Isn't a top 5 pick supposed to be an impact player that needs to be accounted for on every play?  I just don't see that being the case with a LB in a 4-3 scheme.  Teo may be an excellent LB and leader, but I don't see him as being someone that has to be accounted for on every play.  Like a number of you, I see the DE position in a 4-3 scheme requiring an impact type player, besides I anticipate Avril and KVB will be gone.
Round 1 pick: DE Bjoern Werner.

And for all of you that have been clamoring for Raiola's head for the last few years, I can't imagine that you would even think of passing on the chance to draft his replacement.  I understand the need to focus on Defense in the draft, with all the glaring issues they have, but there is a can't miss stud that has played and excelled at all OLine positions: LT, OG, and C.  He is an All American at multiple OL positions for the top program in the nation.
Round 2 pick: C/G Barrett Jones

While our CB play as a group has been terrible over the past two seasons, I also attribute part of it to injury for the many CBs that have lined up at the position.  Houston has been the only constant, and we need to re-sign him.  CBs usually take three years of development, with rookies rarely making an impact.  There have been a few exceptions in the past couple of drafts, but I do not see a "stud", can't miss prospect in this draft at the position.  Most of the "so called experts" agree with this assessment.  IMO this draft is stocked better at the SS/FS position, and we are just as desparately needing to fill this position as we are CB.
Round 3 pick: S Bacarri Rambo

Are you guys aware that that idiot Mayhew will be in charge of the draft this year? He will make a good pick with the gimme at #5 ( ITS HIS FAULT THEY ARE DRAFTING AT #5). Then the idiot will take Denard in the second and Lattimore in the 3RD. The only thing to hope for is that the idiot . screws up enough to get that #1 pick for the new GM in the 2014 draft. My Lions motto for 2013 is FIRE THAT IDIOT MAYHEW AND SUCK FOR CLOWNEY. Seeing how the idiot Mayhew will be building next year's team the season is already a lost cause. The best we can hope for is an unmigunmitigated disaster of a season, a new GM, and Clients.

4-12 don't lie fellas. You have no hope till that idiot Mayhew is fired. Stop with all the I hope they take this guy and that guy garbage. He's taking WR's and RB's with these second and third round picks. Seriously all the hope is starting to look pathetic.

We can always take the Rich Rod road and go all offense have shoot outs 55-50 every game.....Let's do it.....The defense will suck regardless of what we do in the draft.....Let's just go strait offense....Give me a T, WR and RB in the first 3 picks.......

Give me Denard Robinson in the 4th.......Sounds about right for this regime

Round 1 Tackle
Round 2 Wr
Round 3 Rb
Round 4 Denard......

Offense should be set for a decade.......Then just take the next decade building the defense........Hahaha.......

Off-Season Draft Thread

January 5, 2013 9:40 pm

Just to give you something to ponder... A football team is made up of three phases... Offense, Defense and Special Teams. A team needs at least two of them to be good in order to be successful. How many times have you seen special teams rush a field goal attempt or punter last season? Or the Lions getting the short field while giving their opponents a long field? For all the fare catches and knees Stefan Logan took didn't help special teams either.

I'm one that would like to draft in the trenches, and since we have a Franchise QB I'm not against protection on the Oline. But, I'm not sold on drafting Olinemen for run blocking for RB's when all 98% of the season was running up the gut. Jeff Backus, Rob Sims, Dominic Raiola, and Stephen Peterman are all under contract for the Oline next season. Gosder Cherilus, Dylan Gandy and Jason Fox are FAs.

To get a DE through FA and they'll be paying through the nose. Kyle Vanden Bosch is under contract. Cliff Avril, Willie Young and Lawrence Jackson are FAs. I'm all for letting Avril walk and draft a DE in the first round. Would like to see Young and Jackson back but no sure about the price tags to keep 'em.

Instead of guessing where the holes are going to be with the Lions FA's me thinks I'll wait to see what the Organization is going to do.

Do you consider the 27th rated schedule "easy"?  B/c that's where ND's schedule finished up at this year, according to that pesky Sagarin rating.

And last year they had the 25th hardest schedule.  Should I continue?  Wink

Easy was your word.  I said it was a myth that it was hard.  Year in and year out we hear talking heads and ND slappies talking about they have the hardest schedule in the country then once the season starts and the teams on your schedule start to lose we get excuses.  the facts are your schedule is always a bunch of names and it's rarely actually hard.  I don't buy what you're selling and if people were really paying attention instead of just buying the talk they'd also realize ND doesn't have a hard schedule.  so as far as #27, I'll just say I'm not impressed.  I'm sure you knew that already though.

any team would love for their top tacklers to be their linemen.  that would pretty much mean no one is running on them and they are getting to the QB.  the fact is though that linebackers usually lead the team in tackling so I can't agree that they don't need to be accounted for on every play.  The top 17 tacklers in the NFL this season are LBs and of the top 40 tacklers only 4 are not LBs, they are safeties.  I believe that if you don't have good LBs then you likely don't have a good D.

Easy was your word. I said it was a myth that it was hard.
My apologies if my use of the word "easy" was misinterpreted.  Lord knows I need to spell it out for scUM fans.  I was basically saying that our schedule sure isn't easy.  Heck, it's not even middle of the road.  I'd say the top 1/4 percent of the nation is a pretty tough schedule.  I'm guessing you only consider top 5 hard.  Ugh.

Year in and year out we hear talking heads and ND slappies talking about they have the hardest schedule
"Hardest schedule" is your phrase.  No ND fans claim to have THE hardest schedule, just one of the toughest ones.  My evidence proves that.

Also, year in and year out we hear haters try to refute the notion that we don't have a tough schedule.  Annnd, at the end of most years, they are all proven wrong.  (See my link from previous post)

the facts are your schedule is always a bunch of names and it's rarely actually hard
No, that's your opinion.  Big difference.  27th hardest schedule in the nation disproves your "facts".

I don't buy what you're selling
Not selling anything.  The "facts" are right there in front of you.  It's your choice not to read them and understand.

so as far as #27, I'll just say I'm not impressed. I'm sure you knew that already though.
I know, your hatred for anything ND doesn't allow you to be "impressed" by facts.    Wink

I'm on record saying that the last 2 years the hype about your SOS is a little closer to warranted.  But in 2010 your SOS was 52.  2009 it was 56.  2008 it was 62.  To be fair 2007 it was 16.  So, no, the "facts" don't support the hype, at least not most of the time.  When you take into account that 50 or so of these teams are midmajors then 25 and 27 out of 60 or so "BCS" programs then it's not impressive in the least.  Anyway, it's my job to dispell the legend of the ND schedule.   I get paid well too!!

I know, your hatred for anything ND doesn't allow you to be "impressed" by facts.

And on that you very well could be correct.  Good luck to your boys tonight.  You're gonna need it!!    Tongue out

Looks like Te'o will not be on the list after last night either.  I am sticking with Werner and Simon.  We need some white guys on defense anyway.

Best players in college football.

BPA at 5 Geno Smith welcome to Detroit. Just kidding sorta!

I see the Lions dropping a few spot also and taking the DE available. I also think they drop down in the second round as well. I could see Detroit getting upwards of 10 picks out of the draft this year.

Detroit is going to let a fair number of guys walk and they will need depth so I am guessing the Lions are droppers not risers this year.

This would be smart.  This way after they roll Shwartz's clown azz out of here the end of next year, the new coach will have some players to work with.

I hope we use a 6th or 7th rounder on Quinn Sharp, Oaklahoma's punter/kicker. He's got a big-time leg (5 seconds of hangtime on his punts) and could handle kickoffs too in order to let Hanson focus soley on FGs...
