Report: Bears deal with Peppers is imminent

Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers signing with the Chicago Bears is imminent, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Friday, citing an unnamed source.

The paper also said the Bears will hold a news conference later Friday to announce the singing of Peppers, running back Chester Taylor and tight end Brandon Manumaleuna.

New England and Philadelphia have also made a push for Peppers, but Chicago is offering a higher annual salary, the Sun-Times said.

No Peppers deal, or talks

Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney denied an Internet report that the Carolina Panthers were working on a trade to send defensive end Julius Peppers to the New England Patriots for a second-round pick, 34th overall.

According to the Charlotte Observer, an NFL.com story indicated Carolina and New England were hoping to complete the trade sometime between next week's owners' meetings in Dana Point, Calif., and the draft in late April.

By the rules of the (collective bargaining agreement), we cannot and have not had any conversations with other teams about Julius, Hurney said in a statement.

The CBA allows Peppers to talk to other teams, who could sign him to an offer sheet. The Panthers would have the right to match the offer sheet, or reject it and receive two first-round picks in return.

Pro Bowl DE Peppers wants out of Carolina

One week after getting upset by the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Divisional Playoffs, Julius Peppers said he doesn't want to play for them anymore, according to the Gaston Gazette.

His agent Carl Carey stated that Peppers is ready to move on and play for another team and informed general manager Marty Hurney of the news in a two-hour meeting.

Peppers is the team's all-time sack leader with 70.5 in seven seasons. He finished with a career-high 14.5 sacks in 2008 was voted to his fourth Pro Bowl.

Carey said ideally Peppers wants to play in a 3-4 defensive system where he can stand up and roam the field as a hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker, similar to how the Dallas Cowboys use DeMarcus Ware and how the San Diego Chargers have used Shawne Merriman in the past before his injury.
