mlbtraderumors....

D'Backs and Detroit discussing Porcello again. Centers around one of the two SS prospects AZ picked up this winter (Nick Ahmed and Didi Gregorius).

Porcello is not a star, but he rates more than a SS prospect in return. AZ is loaded with SS, so adding Peralta may not work....unless they arrange a 6 or 7 man deal.

That trade is a high risk / high reward trade for Atlanta.  Who knows if having two Upton's in the clubhouse will be bad or good for team chemistry.  They both have never been considered great teammates.  Also, that lineup that the Braves have put together could set records for team strikeouts by their hitters.  There are a LOT of 100+ K guys in that lineup.

Listening to sports talk radio on my way home from work last night, someone had the gall to suggest that the Tigers shoud try Porcello as a closer.  To me, I just don't see it.  I don't see Porcello as a very good RP, let alone closer.  That could make us wish for the days of Todd Jones again.

Looking at the minor league numbers for Ahmed and Gregorius does not make me feel like either one is a good trade of Porcello.  I don't think their minor league numbers translate to major league success at all.  And this is from someone who has been in front of the "trade Porcello" bandwagon.

D'Backs are saying that they no longer are seeking starting pitching. Porcello probably won't be a D'Back. However.....AZ has 3 very good SS prospects in Ahmed, Gregorious, and Chris Owing. I would not mind having the Tigers get one somehow - since they really don't have any strength at that spot in their system. Just not willing to give up Porcello for one.

That person knows even less about baseball that I do.
Closer needs to be able to strike people out, something that has never been Porcello's game. Speaking of Rollercoaster, Todd Jones was 38 when his SO/9 numbers dropped to Porcello's level.

I don't necessarily think that a pitcher needs to be a stikeout guy to be a closer. Throwing strikes is a lot more important than striking people out. In fact, a pitcher like Porcello that induces a lot of ground balls often do well coming out of the bullpen. No, the reason Porcello would suck coming out of bullpen has more to do with his mental attitude than with his style of pitching. He just lacks the "killer instinct" to finish off games.

The trade makes alot of sense if Detroit gets a setup guy like David Hernandez too.

The D-Backs SS prospects are still a year or two away and this type of trade may have a greater impact 2-3 years down the road. Plus it's getting late in the game to trade Perralta. Detroit's defense would stay the same for a year at least and the closer situation would get another canidate.

Looking more and more like Porcello stays in Detroit. AZ says it is no longer interested and the O's signed Jair Jurrjens.

Maybe or the D-Backs are trying to slow play DD.

Either way Porcello will hold value and increase value closer to the trade deadline.

I would rather have a decent fielding SS with speed and range to start the season though.

Procello has more value to the Tigers than a minor league SS.....I believe you can never have enough starting pitching......wether Porcello is #4, #5 or #6 he has won over 10 games a year......The Tigers offence should be improved this season and they have improved their D with Infante and Hunter and Dirks to start the season......

I know that the SS's mentioned are still 2 or 3 years away.  But all you can do is project the possibility of success in the bigs based on what they have accomplished, and the numbers that these guys have put up so far are loaded with warning signs and do not project well to MLB success.

Now, if we were to get David Hernandez as part of the deal ... that may change everything.  That guy is a heck of a RP, and I'd love to see him in a Tigers uniform.

Read today Jhonny has lost 19 pounds and working out like Miggy did last spring.....not going to make him an all star SS but sounds like he is committed to this season......I think he will have a year like 2011......

Why would a pro MLB player pick and choose when to be in shape? Is it a contract season for Jhonny? Why wouldn't Peralta be working out all year long?

Some players have the drive to win and others have the drive to get paid....Not sure if any of this is the case with Jhonny but if you don't have the desire to win then cut bait.

Alright!!! Mr. Negativity is back. One of the few Tiger fans who will be going into the 2013 season with a totally negative attitude.

Sorry it will be such a boring season for you. With Inge and Raburn gone and Lamont off the basepaths - it leaves you with nothing else to moan about except Leyland. I guess everyone here will have to get use to the same "message" from you, every time you show up on this board. I suppose you could find another player to dislike (I am sure you will it at least jump on some bandwagon) and conveniently blame him for all the teams problems. S.O.P.

BTW....I loved how you butt-kissed broncosmitty concerning Don Kelly, last season. We all know he was just about as worthless as Inge and Raburn....but you didn't say a word about him! lol

I'm still smooching his butt.....Don Kelly rocks!!!!! I do have my guys already picked out this year to beat down like rented mules......Leyland being #1......Pretty sure I'm going to attack Johnny many times......I'll find my favorite RP to complain about during ST.......Lamont will get the brunt even being in the dugout standing next to JL....Can't have two stupid people standing next to each other in the dugout making deciscions......That just makes decsiscions X2  more stupid.

Run with it iffy, I gave you loads of ammo......Be back in a few weeks.

Muzz, what will you do with yourself if the Tigers take off from the get go, lead the division coast to coast, and take the WS a la 1984?

By the way, for the record and for future anthropologists who study sports message boards, who were your "suck" players in 1984?
