Jackson move makes sense for Eagles

Keeping DeSean Jackson was smart for the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, the club should figure out a way to sign him to a long-term deal.

Granted, Jackson was inconsistent last year and had too many drops. But he came around and, after the season, apologized for allowing his contract to be a distraction. That's a start.

All I know is that he's the team's most explosive player, a playmaker who can stretch the field, make big plays and is a perfect fit in any offense run by Michael Vick. When Vick scrambles, he's looking downfield for open receivers, and the speedy Jackson is often a deep target.

Of course, it's inside the locker room where some critics worry about the guy. But people close to the Eagles believe that Jackson is not a character risk; that he can be the complete player -- the team player -- he was before 2011.

That's because they believe that what happened last year was the inevitable consequence of the Eagles passing out millions to unrestricted free agents from other clubs -- with players who had experience with the Eagles, like Jackson, wondering why they weren't getting a piece of the pie.

Well, now he is.

Even though the Eagles have made a one-year commitment to him, the Eagles can still trade the guy. But I wouldn't expect that to take place ... not unless Jackson expresses dissatisfaction with the franchise tag.

That happened in 2002 with then franchise-player Jeremiah Trotter, and the Eagles wound up releasing him.

It won't happen here. If anything, the Eagles would trade Jackson. But I don't see that happening, either. I mean when general manager Howie Roseman says, "We want DeSean to be an Eagle for the long haul" he sounds like someone who envisions Jackson sticking around for more than this season.

Then there's Jackson's statement Thursday night: "I am honored that the Philadelphia Eagles' organization perceives me as a franchise player. I look forward to getting a long-term deal done soon and being an Eagle for many years to come."

That sure sounds like someone who envisions sticking around more than one season, too.

Coach Andy Reid knows the value of Jackson to his offense, and a happy Jackson makes the Eagles a dangerous offense ... again. This was a good move -- for Jackson and the Eagles.

And the Yankees beat the Phillies in the WS
Your point?

theman: Thanks for your advice about rangerslose12.  And I just caught him spilling more nonsense on one of the Drew Breese threads.  But I actually have fun putting trolls like him in their place.

By the way, rangerslose, sorry that I got back a little sooner than I expected yesterday (see my last post).  But don't worry, I do plan to be gone for another couple of days shortly, though (a) I'm not saying just when, and (b) I just may be able to get to a computer while I'm gone, to (among other things) check up on you.

Philly fans are the most ignorant and thuggish sports fans in all of sports.

Oh, now you're into generalizations and ad hominem attacks, are you?  The typical last resort of someone with nothing legitimate to say.  Really, what are you doing here?
I don't need to repeat examples of bad conduct by other cities' fans or good conduct by ours.  And I assure you, I've been to more Phillies games than you have.  Since only someone with no brains is going to be persuaded by someone who jumbles all fans of a city together--whether it's your city or mine--whom are you hoping to convince, and of what--especially on a thread that's primarily of interest to Philadelphia fans?

If you don't like what I say well you can just ignore me.

Uh, shouldn't you be following your own advice, especially considering where you are and the subject matter of this article and which fans, primarily, are reading it?  Again, what is your point in obsession about past yearx' teams?  What do they have to do with this coming season?  To take the Yankees as an example, Mantle and Ruth and Ford can't help you any more.  Why do you keep invoking their teams?  They have no bearing on the coming season, so stop using them as a substitute for serious discussion about the latter.

The Giants are the SB champs and now are 4 times S.B champs so try any way you like that is a fact
Uh, you've said that about three times already, in one form or another, and i've pointed out its irrelevancy to the coming season every time--which, after all, is what the article and most of the posters' comments are about.  No point in my repeating myself.  Anyway, I have to leave imminently to go away for the weekend, so you can have the place to yourself--though I strongly suspect no one's reading you any more.  See you Monday or so.  In the meantime, enjoy Memory Lane.  It seems to be your favorite place.

LOL @ NY fans who have nothing better to do than try to proclaim how great of a person they are just because the team they cheer for has more championships. Great job dude!

2009.Remember?
Yes, we finished about 10 games ahead of the Mets that year.  Your point?

And if you're still trying to change the subject to the Yankees for some reason, I can't think why--except to prove that the other guy and I are right about you--you have  fixation on the past, since just as the 2011 Giants can't make the 2012 Giants champs, the 2009 Yanks can't make the 2012 Yanks champs--in fact, they've proved that twice already.  Again, what's your point?
