Designated Hitter Rule

December 6, 2012 4:19 pm

I'm writing an essay for one of my college classes and I'm doing it on the designated hitter rule. What's your opinion on the rule? Would you keep it as is? Add to the NL? Or get rid of it all together? Or something else?

It's a moot point. The MLBPA will never allow it to be abolished (reduces salaries) and the owners will never add it to the NL (increases salaries). The only way the owners add it to the NL would be in exchange for a salary cap. A salary cap restricts salaries so the players will never allow one. Thus, the DH rule stays as is forever more. There's your essay in a nutshell...........

I'm not asking if you think it ever will, I'm asking for your genral opinion. I know it will never leave. It's an arguementative paper on the designated hitter. I just want opinions on the rule.

I hate the DH rule but the reality is that if there is ever going to be a change regarding it, it will be added to the NL instead of being removed from the AL.

I think the DH is the most retarded thing in baseball outside of not being able to replay the basic definitive calls of a baseball game (fair/foul, out/safe).

There is nothing more retarded in MLB than watching a pitcher who never even takes batting practice flail away like a 4 year old kid trying to hit T-Ball.

The players would be very much against its abolition. The way the leagues were constituted, having it in the AL and not in the NL was acceptable. Now the forming of two 15 team leagues will require many more interleague games. So you should either abolish it or enlarge its usage. If you have a Big Papi on your team, I think you are for the rule. But some teams in the NL are at a disadvantage because they are built for double switches and defensive replacements more than carrying a real good hitter who can only pinch hit once a game. If you are a proponnent of walking the 8th place hitter and forcing the other manager to let the pitcher hit or remove him from the game, then you don't lome the rule. If you are in favor of not having to remove your pitcher and having another bat in the lineup, you like the DH. But from the players point of view, it is additional time for some players at the end of their careers, and a position that is often well compensated. Because of the DH AL teams usually carry more pitchers than their NL counterparts who need more position players for pinch hitting and defensive replacements.

Things that are stupid:

1) Designated Hitter

2) Seat Licenses

3) Anaheim Angels of "Los Angeles"

4) Padres trading Ernesto Frieri.

buckeyeboy..
lucky you have a michigan man to shed light on this subject.

i will try not to use to big of words  .as not to confuse you...

DH.  should be in both leagues..  as the novice kinik  pointed out. pitchers cant hit worth a lick.
It adds years to productive hitters careers. Which adds excitment to the game. Which can be boring to people who dont have the knowledge of the game as some of us do.   more scoring...more viewers...

Plus.  it gives the NL teams a chance to try to improve to the AL level.

Also.   Some pitching staffs work so hard at the art of pitching. Like the Detroit Tigers.  Hitting would only up set the mantra of the well oiled mojo.

The DH rule changes the game dramatically.  It takes away game strategy.  It was only initiated because people, who don't actually know the game, complained baseball was to boring.  They wanted more offense and thus the DH.  Weak minded managers don't have to strategize.  Over the hill players now longer since they play no defense, which takes opportunities away from younger and better ball players.  The DH rule will now be with us forever and that's a crying shame.

Sure there is:

1) Major League (AL) pitchers that can't learn to swing a bat to help their team. Hell, just knowing the nuances of throwing a ball should help them to be better at it. It's lazy baseball, plain and simple. Be a full time player, not a player in a part time position.

2) Watching some overweight, past his prime player get placed in a DH role because he's too old & slow to get the ball quick enough defensively. Why extend a career that's basically over? Give the job to some kid that can develop into a better player than the current DH slug is.

The entire DH concept is horrible.

Write how it is a joke. The DH is a defined position in baseball and having by far the greatest DH in history not even sniffing enough votes to reach the hall of fame makes the DH a joke.

If they can't get voted in it isn't because none of them deserves it. It is bone-headed writers who are responsible. I mean look how difficult it was to get in as a closer. Sutter has gotten in but I am not sure he is the most deserving. And finally Gossage. But Edgar Martinez belongs. And I thing the Big Hurt will get in. Paul Molitor is in so it isn't like the number is zero.

The AL will always have it and the NL will always have pitchers hit.  Personally it should be one or the other in both leagues period.  It does make sense how strategy comes into play more so without a DH than having one but still it takes away from the offense of the game and let's face it, us fans want offense and not an easy 3rd out.

Wether a DH gets in the HOF has nothing to do with the debate.  Every team has about 38 guys on their roster that will not make the HOF regardless what position they play.
