NFL agent Gary Wichard dies

Posted by Will Brinson

Long-time NFL agent and founder of Pro Tect Management Gary Wichard died on Friday morning at the age of 60 of complications resulting from diabetes and pancreatic cancer.

The news of Wichard's passing was first reported by Darren Heitner of SportsAgentBlog.com and additional notes of sadness were passed along by Liz Mullen of the Sports Business Journal, Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports and client Jimmy Clausen.

Wichard represented some big-name NFL clients over the years -- including Terrell Suggs, Chris Cooley, Clausen, Dwight Freeney and Jason Taylor, to name a few -- but came under a great deal of scrutiny with his involvement in the agent scandal involving the UNC-Chapel Hill football team.

Wichard, at the time of his death, was serving a nine-month suspension from the NFLPA and was being investigated by the North Carolina Secretary of State.

Despite all that, many people who worked with Wichard during his lengthy career -- be it other agents or sportswriters -- noted what a professional he was.
