Report: Rashard Mendenhall may have torn ACL

Pittsburgh Steelers' running back, Isaac Redman, carried the ball 19 times for 92 yards and a touchdown in a 13-9 victory over the Cleveland Browns. Join CBS Sports' Kevin Harlan and Solomon Wilcots for a recap of all the action.

Posted by Ryan Wilson

The biggest injury issue for the Pittsburgh Steelers as they headed into their Week 17 matchup with the Browns centered around the health of their franchise quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger. Big Ben suffered a high-ankle sprain three weeks ago during the first meeting between Pittsburgh and Cleveland. He limped his way through a Week 15 loss in San Francisco but sat out last week's victory over the Rams.

With playoff seedings on the line, Pittsburgh started Roethlisberger, who played the entire game without setbacks. The same can't be said for running back Rashard Mendenhall, who left in the first quarter with a knee injury. During the post-game press conference, head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters that Mendenhall may have a torn ACL and likely wouldn't be available when the Steelers travel to Denver to face the Broncos in the wild-card round next weekend. According to ProFootballTalk.com, the team will perform an MRI Monday.

That means Pittsburgh will lean heavily on Isaac Redman, who came down with a sudden case of the fumbles in Cleveland (he lost two fourth-quarter fumbles that kept the Browns in the game) and rookie undrafted free agent John Clay. Veteran Mewelde Moore could also be an option if he has recovered from a knee injury suffered in San Francisco.

Tomlin isn't one to make excuses, instead choosing to say things like "the standard is the standard." Which means that whoever lines up behind Roethlisberger will be expected to do their job, whether that's running the ball, catching passes out of the backfield, or blocking on third down.

Jets captain Holmes benched in fourth quarter

S. Holmes was benched in the fourth quarter (US Presswire).

By Josh Katzowitz

During a season in which the captaincy of Jets receiver Santonio Holmes has repeatedly been questioned -- and for good reason -- the last game of New York’s season ended early for Holmes. During the Jets 19-17 loss, Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer benched Holmes in the fourth quarter, according to the Newark Star Ledger

“I looked out there, and I was wondering why he wasn’t out there myself," coach Rex Ryan said. "I didn’t bench Santonio. You’ll have to ask him."

Holmes said it was the “coach’s call,” and according to his teammates, he argued with teammates in the huddle and pouted on the sidelines during the game. He also didn’t catch a single pass in the Jets loss (he was targeted just once).

After signing a five-year, $45 million free agent contract before the season, Holmes has been an embarrassment as a team captain. Although Ryan has defended him in the past, Holmes has been hit with celebration penalties, has complained publicly about the offensive line and has participated in a supposed mutiny against Schottenheimer.

Asked after the game if he wanted to return to New York next year, Holmes said simply, “Thank you guys” and ended his news conference.

"Let me just say that there were guys in the huddle that were unhappy with Tone’s demeanor," running back LaDainian Tomlinson told reporters. “And when you have a group of guys who are fighting their butts off, and one guy who -- for whatever reason, his demeanor isn’t with ‘em -- you’ll have guys try to say something to him, just pretty much tell him how they feel. That’s what you got today.

"I’ll tell you what, it’s tough for guys to follow a captain that kind of behaves in that manner. When you’re a captain, guys are looking at you, you’ve got to lead by example. You’ve got to play your tail off until the last play. And when that don’t happen, you have guys looking at you in a way that captains shouldn’t be looked at. You should always put yourself out there as a leader. "

And apparently, today wasn’t the first time Holmes' effort has been questioned.

“He quit," one player told the paper. "It's happened for the past two to three weeks. It's happened all season."

Matt Flynn has record-breaking day for Packers

M. Flynn threw for six touchdowns Sunday (US Presswire).

By Josh Katzowitz

Perhaps knowing that he’d make Aaron Rodgers inactive for the day, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he wanted to see backup Matt Flynn perform even better than he did last season against the Patriots. He also said he wanted Flynn to win the game.

Flynn did him better than that. By completing 31 of 44 passes, Flynn threw for a franchise-record 480 yards and a franchise-best six touchdowns to lead Green Bay to the 45-41 victory against the Lions in what was a wild game.

Considering Flynn is a free agent after this season, it seems clear that he might have created a nice little free agent market for himself.

And if Rodgers, for some reason, gets knocked out of a game or can’t play during the playoffs, Flynn has proven that he can win a game against a quality team as well.
