Colts offensive assistant coach Tom Moore has retired for the second time in three years. According to the Associated Press, team owner Jim Irsay confirmed that the 72-year-old Moore will not return in 2011.
Moore joined the Colts in 1998 -- the same year Peyton Manning came on the scene. Though not much of a public figure, Moore’s role in Manning’s development made him a paramount member of the Colts organization. Moore developed one of the most efficient offensive systems in football and, some will say in private, taught Manning how to execute it.
Moore stepped down as Indy’s offensive coordinator in 2009 but stayed on as an assistant. It will be interesting to see if the football lifer truly stays away from the game this time. Moore will undoubtedly be approached by other teams looking for a temporary offensive coach, and some who know him believe he’ll never stop coaching.
