I remember 20 years ago, getting together in the basement with 10-12 guys and doing NHL playoff pools.  No add/drops or anything...but that's how it all started.  Evolving into football first (only TD's and FG's), until we decided to do a baseball season.  My first ever pick was Manny Ramirez, 6th overall in 1995.  The internet makes it a lot easier, and allows us to do this, but there's something to be said about the gathering.  Everyone with their magazines and pens and paper... we still try to get together during our drafts, but with people away it's hard, and with the internet it's even harder!

Treff,

Not sure what happened, but I sent that invite to you twice.  I cut and pasted your email straight from the football thread.  Maybe there was a typo, or maybe the messages went to a quarrantine folder.  Who knows.  In any event, it is good to have you aboard officially.

I remember 20 years ago, getting together in the basement with 5-6 guys and playing dungeon and dragons.
Everyone with their magazines and pens and paper...
Everyone with their character sheets, 20 sided dice and copy of the players handbook.  Yea my inner geek is coming out.
we still try to get together during our drafts, but with people away it's hard
We still get together every year at Lake George, but it's now a weekend drinkfest instead of game.  good times.

I'm not saying I am old, but I did have George Brett on my team once, and he was still good.

Items to address:

1)  Draft time:  Someone said they had a possible conflict with the currently scheduled draft time.  An early draft on March 17th was proposed as an alternative.  Obviously it is difficult to find a time that is ideal for all 12 owners, but please discuss all of these possibilities and list any that you absolutely cannot make work.  Please list preferences as well after discussing any times that don't work.

  A) draft on the afternoon of the 17th starting sometime between 1 and 5 EST.   (I have a potential conflict here, but if we are somewhat flexible give or take a couple hours, I can make this day work).

B) Keep the draft on the current day, March 16th, but move the time to a nighttime draft.

C) Keep the time as is

D) Draft on another weekend (If we choose this option, please list any weekends that do not work for you).

E) Draft on a weeknight (I am pretty flexible here as long as we schedule the time far enough in advance.  I would prefer a weekend time, but weeknights are OK.  Please list any weeknights that do not work for you.  Start time would have to be around 9 EST so that we can start early enough for the east coasters and late enough for the left coast guys).

2)  BA vs. OBP vs. OPS- choose one

A)  BA-  Batting Average- The traditional category is also the weakest stat as it does not account for walks or extra base hits

B) OBP- On Base Percentage-Accounts for walks, but not extra base hits

C) OPS- On Base Plus Slugging- This stat is our current setting and is a player's OBP + their Slugging percentage.  This stat not only encorporates walks, but also gives an edge to players who get a lot of extra base hits.

3)  Wins vs. QS- choose 1

A) Wins- This is the traditional stat.  The trouble is that wins are somewhat arbitrary.  A starter can pitch quite poorly, but still get a win if they are able to make it through 5 innings provided they get the necessary run support.  Meanwhile, your stud could pitch 9 perfect innings and not get you a win if their offense fails to score on the other side.

B) QS- A Quality Start is defined as any start in which a pitcher goes 6 or more innings while giving up 3 or fewer earned runs.  While this stat is far from perfect, it is a better indicator of your player's performance and is less subject to luck.  Also, relief pitchers cannot ever earn a QS, so if your closer blows a save, you aren;t going to luck into a win.

4)  Any other setting issues that require league votes?  List them here.

1)  I can make most times work with notice.   I have few conflicts in March aside from my Men's basketball league which plays on Sundays and my $ league draft which has not been finalized or even discussed yet.  Unfortunatley,  I do not know when my basketball games will be yet as the playoffs start mid March and the schedule has not yet been determined.

2)  I vote for OPS, choice C

3)  I vote for QS, choice B

1)  I am good with the draft as is Tlance.  That said, I can be flexible, with really my other 4 fantasy drafts to work around more than anything else.

2)  I say OPS is fine.  That said, I think it would then be nice for someone like yourself or Jim to help the ( i think ) new to fantasy baseball folks with this, so they don't end up with guys who hit an otherwise empty .300 average on their rosters all the time.

3)  I will go with whatever the majority decides on this one.  While I get why anyone would want to move away from the wins cat for pitching, and while a quality start is a better indicator of how good of a year a pitcher is having, there is still something missing here as far as I am concerned.  That being, that I kind of like the "vulture win" myself, and, due to these, you can end up with middle men who can help your fantasy team in more than the usual e.r.a and whip cats.  But, instead of that, maybe the QS is the way to go, as this would be a good way to balance so teams are not loaded with just middlemen and closers going for their team each week.

Just please make sure the word gets out to all as soon as you decide to change things, so everyone can get on board and up to speed a.s.a.p before draft day comes.

1.  I have 2 drafts scheduled for Sunday the 24th, one in the afternoon and my keeper league in the evening.  I'm good with any other date or time that is decided on.

2.  I vote C. OPS, but if it comes down to a tie between OPS and either of the other choices I can easily switch my vote as I am flexible.  Big D has a point about OPS, so as much as I like OPS maybe OBP or BA might be a better choice in light of the two rookies (unless they don't care).

3.  I vote for B. QS, but again I can go either way and am flexible depending on the rest of the leagues votes.  If you have not played with QS before I will tell you that almost everyone I talked to about this that have played with both prefer QS.

Additional Issues:
4.  We currently have 1 DL slot but I think a second DL slot would be a good addition in light of only a 5 man bench (or an additional bench spot would work as well).  It's not necessary, just a preference.

5.  One of the new features on yahoo this year is a Predetermined Random Draft Order so you can randomize your live draft order before the draft date (as opposed to waiting 30 minutes before the draft to find out when you pick).  If we can do this early so we can all formulate some kind of draft plan it would be appreciated.

4) I am all for a 2nd DL spot.  I see no adverse effects at all in adding one, nor can I imagine anyone minding that you did so.

5)  This one is a non0issue for me, so however this one falls is fine for me.  I am always on in the draft rooms as soon as they open, and, once I see my draft spot, I tend to map out my picks for the first 8-10 rounds then.

4)  I agree with Jim that a 2nd DL spot would be good.  There are a lot of 15-30 day injuries over the course of 162 games.

5)  I see no disadvantage to the predetermined random draft order.  I did not realize this was an option.  Does this option come up once we finalize the owner lists, or did I miss it in the initial set up?

Let's close the voting at midnight on the 24th.  This will give us plenty of time to vote on these minor settings and will also provide time to discuss draft time options if need be.  If we have not found a draft time that works by this Sunday, we will need to work quickly to lock that down.  We need to have the time and all settings finalized by March 1 to give everyone adequate time to prepare.
