Pick-6 Podcast: Week 10 Film Room

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

We've made the turn, the first half of the season is officially in the books, and as the weather worsens, the games become more important. Lucky for us, we have Andy Benoit to break down the biggest matchups of the week, starting with Steelers-Bengals.

We also discuss whether the Patriots dynasty is officially dead (or did that happen a few years ago?), if the Raiders can keep the Chargers down, how much of a chance the Giants stand out west against the 49ers, and which rookie wide receiver is better: AJ Green or Julio Jones.

Pick-6 Podcast: NFL Week 9 review

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

Week 9's action is just about wrapped up and after an exciting Sunday's worth of action we fired up the podcast machine to break down everything that happened.

Is Joe Flacco making the leap? Is Eli Manning elite? Are the Patriots finished? Is Philip Rivers a choker? Why are teams allowed to sidestep concussions in game? Which SEC rookie had the bigger week -- Patrick Peterson or Julio Jones? Did the Browns lose their draft-day trade with the Falcons?

What the hell is Mike Shanahan thinking, in general? Are the Chiefs worthy of being tied for their division lead? Is Tim Tebow improving?

All those questions -- plus much, much more -- in this week's podcast review.

Just hit the play button below to listen (and did we mention that you should subscribe to the podcast via iTunes?). If you can't listen to the podcast below, download it here. And if you'd like to keep working while listening in your browser, pop that puppy out in a new tab here.

Pick-6 Podcast: Previewing Week 9 in the NFL

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

We've passed the halfway point of the 2011 season and unless you're the San Francisco 49ers, there's much to be decided. The biggest showdown of the week doesn't take place until Sunday night in a rematch of the Week 1 Ravens-Steelers get-together. Back in September, Baltimore took Pittsburgh behind the woodshed, beat them, then threw them through it. Now, the Ravens are struggling with their offensive identity and the Steelers have injury issues on defense. So what happens this time? We talk about it on the podcast.

Then there's the Super Bowl rematch between the Giants and Patriots. The team's haven't met since that fateful February night in Arizona back in 2008. New York somehow managed to slow down the 18-0 Patriots and New England hasn't been the same since. The Pats are coming off a loss to the Steelers last week, and the Giants squeaked by a dead-in-the-water Dolphins club that has yet to win a game. We talk about this matchup, too.

We hit a bunch of other stuff, too, including:
  • whether the Flying Tebows have a chance of upsetting the Raiders
  • how the Chargers are underdogs at home -- by a touchdown (!),
  • how much it would cost to trade for Andrew Luck in the draft,
  • whether Mike Shanahan should be fired, and
  • how the Colts should handle things if they end up getting the top pick.
As always, Paul Bessire of PredictionMachine.com joins the show to break down the best gambling and fantasy options for Week 9.

Pick-Six Podcast: NFL Week 9 Film Room

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

Week 9 of the NFL season is upon us and that means it's time to break down some film with Eye on Football Analyst Andy Benoit.

(You can read Andy's breakdown of Pittsburgh-Baltimore right here, as well as his breakdown of Tampa Bay-New Orleans right here.)

Andy and Will discuss whether or not the Steelers can be as effective defensively without their top linebackers, who's better between Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed, what the Giants can learn from the Steelers' win last week as they prepare for the Patriots, whether or not we should sell the Saints and buy the Buccaneers, if we're worried about Philip Rivers and the Chargers, and if the Chiefs are playing a trap game this week.

All that, plus much, much more below.

Just hit the play button below to listen (and did we mention that you should subscribe to the podcast via iTunes?). If you can't listen to the podcast below, download it here. And if you'd like to keep working while listening in your browser, pop that puppy out in a new tab here.

Pick-6 Podcast: Cam or Luck -- Who ya got?

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

Week 8 is officially in the books and we talk about exactly what happened to the Chargers on Monday night in Kansas City. Philip Rivers is forever called a top-5 quarterback, but he certainly hasn't played like it this season.

So, naturally, we debate where Rivers ranks among NFL QBs, and that led us to another discussion: if you had to start a NFL team tomorrow and had just two choices -- Cam Newton or Andrew Luck -- who ya got?

Ask most people and they immediately say Cam. But Brinson posed the question on Twitter and there were a surprising number of votes for Luck. We put the question to ProFootballTalk.com's Michael David Smith during our weekly chat and though he's a big Luck fan, he didn't hesitate to take Newton.

(MDS also discussed the Lions' win over the Broncos, Suh's visit with Goodell, the inevitable Tebow fallout, the Pats loss, and if the Redskins are the worst team in the NFC East.)

Inspired by the Cam-Luck scenario, we took it a step further: If you're starting a team tomorrow and you can have any quarterback currently in the NFL (for the long haul), who are you taking?

Brinson, the biggest Panthers homer you'll ever meet, is smitten with Newton to the point that he'd take Cam after only Aaron Rodgers. Wilson had Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees, Michael Vick and then Newton. Whether second or fifth, it's a testament to just how well Newton's played the first two months of the season.

At this point, biggest question is whether Cam can sustain that level of play for the rest of the season. Alrighty, talking starts below...

Pick-6 Podcast: Around the NFL, Week 8 previews

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

In this week's Game of the Year, the Patriots head to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers. As you've no doubt heard by now, Tom Brady is 6-1 against the Steelers, his only loss coming during the 2004 regular season (three months later, he'd return to Heinz Field to beat Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship Game).

But Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is playing some of his best football of the season, and the defense is coming together despite key injuries among the front seven (James Harrison and Aaron Smith are out, Casey Hampton and James Farrior are banged up). So will this be the game that Pittsburgh finally gets the best of Brady and the Pats? Compounding matters: Bill Belichick is 12-3 coming off the bye week.

Other Week 8 topics: Are the Eagles still in "must win" territory? Are the Lions begging for an upset? Can Indy finally win? Is Miami really a sleeper team this week? And are you ready for some Tebowing?

And Paul Bessire of PredictionMachine.com drops by for his weekly visit to break down the best gambling options for this week.

Pick-6 Podcast: Previewing Pats-Steelers

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

Eye on Football analyst Andy Benoit joins the podcast to preview a big Week 8 matchup: Patriots-Steelers. Tom Brady has had his way with Pittsburgh's defense in recent years, and is one of the few NFL quarterbacks who seem unfazed by Dick LeBeau, zone blitzes, or Troy Polamalu's hair. But is this the game the Steelers can finally get to Brady and beat the Pats? (Answer: you have to listen to find out.)

The discussion then turns to the Colts and whether they should fire head coach Jim Caldwell (and if Jim Tressel would be a good replacement). Other topics: what's going on with Titans running back Chris Johnson, why the Chargers are struggling, if the Chiefs are for real, and who has the edge in the Eagles-Cowboys game.

Podcast: Questioning Polian, Ripping the Ravens

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

The Jaguars-Ravens Monday night game was so awesome that we decided to bust out the old podcast machine and get to talking about whether or not the Ravens are contenders and if Jack Del Rio can save his job.

Then Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk joins the show to discuss whether or not Bill Polian should be on the hot seat in Indy and where the Lions stand after their second-straight loss.

Finally, we break down Terrell Owens tryout and wonder whether Stephen Ross is trying to "pull a Major League" with the Dolphins.
