Super Bowl Shoutout: Manipulative Manning

OPENING HIT-- I've always said that Peyton Manning is the most cutthroat player in the NFL. Many times that's a good thing. You want that aspect on the field. You want a quarterback to go for the kill. Manning does that, but off the field he's the same way. The jovial Manning you see in commercials isn't really that guy. He's thrown teammates under the bus publicly, and now in an attempt to win the PR battle with fans is overshadowing his little brother during Super Bowl week.

These leaks about Manning being cleared to play are carefully plotted, well designed and unquestionably coming from Manning's camp. They're manipulative and designed as a preemptive PR strike to head off Jim Irsay likely saying sometime soon they have to release Manning because of his health. This is a Brett Favre-like ploy to put pressure on Irsay and the Colts. No question about it.

Peyton Favre.

Which is why Irsay reacted so strongly on Twitter to the Manning news early this morning. Irsay knows what Manning is doing and Irsay isn't going to let him get away with it. Good for Irsay. It's one thing for Manning to use the media to push his agenda; it's another for Irsay to sit back and let Manning do it without a fight.

I respect Irsay for this. He's putting his name to his side of the fight, which is more than Manning and his agent are doing.

I've been saying for some time the probable departure of Manning from the Colts is going to get ugly and it's starting now. Both sides want to blame the other for Manning's likely exit from Indy when there is actually no one to blame. It's just the circumstances. It's football. And it's Manning being Manning.

Jim Irsay should pay Peyton Manning the 28 million dollars, then Irsay should drop down and kiss Manning's butt flap while giving him a reach-around.

I'm sick of hearing about the Mannings.  How about from now on the only comments come from their daddy since he pulls all their strings anyway.  Hopefully they will be gone soon and any sons they may have will take up ballet so we can rid the NFL of their awful name.

...and for Freeman to characterize this as a "Brett Favre-Like" ploy is clearly someone one who has not watched Favre in action over the past several years.  Favre has clearly demonstrated to quote a Clash song -- "should I stay or should I go" mentality...Manning has NOT!  The only area I can really ding Manning on is his timing during the Super bowl event but that said, he does have little time to waste before the Colts management make the decision public with little recourse for Manning.

Time for Peyton to move on with another team....this one has soured.

Freeman I've always respected your writing. But I will boycott your articles altogether if you ever refer to Manning as Peyton Favre again. For those two to be mentioned in the same breath, should only happen when comparing career statistics. Manning has a LONG way to go before his ride into the sunset becomes as pathetic as Brett Favre's, this coming from a lifelong Packers fan.

Personally, even if Peyton is fighting back, and the stories are being leaked as a strategy from his camp, it's awfully hard to blame him. He was awarded a contract in line with today's greatest QB's as recently as last year, and suddenly he's being told by the only franchises he's known that he doesn't cut it anywhere. Without Peyton Manning, the Colts franchise simply wouldn't be where it is today. Economic or not, the Colts have disrespected Peyton Manning with the way this has been handled. He knows he won't be back in Indy, and he wants to make damn sure his legacy isn't tainted because of this injury. If he's going to leave Indy, it has to be under circumstances that show they no longer wanted him, that way he leaves on his terms, whether it's into retirement, or to another franchise.

Who wouldn't be manipulative for 28 million..he might have resurrected the Colts, but he was damned well paid for it..Manning didn't do 3 combat tours in the Middle East,he played football. He isn't owed a damned thing. Amazing, when it's about money,it's a business..losing or winning, then it's a sport.Money mouth. He will go to the Hall of Fame and can be a talking head on ESPN..next QB in line please!!

Mr. Freeman, I know you've been told not to respond, but how do you respond to writing without any proof or anything to back your claims??

I've never really liked Manning, but cutthroat? Really? How exactly is Irsay a saint? He is about to CUT the guy that resurrected the Colts and you say Manning is cutthroat for saying he is healthy?  If you are going to use the word cutthroat, use it in reference to the guy that will be CUTTING someone, Irsay.

What a dumba$$, Freeman.  Manning isn't printing stupid articles every 12 seconds.  No, that would be the dumba$$es at CBS who have no real information but pretend they have "inside knowledge."  CBS alternates its articles with calls for someone in sports to be fired with its embarrassing attempts to pretend they have the slightest clue as to what Manning will do.  Try writing an article on the cut-throat player who just happens to have enormous charity options including the children's hospital named after him.
