Kay Yow Wall Mural defaced

Posted on: February 2, 2009 12:45 pm

On the campus of NC State, there is a free expression tunnel, where you can paint pretty much whatever you like. Someone painted a mural to honor the late Kay Yow, a tribute. It was defaced sometime Saturday with light blue paint and the statement "cancer rules". I figured this would probably happen, and it has, the student body president for State was interviewed on the Noon news, and said that he suspected it was someone from Carolina, being that it was light blue paint and that Carolina played State in Raleigh on Saturday. That claim goes well beyond the rivalry, anyone who would deface such a tribute to the late Coach is a senseless piece of crap. The basketball community all over the nation is mourning her passing, not just members of the NC State community. Not only was Carolina's Coach Sylvia Hatchell very good friends with Coach Yow, she's also a survivor of Breast Cancer herself.

It troubles me that someone would deface her mural, it troubles me that this accusation has been made. You would think that there is more class in this rivalry between these two teams, and the fans. And whomever stooped so low to do such a thing, you are just not right.

Kay Yow Wall Mural defaced

Dook, thanks for the report on this.  I was saddened when I heard Coach Yow lost her battle with cancer after she stood with grace and class time after time through its recurrence.  I was disgusted when I heard about the mural being defaced.

Coach Yow will always be a model of the best we can be to anyone who knows of her and is a basketball fan.

I can't believe that a rivalry would even spur this kind of disrespect.  True fans who know the game and rivalries follow the stories of the coaches and players.  To be this disgusting, I hope it wouldn't be a fan.  But I'm sure we all remember how Chris Paul was treated after his grandfather was killed, and the treatment of Kevin Love and other college players when they play away games; unfortunately, it carries over to adults--the treatment of Derek Fisher and Carlos Boozer who have changed teams to be closer to their children who have life-threatening illnesses.

Fans who can't see past the game to the life lessons that sports gives to us are missing the point.  Coach Yow will always be remembered as the wonderful person she was, and people who are shallow enough to disrespect her or any coach or player dealing with difficulties are just pathetic people.  "Never give up!"

Thanks for repping Kay Yow, dookisevil. Reminds us that respect for life and the goodness of people far supercedes petty rivalries. I had not yet heard about the defacement. Utterly disgusting to think people can stoop this low. Has to be one of few people in this world, who haven't seen and felt the devastation cancer brings to its victims and their families and friends. I don't want to believe UNC fans would stoop this low, but even more so, I refuse to believe that a State fan would stoop to this level in an attempt to "frame" UNC fans. She is truly beloved by all of NC State, like Jimmy V is, and no State fan cares enough about making UNC look bad, to dare disrespect Kay Yow. Honestly, I have so much trouble comprehending this kind of disrespect for life, that I refuse to even acknowledge this as an act based in college rivalry. It's a truly hateful thing, that gives free expression, no, gives humanity a bad name. I can only imagine this is the act of some sick, twisted soul, that wanted to make news at the expense of NC State and UNC, and more so, at the expense of Kay Yow.

Ssmith, she was and still is highly regarded by everyone. The community is still mourning the loss of a true leader and fighter. I must agree that it's beyond the rivalry, that it's someone trying to make news at the expense of the rivalry and Coach Yow. One can only hope that this sick and twisted soul will receive help.

I truly hope that someone from the Carolina family is not responsible for this. It is just utterly disrespectful. The person who did this, very well could have planned this to look as if it were someone from UNC, using light blue paint and doing so on a day that the Tar Heels were visiting Raleigh. It's not a far fetched thought.

As I said earlier, it troubles me that the automatic assumption is that it is associated with someone from the UNC side. But it troubles me even moreso, that someone would do this to the mural in her honor, on the campus she loved, spent 30 + years coaching, does this person not have a conscience or morals to guide them?

Thoughtlessness of the highest order. Another example of how ridiculously far some idiots will take an athletic rivalry, if such is the case. People such as those don't deserve to have the joy and pleasure of being sports fans. Track 'em down, paint 'em light blue, and have 'em publicly flogged. Even THAT is too good for someone who would do this.

That is truly a horrible thing.  It makes me sick to think that anyone would be so disrespectful.  This type of thing goes way beyond sports.
