Vick: I had nothing to do with the incident

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick – the NFL’s man of the moment – has released a statement, as acquired by the Philadelphia Inquirer . The statement reads:

"On June 25, 2010 I attended a birthday party held in my honor at The Guadalajara’s Restaurant in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

"After I left the event, I learned that a man was shot outside the restaurant.

"I want to assure everyone that I had nothing to do with that incident. I left the restaurant prior to it occurring and did not witness what happened.

Following the incident, I reported it to the Philadelphia Eagles and to representatives of Commissioner Roger Goodell of the NFL. In addition, I cooperated with and answered any and all questions from Law Enforcement officials investigating this matter.  My statements, from the beginning, explained that I was not there at the time of the shooting and had no knowledge of the events surrounding it. I have been completely truthful and fully cooperative from the very beginning and will continue to cooperate with Law Enforcement and the NFL as this investigation continues."

More Vick developments (or rumors)

In a follow up to reports we blogged about yesterday that suggested Vick’s brother may have been involved in the birthday bash shooting, David Teel of the Daily Press writes that Marcus Vick was in the Guadalajara restaurant settling up a bill until 2:23 a.m.  The shooting occurred at 2:10 a.m.

Guadalajara restaurant spokesman Allen Fabijan offers a very detailed account of the timeline that has drawn so much scrutiny. You can read it here.

Also, the owner of Guadalajara went on Philly’s 97.5 The Fanatic and disputed claims that there had been a confrontation involving the victim (Quanis Phillips). Stay tuned.

Serious Trouble Could be Brewing for Vick

Last Friday, Michael Vick voluntarily met with Virginia police to discuss the shooting that took place at 2:10 a.m. outside the Virginia Beach nightclub where Vick was hosting his 30th birthday party. Vick’s people told authorities that Vick had left the party a good 30 minutes before shots were fired. Authorities in turn said Vick was not a suspect or even a person of interest in the investigation.

However, video surveillance has since revealed that Vick actually left the party at 2:07 a.m. What’s more, Vick had an altercation with the shooting victim (Quanis Phillips, a co-defendant in the dogfighting trial). Now, the Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that police could be taking a different look at the Eagles backup quarterback.

"Right now, we don't really have a title for (Vick)," police spokesman Adam Bernstein. When asked about the Friday meeting with Vick, Bernstein replied, “We didn’t know anything. Since then, we have viewed the video. And more people have come forward, giving information.”

This is a story that isn’t going away. Stay tuned.

Vick's brother may have been invovled in shooting

Game 102.1 FM in Virginia Beach is reporting that Marcus Vick was involved in the shooting at Michael Vick’s birthday party last week. There has been some controversy about the timeline Vick has given regarding his presence at the party. If Vick’s troubled younger brother is indeed involved, expect the NFL to take an even closer look at the situation.

Another turn in the Vick case

The news continues to be not-so-good for Eagles QB Michael Vick. Remember how Vick apparently had left the restaurant where his birthday party was held long before one of his former dog-fighting associates was shot last week?

Well, it might not have happened exactly like that.

According to the Hampton Roads Daily Press , Vick’s entourage left the Guadalajara restaurant at 2:07 a.m., three minutes before gunshots rang out. This, according to the surveillance video the restaurant turned over to police Tuesday.

Vick attorney, Larry Woodward, did not sound pleased with the apparent confliction of the video and what he had claimed earlier.

"I stand by what I said, that Michael was long gone before the shooting, does not know who did the shooting and had nothing to do with the shooting," Woodward told the newspaper. "Anyone who says any different better be very careful."

Report from Vick's visit with police

In an effort to show the NFL and rest of the world that he has nothing to hide, Michael Vick volunteered to speak with police about the shooting that occurred following his birthday party in downtown Virginia Beach last week. According to the Virginia Pilot, in his discussion with police, Vick reiterated that he was not present for the shooting and does not know who the shooter is. The police told Vick he is not a person of interest in the investigation.

There are still plenty of concerns about what this episode means for Vick’s NFL career. It’s unlikely that he’ll face any disciplinary action – all indications are that Vick did nothing wrong – but the party itself gives Goodell reason to question the rehabilitating quarterback’s judgment.

Kathy Adams and Tim McGlone of the Virginia Pilot offer this:

Vick’s childhood friend and onetime dogfighting co-conspirator Quanis Phillips was thrown out of the party before the shooting and ended up in the hospital with a bullet wound, Woodward said.

Authorities have yet to confirm whether Phillips was the victim of the shooting. But he checked into Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital on Friday morning and was discharged around 3 p.m., according to Sentara spokesman Dale Gauding.

(Vick’s lawyer) said Phillips was not invited to the event, held at the restaurant and nightclub Guadalajara in honor of Vick’s 30th birthday. But the party was open to the public for a $30 ticket, party promoter JaPharrii Jones said.

Vick and Phillips remain on federal probation for their felony dogfighting convictions. Their probation mandates that they not associate with convicted felons, but it is not clear why Phillips may have been thrown out of the party.

Guadalajara spokesman Allen Fabijan said the venue is providing security footage to law enforcement, who requested the tapes to determine whether Vick was violating any of the terms of his probation during Thursday night’s party. That determination would be up to investigators in the U.S. federal probation office, said Officer Adam Bernstein, a police spokesman.

Fabijan said there were about 20 security guards on hand during the event, including those for at least four professional football players and Olympic gold medalist LaShawn Merritt. There were no altercations inside the party, and Guadalajara is not under investigation, he said.

Goodell pondering QBs

It looks like Eagles QB Michael Vick is clear of any legal problems regarding the shooting that occurred during his birthday party last week. Commissioner Roger Goodell is another story.

According to Foxsports.com’s Alex Marvez , Goodell said he’s still gathering facts about the Vick shooting, and although the Virginia Beach police department has told the NFL that Vick is not a focus of the investigation, Goodell said, “Obviously, we’ve got to look and see whether there was any violation of policy.”

Goodell also said he’ll meet in the next couple weeks with Tennessee QB Vince Young, who was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault after he allegedly was involved in a fight at a strip club. According to Marvez, Goodell acknowledged that, for a first-time offender like Young, he’s unlikely to receive an NFL suspension.

The latest with Vick

Quite a bit of Michael Vick news floating out there today. Now, here are a couple more links to narrow the focus of who was with Vick for his birthday party at a Virginia Beach restaurant.

  • The Hampton Roads Daily Press wrote that Redskins DB DeAngelo Hall said, though he was advertised beforehand to be in attendance, he actually wasn’t there. Falcons WR Roddy White was with Vick – Vick actually picked him up from the airport – but White said they had already left the party before the shooting.

"We were already gone by the time that stuff started happening, so I don't know what's going to go on with that or whatever, but we didn't have anything to do with it," White told the paper.

  • The Philadelphia Inquire r takes a look at how the NFL and the Eagles might respond to this incident. Vick knew his team and his league weren’t going to have much tolerance if he ever got in trouble again. And for now, he doesn’t appear to be in legal trouble. But that doesn’t always translate into an acquittal from the league.

As Jeff McLane writes, “Vick has managed to avoid anything that could be labeled as erroneous since (Roger) Goodell's warning. However, his judgment in regards to the location of his party, the number of invitees – up to 300 people, according to various reports – and his allegedly coming in contact with (Quanis) Phillips could come into question. Vick isn't supposed to associate with anyone from dog fighting circles, according to his probation.”

  • More on Hall from Jason Reid of the Washington Post . Reid interviewed Hall on the phone, and Hall said he was on vacation and that he didn’t give permission for anyone to use his likeness to promote the party.
