Saints defensive roster moves

Posted by Andy Benoit

The New Orleans Saints made two fairly significant moves to their defensive personnel Wednesday. Both moves involved injured players who made a name for themselves on a previous team. First, the Saints released linebacker Clint Ingram. The ex-Jaguar was signed during the offseason to potentially replace Scott Fujita. Ingram flashed tremendous closing quickness and ferocity early in his career, and he was a good fit for Gregg Williams’ scheme. However, he couldn’t stay healthy and never contributed in New Orleans.

The second move was placing former Patriots cornerback Randall Gay on Injured Reserve. Gay had been out with a concussion. The decision to shelve him for the season was likely influenced by the impressive progress first-round rookie Patrick Robinson has made. Robinson was stellar filling in for No. 2 corner Tracy Porter against the Bucs last week. Coaches have every reason to be excited about what his quickness can bring to the slot moving forward.
