If its a clean hit, I have a problem with dirty revenge. However, a nice hard CLEAN check in response next time they meet is fair play

If its a clean hit, I have a problem with dirty revenge

If it's a clean hit I have a problem with any revenge.  Even a player or teammate of a player dropping the gloves in response to a clean hit drives me nuts because it slows down the game and to me is a complete waste of time.   Forcing a player who made the hit to either turtle and embarrass himself or to fight and miss at least 5 minutes of the game in my opinion is ridiculous.  A player making a legal hit shouldn't be forced to fight anybody.  A player making a legal hit should never be forced to sit out 5 minutes or more and certainly shouldn't be forced to risk being hurt in a fight for a hit the NHL says is perfectly legal.   Finally one last thing.  Although I may have implied that instigating a fight after a dirty hit is better then after a clean hit doesn't mean I like that either. Referees are supposed to take care of dirty hits and if the ref misses the dirty hit you can bet the league won't.  Once again slowing down the game makes absolutely no sense to me at all.  It's not just the fight that follows, it's the 8 to 10 man scrum with all the pushing and shoving and waste of time that drives me crazy.   Asking 3 officials to separate and control 8 or 10 players bigger then they are is a little too much to ask.

I'm not disagreeing with you. If a person check someone hard but clean, they shouldn't have to find themselves defending their actions with their fists. However, they shouldn't be surprised if someone takes their number and stores it for equal retribution. Not dirty. Just tit for tat. Watch. Tit is gonna get censored.

When is the NHL going to start allowing referees to use instant replay for more then just whether or not a goal was scored?
I think that day is coming, I think replay will be used (beyond goals) in a limited way.

Last night a Sharks player legally hits a player on Chicago but gets a 5 minute major for a legal hit.  Instead of the Sharks going on a 4 minute PP after Keith loses his mind on him it's 4 on 4 with and then a Hawks PP.
Some of the issue here could be fixed by changing the way the rule is written.    We see far more of those calls missed than blown incorrectly imo.   I'm hesistant to do much in the way of changing that call until the officials have a couple more seasons getting used to how they will call it in the future.
If the refs could use instant replay before ejecting players the game would be better off
I agree, as long as many of the rules are changed so that the punishment of the penalty can be applied based on what is seen on a replay.  Some rules have automatic penalty minutes or misconducts, those would have to be revisited I think.

What I'd like to see is some suspensions for players who instigate a fight after a hit like Keith did yesterday and too many NHL players to count do on a consistent basis.  I'm sick of games being delayed after almost every hard hit in the league.  It wouldn't bug me nearly as much if the fights were only after bad hits, but they aren't.  The useless attacking and scrums and fights are after almost every big hit, even legal ones.  Getting really, REALLY SICK OF  THAT CRAP !!!!!
I would love fines after instigating penalties when it turned out that a legal play took place.     It's really annoying.   Some teams also create momentum from legal hits and they're forced to lose it because of the ridiculous stuff, either change the rules about hitting or implement harsher rules about instigation, this inbetween phase we're seeing....squish, just like grape.

Even worse then just losing the momentum is after a player who makes a legal hit gets his ass kicked in a fight ( especially on the road) momentum completely shifts in the other team's favor.   It's just stupid.

I don't think the NHL will ever change the rules on hitting, or at least they probably won't make any major changes.  The "keep your head down and die" mentality has always been there and will probably never disappear.  As long as a player has the puck or the puck is near that player and his head is down he could easily get crushed.  The only way I believe I could be wrong and the league changes its ways is if and only if superstars in the NHL start going down at a rapid pace.  If a lot of star players who people pay to see start getting seriously injured the league might take notice and actually do something about it.  But right now I don't see them doing a damn thing.

Which leads me to a question or two. Wouldn't it be better for the league if those hits disappear for good?  Does anybody on these boards want their favorite team to lose a superstar just because the guy's head was down?   People on these boards have said yes, they're willing to accept that as part of the game but I don't believe them.  I think they're saying that because it's not happening to their team at the present time.   Pittsburgh is not going to win a cup without Crosby.  Chicago will struggle to contend without Keith or Kane or Toews.  Detroit is nothing without Datsyuk or Zetterberg.  Vancouver isn't winning anything without the twins, even if they sometimes do choke or disappear in the playoffs.   Do any of us really want any of those players to be hurt on a "good hit"?  I'll answer for myself and say no way, I want no part of that at all.
