Wade's job safe, but Jerry is 'very disappointed'

Posted by Will Brinson

Despite the fact that the Cowboys are 1-4 for the first time since 2001, Jerry Jones says there will not be a coaching change this season.

Jones told reporters following Dallas' loss that Wade Phillips job was safe from termination.

"I would never consider [firing a coach] during the season," Jones said.

However, Jones did say he was "not [optimistic]" and that he was "very disappointed."

The combination of Jerry's feeling and Dallas' record means that Phillips is about as lame-duck as you get six weeks into the season -- it's hard to imagine that Jones wouldn't make some sort of change barring a totally unexpected run to the Super Bowl.

Pat Williams calls Brooking "a little baby"

K. Brooking said last year he thought Minnesota was classless. This year, he gets another shot at trying to beat that team (Getty). Posted by Josh Katzowitz

I’ve never looked at a picture of Cowboys LB Keith Brooking and thought to myself, “Well, that just looks like a little baby to me.” Apparently, Vikings DE Pat Williams doesn’t share that opinion.

When Dallas and Minnesota meet this week for the first time since the Vikings smashed the Cowboys in last year’s playoff matchup, the Cowboys will have some bulletin-board material.

Last year, following the 34-3 loss, Brooking said the fact Minnesota scored a TD with 1:55 to play to increase the lead to 31 points was a classless move. He also said the Cowboys would remember that beatdown when the two teams faced each other in the regular season.

Color Williams unimpressed.

"We don't care what Brooking says," Williams was quoted as saying in the Dallas Morning News via the Minneapolis Star Tribune . "If he's still talking about last year that's his bad because last year is last year and we ain't worried about. If he wants to cry like a little baby, he'll cry like a little baby but we aren't worried about what he's saying."

Williams had more to say.

“This is the NFL, it ain't Pop Warner, it ain't high school," Williams said. "This is the pros. I figure if they were so good they would have stopped us from scoring but they didn't."

Brooking hasn’t commented this season about the game, but somebody asked Dallas coach Wade Phillips about the incident from last season.

"People can do what they want," Phillips said. "That's what they chose to do. It's not something I would've done."

Jerry Jones says Wade Phillips won't be fired

Posted by Will Brinson

Yesterday, we mentioned that one of the most disappointing things about the week in football was a lack of Jerry Jones flipping out on Wade Phillips.

Well, today Jerry Jones came out and gave Wade Phillips the dreaded "public vote of confidence" which means we might not be that far off from some fireworks.

"I can just give you a very affirmative 'no,' " Jones told KRLD-FM in Dallas on Friday when asked if Phillips might be fired.

"I do believe in Wade and the staff and the players," said Jones. "The thing about it is when you have that kind of commitment, one of the No. 1 things you have it for is those situations. Those people are supposed to really be there in hard times. Hard times. That's when you've got to make your best grade if you're deserving of that commitment and we're in hard times."

Jerry also said he was "in the saddle" with Wade and his team, and, really, as much as we'd love to think that the fiery owner would can Phillips after three games and a poor start, there's not much logic in doing so, primarily because he wouldn't have an immediate replacement available.

Maybe there's someone like Bill Cowher out there (Andy and I mentioned this on our podcast this week ) but why would a guy like Cowher risk his reputation by stepping in to take over an 0-3 team? Answer: he wouldn't.

Additionally, Jerry's never fired someone midseason before, and barring the Cowboys going winless through October, you can all but bet that he won't start this year.

Week 3 Podcast Preview

Posted by Will Brinson

It's Friday, people, and there's no reason to think you should be sitting at your desk and actually working. Instead, you should be pretending to do work and actually listening to podcasts in preparation for NFL football this weekend.

Fortunately, Andy and I are here to help you out by providing a full-on preview of every single game. Except for Oakland-Arizona. That's the "game that shall not be named" because of it's total lack of awesomeness.

Anyway, we debate whether or not the Falcons can beat the Saints, we wonder why I'm stupid enough to keep picking the Panthers especially when Jimmy Clausen is starting, whether an 0-3 start can get Wade Phillips canned, and talk some Michael Vick.

Plus, we make some sort of stupid bet about Packers-Bears that should be more dangerous for one of us. Anyway, check it out below and don't forget to subscribe via iTunes .

For the gambler in you

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

Last week, I brought you some of my favorite weekly picks from the brains of whoever makes the prop bets for bodog.com (this is a pretty cool job, but man, that would be a really cool job).

This week, I’ve got a new batch. Maybe I should start a weekly feature called, “For the gambler in you.” How much you wanna bet that I’ll do that?

Will a team from Texas win Super Bowl XLV?

Yes 4/1

No 1/6

At 4/1, I might be inclined to put my money on that, though I don’t think it’ll happen. Wait, the San Antonio Spurs are eligible to play, right?

How many games will Kevin Kolb start from Week 4 onward in the 2010 NFL Regular Season?

Over/Under 2

Too many possible factors to go with the under here. Vick could get injured, he could get benched, Andy Reid could change his mind again before Sunday.

Completion % - Jimmy Clausen (CAR)

Over/Under 54%

There are quite a few backup-QB-turned-starter-this-week prop bets, but this is a pretty good one. Until Clausen proves me wrong, I’d take the under. His first year playing at Notre Dame, it should be noted, he recorded a 56.3 completion percentage.

How many sacks will Clay Matthews record in the 2010 NFL regular season?

Over/Under 20

This is a tough one. I don’t think he’ll break the NFL record of 22.5, but I’d have a hard time putting him at the under as well. So, if I had to spell it out in a mathematical equation, maybe I’d say: 22.5>Matthews>20.

Which of these NFL coaches will be fired first during the 2010 NFL regular season?

Eric Mangini 3/2

John Fox 2/1

Wade Phillips 3/1

Brad Childress 5/1

I was asked this week if I thought Phillips would be fired mid-season, and I said I doubted it because I think the Cowboys will (somewhat) turn themselves around. But if they don’t – if they start 2-6 or something like that – I wouldn’t be terribly shocked for Jerry Jones to give Phillips the mid-season pink slip. So, I’d go with him.
