2009 Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper Sucks Thread

Watching path to the draft, I got to tell you Charlie Casserly is getting annoying, those teeth shaking at you is more geared towards Halloween.....

Looks like EJ Manuel and Xavier Rhodes, stock is rising, that is good for the Steelers. First off it pushes someone back and I really never saw them drafting a CB in round one anyhow. I really like Mayock, sure he  gets it wrong, but unlike Kiper he admits when he is wrong and he has an eye for talent, Kiper has a talent for taking bribes from sports agents and annoying listeners.

Reading Gil Brandt, great article on impact players, who he likes to help a team, Kenny Vaccaro was one of his "impact" players who will translate to probowlers.

I am also hoping that Barkley throws well at his pro day, I agree with the guys on NFL network he's a second rounder, but I am hoping a team does not see it that way. I am also agreeing with Mike Mayock, first of all I never liked Barkley, well documented on here, Manuel showed up at the Senior Bowl and won the MVP. He has size, athletic ability, and arm strength. Needs to work on accuracy, but that can be taught, he seems to be able to read his progressions.  Again I hope both these players are reached for to push someone back.

Anything is possible in the draft, I am hoping that either Star Lotulelei or Jarvis Jones is there at 17. There are so many teams with needs at OL and CB those guys are going to be snapped up like hotcakes. It would not shock me to see 3 CB and 5 OL taken before 17. And then I am hoping for at least 2 QB, possibly 3. Wink

Probably not gonna happen anymore for Star.  He was just cleared to work out for Utah's pro day.

Colbert, Tomlin, and Haley were all at the Tennessee pro day, as Da'Rick Rogers, Cordarelle Patterson, Justin Hunter, Mychal Rivera, and Tyler Bray were putting on a show, all of these receivers have really good size 6-2 and taller, which I believe Haley is looking for, for his offense.  I'm kind of looking at Justin Hunter here, he has the speed, he's more polished and I think he might have a little chip on his shoulder because he's getting over sharowed by patterson.

ERROR THIS CBS
I hear ya, I had a big dissertation yesterday, breaking down a variety of things and it got wiped out because CBS has Servers that Ronald Regan would say were outdated.  Surprised

If you watch path to the draft long enough, the numbers don't add up. Every analyst is doing a good job, but they miss the someone has to fall aspect. Okay so all these teams need a CB, OT, or a QB. But there only so many players in the top 20. If Desmond Trufant and Xavier Rhodes go very early, that pushes somone back but who?  My guess is it's Warmack and Cooper, they have a lower value. I also think teams picking in the top 5 are getting cold feet on Sharif Floyd after his non-participation in the Florida Pro day. I know it would sour me if I came to watch him work out. These teams are investing tens of millions of dollars and want to make smart decisions. A lot of the teams drafting top ten have huge issues, and the draft is one way to improve their team. Picking the wrong guy early will set your franchise back years both from a financial standpoint and a competitive factor. The Raiders are picking 3rd, why, because they took Rolando McClain who is now looking to be traded, JaMarcus Russell who rivals Ryan Leaf as the biggest draft bust ever, Robert Gallery, Michael Huff was released, etc.  Do you go all in with Sharif Floyd, I know I would take a kid who I thought would not only help my team but one who will be around for the second contract.

The one team who snapped out of this perpetual picking of busts was Cincinatti. You have to admire their drafting the past 4 years, like it or not they are putting a team together that will compete with the Steelers and the Ravens for years to come.  They are getting out of the  mode, and are now grabbing guys like Dalton, Green, and Zeitler. The one kid who had a checkered past last year was Vontaze Burfict, and he was a good value and really a steal as Undrafted. I am not sure if Marvin Lewis selects Tyrann Matthieu or not, but if they think MIke Zimmer can use him to win games and they buy into his I learned my lesson speaches, then I think they are in play. I strongly disagree with Deon Sanders, he is sold on the kid and predicts he won't make it to the third round. For my money I would rather take Jordan Poyer or Logan Ryan, a player with more arm length to defend the bigger targets. 5'8" ain't coverring Rob Gronkowski. Here is a good example of what I mean. The last two times the Steelers played the Patriots, it was lopsided. In the first game Gronkowski abused William Gay (5'10"), the Second Game LeBeau played press with 3 CB Ike Taylor (6'2")  Keenan Lewis (6'0") and Cortez Allen (6'1"). It was Allen who basically blanketed Gronkowski and held him to minimal catches and gains, no TD's.  William Gay gave up 3 TD's in the first game all to Gronkowski. Maybe the 40 yard dash is not the most important thing in the combine, but having long arms to bat away passes, or shove rushers away from the QB is where a team deciding on two guys on thier board, puts one ahead of the other. The other alarming thing to me about the Homey Bladder, he put up 4 reps at 225, Adrian Peterson is going to leave tire tracks across his back.......  no thanks.

Second paragraph says that Spence suffered extensive nerve damage and might not play again!!!

So we can definately write him off this year.

Jarvis Jones looks nowhere near as athletic as Ogletree, IMHO, the numbers are the numbers but when you look at some of the tape, Ogletree comes out of nowhere and just pummels people. I love his talent, just wish he wasn't so immature.

Not sure I would gamble on Bacarri Rambo either, I would rather take a solid kid like JJ Wilcox and not worry about him doing something stupid off the field.

I have changed my mind 10 times since January, right now I have some idea of who will be there at 17, but this draft has so many question marks and uncertanties, it's going to depend on a few things.

1. How high up Barkley and Manuel go.
2. Do teams really pull the trigger on Trufant and Rhodes before 17.
3. Who moves up to get one of the LT's, they are all gone by pick 11 I will predict that one without a crystal ball.
4. Then what is the risk/reward on all these guys:  Werner, Ansah, Ogletree, Jones, Lotulelei.
5. HOw patieint are teams going to be, do you pull the trigger on Tavon Austin and or Cordarelle Patterson to inject playmakers into your return game and offense and get immediate return from you first rounder.

So who's left, Cooper and Warmack. Who needs an interior OL anchor and are teams willing to be patient and teams that have done their homework will take the OG's. The more I think about it, I think bb was right, Cooper will make the better pro. He can also play OC and his versatility makes him even more valuable.

I just saw Johnathon Franklin on NFL AM, no way that kid with his smarts, abilty, and locker room presence will last very long, very imipressed with the young man. IN fact Walter Football has him mocked in round 2 now ahead of Eddie Lacy, interesting.  The mock works for several reasons, 2 LB, WR, RB, and versatile OL player in Quissenbery.  I still see them looking for safety help. Cyrprien won't last to 48, would you take Wilcox over Terrance Williams. Robert Woods went one pick before Williams, I just see solid pro written all over him.  Taking Williams also means passing on Sio Moore, Phillip Thomas, Montee Ball, and Quinton Patton and Da'Rick Rodgers. Not sure how the interviews went.

After TN pro day, Justin Hunter and D"Rick Rodgers stocks are ascending, cannot imagine if Rodgers hadn't screwed up, imagine those 2 with Patterson lining up 3 wide, that would be a matchup nightmare.

JMFO (as nyb would say) one of Barkley or Manuel will go before 17. I think team will fall into the he has potential trap with Manuel and way overreach and all it takes is one team to think Barkley will rebound from last year and think they are getting great value.

Ansah, gone by 17, too much potential.

Same with Ogletree, someone won't care.

Star's heart condition checked out okay so he'll go

Austin and Patterson both fit the Jets and Bills like gloves

Tennesee could add another guard or one of the corners

San Diego upgrades a putrid line with one of the guards or Lane Johnson

Miami will draft a corner since they have no one there imo

St. Louis could add a receiver after losing Amendola or Cooper to keep Brittle Bradford from becoming David Carr

Tampa looks like would be an ideal team to take a corner since they are thin there, assuming they do not get Revis.

New Orleans I can see taking Jones with that putrid front 7, let's hope they take Mingo the local kid.

This is almost word for word the same thing I've been saying NY, Jones has good straight line speed to the QB/ball carrier but doesn't have the wiggle that Ogeltree does.

Alec has a higher ceiling IMO.

Could be that Manuel or Barkley goes to Buffalo, or it could be that by the time Buffalo takes a selection they get Nassib (Jaguars, Cardinals, Raiders, Browns?).

Would work out nice for Pitt, the more of them that come off the board the more talent that falls in Tomlin/Colbert's lap.

I'm going on record with this, I think Matt Scott will be the best QB to come out of this class.

With John Franklin I think he should go ahead of Lacy. I like Bell, Franklin, Christine Michael and Stepfan Taylor to all be better pros than Eddie.

Have you looked at Cameron Marshall at all?

I think you can pencil Nassib to the Billsi. Never say pen someone in because the Jets could always be dickboxes and steal him away. Patterson/Austin for them in the 1st, Nassib in the 2nd.

The Jets should be more concerned about pass rushers than receivers. I've had them penciled as a prime candidate to take Ansah. If he's there, Lane Johnson should also be considered.

Hopefully they do pull a wacky pick like that, though. Any team who takes Austin in the top 15 deserves scornful laughing.
