Week 4 NFL Podcast Review

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

National Choker's Day is over, and it's time to break down a hefty slate of Week 4 NFL action. Joining us as always for the "the Detroit Lions are still somehow undefeated" talk is Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

Before MDS hops on, though, we break down whether or not Madonna is a good choice for the Super Bowl halftime show, wonder if the Steelers offensive line can keep Ben Roethlisberger healthy through the season, debate whether Tony Romo's a choker or not, question if the Eagles can make the playoffs and Matt Hasselbeck's rejuvenation.

We also break down which teams with winning records are contenders and which are pretenders.

Pick-6 Podcast: Previewing the NFL, Week 4

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

It's the Friday preview podcast and we take a look at the biggest games on the Week 4 schedule, starting with Steelers-Texans.

Both teams are 2-1, with Pittsburgh squeaking by Indianapolis last Sunday night while Houston blew the win against New Orleans. If the previous three weeks are any indication, this game will come down to the Texans' strength -- their offense -- versus the Steelers' strength -- their defense. Breaking it down further: who ya got -- Andre Johnson or Troy Polamalu?(Intersestingly, Houston's defense is still mediocre, as is Pittsburgh's offense -- at least on paper.)

We also discuss Patriots-Raiders (no way New England loses two in a row, right? Right?!), Jets-Ravens (Rex Ryan Reunion Bowl), the obligatory Brinson Bowl (any game involving the Panthers, who travel to Chicago this weekend), as well as Lions-Cowboys.

Finally, PredictionMachine.com's Paul Bessire stops by to offer up some expert advice on -- you guessed it -- accurately predicting this week's winners.

Talking starts ... now.

Pick-Six Podcast: Week 4 NFL film room preview

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

it's Wednesday, which means it's time for our own Andy Benoit to take a look at some matchups in an in-depth perspective. This week's matchups are Ravens-Jets (you can read it here) and Lions-Cowboys (check it out here) and they're excellent, per usual.

Andy also joins Will on the podcast to talk about whether Les Miles could make it as an NFL coach and where he might end up, whether Tony Romo deserves all the praise he's getting, what the Cowboys will do to slow down MVP candidate Matthew Stafford, whether or not Torrey Smith is a legit receiving option for the Ravens, and how the Patriots might slow down Darren McFadden.

Plus, Michael David Smith of PFT joins Ryan to talk about the fact that the Lions are undefeated when he joins the podcast. (It's true!) And, of course, all the NFL action that we had this past weekend, plus a look at Week 4.

Hit the play button below to listen (and did we mention that you should subscribe to the podcast via iTunes?). If you can't listen to the podcast below, download it here. And if you'd like to keep working while listening in your browser, pop that puppy out in a new tab here.

Pick-6 Podcast: Stevie Johnson, Week 3 matchups

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

In this Friday preview podcast, we talk to Buffalo wide receiver Stevie Johnson, who helps set the stage for Sunday's Patriots-Bills game, a matchup between two undefeated AFC East teams. New England has won 15 consecutive meetings, though Buffalo's last win was a huge one: a 31-0 shellacking to open the season back in 2003, when Gregg Williams was the head coach and some guy named Drew Brees Bledsoe was the starting quarterback. The 2011 squad might be the best equipped to break the 15-game drought.

We also preview the other big weekend matchups, including Jets-Raiders, Texans-Saints, Ravens-Rams, the Gabbert-Newton Bowl, and the Sunday night showdown between the Steelers and Colts.

Finally, PredictionMachine.com's Paul Bessire stops by to offer up some expert advice on -- you guessed it -- accurately predicting this week's winners.

Talking starts promptly...

Podcast: Power ranks, Jets S Leonhard, MDS

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

Week 2's all wrapped up and it's time to move on to the pointing and the judging and the laughing (at the Chiefs). Pete Prisco's power rankings are out and so we break down who's in the right spot and who's in the wrong spot.

Jets safety Jim Leonhard, who's working with Farkas Eye Black to stop athletes from wearing stickers on their faces, joins us to talk about how good a quarterback Luke McCown is, whether the Jets can air it out, if he's concerned about too much passing in the game (as a defensive back), how the Jets gameplanned for Tony Romo plus much, much more.

Also, Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk swings by the show to break down Week 2 and debate whether the Colts or the Chiefs are the worst team in the NFL, plus a quick breakdown of the final episode of "Entourage."

NFL Week 2 podcast review

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

Week 2 is (almost) in the books and that means time to hop on the podcast machine. Bonus: today we give away free Papa John's pizza on the show! (No seriously. Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes and email us the answer to the trivia question here and we'll hook you up, while supplies last.)

We break down what happened in the Eagles-Falcons game (a ... metamorphisis if you will), whether the NFL needs to suspend Dunta Robinson, what happened to the Chargers, how the Ravens came out so flat against the Titans, who among the Bills, Redskins and Lions are contenders, whether Tony Romo is tough or not now, and just how awesome Cam Newton is.

All that and much, much more. For free. For you.

Pick-6 Podcast: Previewing the Week 2 matchups

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

It's only Week 2, but anytime the Chargers and Patriots get together it's a big game. Need more proof? New England quarterback Tom Brady jokingly told the Gillette Stadium crowd to "get lubed up" for the 4:15 p.m. start. He doesn't make such suggestions when the Bengals are coming to town.

(Worth pointing out: a Pats spokesman later clarified that Brady wasn't, in fact, encouraging people to get drunk on alcoholic beverages but to hydrate properly. Duly noted.)

Vegas likes New England by 7.5, which seems high until you remember that Brady is just back from South Florida where he threw for 517 yards against a pretty good Dolphins defense. The Chargers, meanwhile, struggled at home against a mediocre Vikings outfit, but when you have Philip Rivers throwing to Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates, an offensive explosion is always a few plays away.

This is all a longwinded way of saying: we don't know what to expect but it should make for compelling football.

We preview the 15 other Sunday games, too, including the meeting of unlikely 1-0 teams (Oakland vs. Buffalo and Arizona vs. Washington), as well as the Browns-Colts, where Cleveland is favored. (This is not a misprint just very, very sad.)

Finally, we welcome Paul Bessire from PredictionMachine.com to the show. Using nothing more than an abacus and a protractor*, he simulates each game 50,000 times and predicts the outcome. Let's just say he takes his job seriously.

Pick-Six Podcast: NFL Week 1 review

Posted by Will Brinson & Ryan Wilson

Week 1 of the NFL season is -- almost -- in the books and there was more than enough material to fill up the old podcast machine with talking on Sunday night.

We break down why Tony Romo is a choker, why Matthew Stafford is awesome, why the Steelers are so terrible, why the Colts are even more terrible and whether we should go ahead and engrave Cam Newton's plaque in Canton.

We also preview the Monday night games and debate what the biggest surprise of Week 1 was.
