Eric Steinbach's disc will end his season

SteinbachPosted by Josh Katzowitz

Turns out the back injury that Cleveland worried could keep guard Eric Steinbach out for the season will do exactly that.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur, via Rapid Reporter Marty Gitlin, told reporters today that Steinbach’s disc injury has forced the team to put him on the season-ending injured reserve list.

Even though Steinbach underwent surgery Tuesday and Shurmur said it went well, he won’t be back until next season.

As Gitlin writes, it’s serious blow for a team that now has to replace him at the left guard spot. The Browns could try rookie Jason Pinkston in the role, or they might test out newly-signed Oneil Cousins instead. John Greco also could get a shot.

If none of those players work, Gitlin says, Cleveland will head back into the free agent market to find someone to line up on the inside of tackle Joe Thomas.

“He made the decision yesterday, late in the day, that he was going to have surgery,” Shurmur said, via the team’s official website. “We tried to do some treatments to see if it would rectify itself. It didn’t, so that was the next action.”

Another blow for Ravens? Jared Gaither carted off

The bad news continues to pile up in Baltimore. First, cornerback Domonique Foxworth went down with a torn ACL. This afternoon, stud right tackle Jared Gaither was carted off the field with a back injury. The Baltimore Sun writes:

Gaither had ice on his lower back after being injured in the afternoon practice, according to Sun reporter Edward Lee. The severity of the injury is unknown.

He had been rotating with Michael Oher at left and right tackle during the morning and afternoon practices.

Gaither had been absent for most of the offseason workouts because of a toe injury. Now, he could miss time because of a back injury.

If Gaither is unavailable, the Ravens would play Oher at left tackle (which has been the plan all along) and likely go with Oniel Cousins at right tackle. Coaches will say that they’re confident in Cousins and that the super-raw third-round pick of ’08 has made drastic improvements to his strength and technique. This is true, but the fact of the matter is, Cousins is also the guy who got dismantled by the Steelers in Week 16 last year (he gave up two sacks in the closing minutes and had been briefly benched earlier in the game). Cousins, a native of Jamaica who is still relatively new to the sport of football, has made great strides, but he still has a ways to go.

UPDATE: Good news: Mike Duffy of the Ravens team website says that Gaither was only suffering from cramps.
