you beautiful man come to our city right now. He has no reason to have any kind of workout and he won't.
