The Daily Shoutout: NFL terrified of Hurd list

OPENING HIT: It's funny how things work in today's media environment. One station in Chicago reports an alleged list kept by accused drug dealing kingpin Sam Hurd and within 24 hours panic sets in across the NFL.

No, that's not an exaggeration. There is absolute panic across the sport about the potential repercussions of such a list and, again, the list may not even exist. Just the idea of a list is causing people throughout the NFL -- from the league office to the union to players to coaches -- to pee their pants.

And, again, there may not even be a list.

I spoke to players via phone, text and Twitter DM; current players and former players and the resounding sentiment was: "Oh s---!"

I don't think there is a list. It's too convenient and sounds like something from a movie. But after numerous conversations with players last night they are convinced such a list exists.

It can't be overstated the damage such a list could do to the NFL. If it is 10 to 20 players that's not an insignificant amount. If it was later determined that players on that list never failed drug tests it would also put the league's drug testing program in question.

So, yes, such a list would be very, very bad.

No wonder so many in the league are panicking.

The Daily Shoutout: NFL terrified of Hurd list

If Johnny Jolly has to rot in a cell for 4 years for dabbling in Purple Drank, what chance does Sam Hurd have of avoiding major jailtime? Sam Hurd is a loser who played on loser teams and will go down as a loser in life. No big loss.

Slow down there folks.  To throw a big what if out there implies nobody is safe in the NFL.  Until there are actual players who are found guilty of something, chill out.  Folks want to guess as to what is going on and in the mean time finger pointing is not fair to others who have not done anything.  There is plenty of football to talk about and this is the topic?

Sam Hurd probably took advice from Nate Newton and Travis Henry on how to be a drug king pin. Personally, I think he should have watch American Gangster and learned from what Frank Lucas was cut out the middle man, lol.  If there is a list of players who bought drugs from Hurd this will no doubt be a black eye for the league. I just wonder why the Chicago Bears haven't cut him yet.

The amounts I heard on the news are staggering. 1000Lbs of weed and 10 lbs coke. That is a lot. Hopefully not too many customers are in the Nfl. I hope that if you are going to punish people for playing football (hits) ypu would really come down on people selling dope. This is really why they have the commish. playing 18 games, worrying about violent poeple. We all watch the game to see big fast people commit mayhem.

I think u are wrong "Floydfan" if #1 there is a list, and #2 if the list has names and quantity of purchase. With the amount of coke and weed Hurd is said to have been acquiring on a weekly basis, he wasn't getting rid of that sh*t on the corner in nics and dimes! He was most likely moving large amounts to other ppl (possibly other players) so they can distribute...which would/could turn out to be a MAJOR problem!!

There is no panic or list. As soon as a real reporter starts talking about this with some real evidence, it is nothing more than Freeman drivel.

From the comments tied to the arrest, Sam Hurd does not sound like an experienced kingpin. His comments about Mexican cellphones is getting a big laugh on Chicago sports talk. What is not getting a big laugh is "the list" which he very well may have had to keep track of his orders. This is almost like a bunch of the guys on the team gave him a lunch order and he's got to keep straight which player wanted to hold the pickle and who wanted to hold the lettuce. But the stakes are much higher with these overpaid high testosterone playmaking gladiator types - the list may be very real, and if these guys are peeing their pants as Freeman speculates, the NFL may want to confiscate those pants and test that pee under their drug testing program. Right now, Hurd's teammates are sweating bullets.

One thing to keep in mind.  The feds rarely, if ever go after the users. They "use" the users to move up the ladder to get to the kingpin. In other words, they do their investigations/undercover work to get to the top.  With that said, even if a list does exist (and I agree with you, there most likely is not), the public would never know about it because the feds "got their man", so to speak.  Investigation over as far as they are concerned.  Now, if Sammy wants to reveal some of his "clients", that is a whole different story.
