There is something to be said for sticking with your team through the hard times. As much as some of us bust the stones of you Isles fans in here, the truth is you're being loyal to a struggling franchise and that's respectible.
However, you can't add a divisional rival to the mix. If you wanna supplement your hockey with something worth watching every year, how about a West team? Or even better and AHL or ECHL team.
But by choosing the Devils what you are doing is saying "I am putting my team on the backburner until when/if they ever get better because I'm either not that big of a fan or I just can't handle it".
It's early yet, racecar. You can still backout of this bad idea gracefully.
Maybe you could also watch the Blues or something like that. It's easier to swallow.
