No way that a middle of the road pitcher, like Sanchez, should be making $15mil for the next six years.

While I understand the agent's strategy, I couldn't agree with you more on Sanchez's value.

well not a FA issue. But, geno will no longer be at 3B. he is being replaced by brookens at 3b, with belliard moving to 1b. geno will be relegated to the dugout.

I'm just loving this info.......I like me some Brookens......What's Geno in charge of now? Making sure there is Bubble gum and seeds available for the players? That might still be to complicated for him......I'd put him in charge of the hot dog vendors.....His physique tends to lead me to believe he could be successful at that.

I'm a staunch hater of Raburn (gone) Inge (gone) Geno (step in the right direction) then finally the kingpin himself Mr. Leyland........Jury is still out but not a fan of him one bit.

Wow. You would think someone could move on - past the Inge, Raburn, Lamont thing. But when you have limited knowledge of issues, I guess you stick with one thing.....forever.

I see Ramon Santiago's name was mentioned in rumors. He is getting paid $2mil for 2013, so I hope some body comes along and takes his contract and actually gives the Tigers something (anything) in return.

Still seeing Scott Hairston and the Tigers linked. Can't see that, since Hairston is looking for a two year deal. With Garcia needing a 'tune-up' at AAA, I could see wanting a right-handed bat for this season....but not for 2014. However, if Hairston's $ requests are low, he'd make a good addition. IMO, Tigers should try to fill the righty outfielder spot with a minor league signing.

Lamont and Leyland are still on the team......I'm not going to move on till they get the same departure Raburn and Inge got.......We have only gotten rid of two problems and demoted one, but the big problem is still in charge of the team.

It is a shame that some fans dwell on the negative - to the exclusion of everything else. The Hot Stove League is in full swing, and spring training is less than 3 months away - yet some "fans" are already starting on the "hating" thing. It's a sad thing that, today, the word fan includes those who spend all their time hating and bashing.

(Please note that I gave this gentleman a choice of things to comment on. He selected the one where he could show his hatred - and inability to communicate on anything past that.)

Seriously, is Brandon Inge a 2013 free agent or did he retire? The Yankees need a stopgap third baseman. And they love old, sucky, overpaid players.... Or maybe he finally realized he should have hung it up after ending the 2006 World Series. Either way, glad to see Shane Victorino get overpaid elsewhere.

Free agent - Inge is rehabing shoulder. Should be ready for spring training. If he is healthy, the Yankees might decide to use him in place of A-Rod - until the latter is healthy. Would be a good, temporary, fit.

If Detroit has the money to offer Sanchez 15 mil a year then why not try and bring in Kyle Lohse. He may demand a little more but he is a bonefide SP that would solidify their starting rotation as a WS contender with basically the team they have now. Add a closer then and let's play ball.

Who said the Tigers had the money to give Sanchez $15mil a year? They offered him $12mil for 4 years. Lohse is 34 and signing him will cost the Tigers a first round draft pick.

Without naming any names, what should a pitcher who could average 17 wins a year for the Tigers be paid?

cleaves - you are a waste of space. I can't spend time on someone who pats himself on the back for being a negative bi-tcher. You are just another hater masquerading as a fan.

HermanN.....is there a pitcher out there that is available and averaging 17 wins a year currently? If one can average 17 wins a season....I am sure he'd get over $20mil a year and a nice long contract.

I would probably go in the different direction... Difference between the two is that we saw Sanchez pitch in AL and he was good. Lohse's AL numbers, albeit they were early in his career, are far from stellar. Neither is his recent interleague ERA. He does not K and gives up a lot of groundballs, which spells a >1.3 WHIP with our "speedy and sure-handed" infield. Tigers need a strikeout pitcher. If they can't get Sanchez, I'd rather they get Edwin Jackson and plug him in as No.4 or 5.

The player who COULD get us 17 wins (Hidoki Kuroda) just got signed for 15. I'd say there's your measuring stick. Now that was a one-year deal. Here's what I would not mind paying for the remaing FAs.

Greinke - nothing. just don't like him. are not you glad i am not a GM?
Lohse - 3 years at 12 per year
Edwin Jackson - 1 year and 10-11 mils.
McCarthy - 4 years 13 per year (would rather stay away, as he is a big gamble, and can't stay healthy, but he is 28 and is a beast)
Sanchez - 4 years 14-15 per year
Dempster - 2 years 13 per year

Going after a SP that would win 17 games is like going after a #1 SP......how many pitchers won 17 games last year......#4 and #5 SP are not 17 game winners .....Tigers have 3 SP that could win 17 games now......Porcello has won 10 or more game the last few seasons....I would take him over everyone you mentioned except Greinke......and he would cost about 25 million/per

burf....I did not understand the "average 17 wins a season" remark either. I assumed he meant someone who had previosly done that - or at least come close. As for the guys mentioned above, none of them have come close to that. Perhaps the '17' remark was meant to mean that he "could" win 17 games a year? Well - ask any of the agents that represent a SP in Nashville this week, and I am sure they will tell you THEIR client will avarage 17 wins over the next few years.

While I would not mind seeing one of the above starters in the Tiger's rotation....it would mean that they would replace Porcello or Smyly. One of those two would move to the pen. Would I spend the money to get them? Well....I am not sure that any (except maybe Greinke) will assure a return to the World Series. BUT, I do not want to start the season with Smyly and Porcello at numbers 4 and 5 in the rotation...and nothing behind them. That's why I would like to see a Joe Blanton or a Joe Saunders added. Neither is going to break the bank and would provide security in case of injury. Of course neither one of them will probably be interested in signing with Detroit if their role could end up being "spot starter/long relief".

I feel vindicated. Haha, DD must read these boards. I prefer him to read them because he just blows up my phone during the day. Now that he's down here in Nashville he wants to take me to dinner and discuss possible FAs......I told him "if I could find some time on saturaday I would squeeze him in between 2pm and 3pm" He was estatic to get a hour of my time.

I'll keep you guys posted on what we discuss and the possible trade of Boesch for Ian Kinsler and Hamilton strait up......He's playing hard ball with text right now but I'll convince him this saturaday The Rangers will bite if we dangle Brennan in front of them.

errrr....Hamilton is a free agent. Perhaps you meant Boesch for Fred Kinsler and Melvin Hamilton, who work on the Rangers' grounds crew???? (No, the Rangers wouldn't part with two guys who can really "rake", for Boesch)
